Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Indian10As they entered the shady establishment, Aurora quietly told Beau to hide in the shadows. The big wolf did so, melting into the shadows as Eryn flew above giving a scream. Aurora looked up to see the she-hawk land near the wolf on a fire escape in the shadows of the alley.

Upon entering, Aurora sensed that something would go wrong but kept quiet. The red haired woman was still shooting daggers at her and Aurora could tell that now would not be the time to speak her opinion. So, she slid into the chair and smiled warmly at the dark skinned waitress. She was about to order a glass of cold water when Sionn spoke up ordering something called Guiness. Shortly after that all hell broke loose.

She wasn't used to seeing this amount of violence and what appeared to be blind hatred but her defensive nature came to the front. Unfortunately, she didn't even have time to think about joining in when Taeryn grabbed her and pulled her out of the bar and grill. He finally stopped at the corner when Beau came charging towards him and Eryn was diving for his face.

"NO....STAND DOWN!!!" She yelled quite forcefully at her two animal companions which they obeyed immediately albeit grudgingly. Beau walked up to stand in between Aurora and Taeryn while Eryn perched on a railing on a light post, watching closely. Beau growled softly at the man when his ears perked forward to the two siblings coming towards them. Aurora have a small sigh of relief then laid her hand on Beau's head.

"Well...that is surely one way to make our presence known to everyone around", she said somewhat jokingly. She looked over at Tori, "I've never seen anyone fight anywhere close to that. I am glad you and your brother are not hurt." She said everything meant to be taken as a compliment and hoped that the woman took it that way. Beau on the other hand, or paw, looked up at Tori and gave her a small snarl before turning his attention to Sionn.

"I don't know this city, so I have no idea where to go that would grant us the privacy we need", she said to the three. "I would appreciate it though, if we found a place where at least Beau were welcome if not him and Eryn and both. If at all possible. Unless you know of someplace better, we could go back to my motel room. It's not much but it would afford us privacy."

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans SionnBanner

Sionn and Torri approached and as Aurora spoke he smiled softly nodding in agreement, "Aye, we have certainly made more a ruckus than I would have liked. I have no idea who or what those lads are attached to but something tells me it won't be the last we see of them, if they are connected to a street gang of some type they will seek revenge."

He inhaled deeply and looked at his watch, "It is getting late, I don't think City Hall is gon' pan out today." He turned and listened to Aurora again and smiled his charismatic grin, "Aye lass, we know just the place," he turned and looked at Torri, "don't we sis?"

"Come, let's go find a ride." He walked half a block up to a main street and signaled a few times until a cab stopped for them, he turned to Aurora, "I'm no sure how you speak to them beasties but tell them to go to the French Quarter, Saint Peter's Guest House, that's where we are heading."

Aurora did whatever it was she was capable of doing and then climbed into the cab, Sionn took the front seat and looked at the driver with a smile, "French Quarter, Saint Peters Guest House please."

The driver pulled away and looked over at him, "You alright man?"

Sionn looked at him curiously, "Of course, why do you ask?"

"You got blood on your shirt, you guys didn't get jumped or anything did you? Not a great part of town to be in if your white bro, there's a lot of Goose Boy's around here, not really a gang per-say but they will rob you and such if they get the chance."

Sionn glanced back at his sister who returned the glance knowingly. Sionn turned back to the driver, "Well lad, we might have seen a couple of them, what are they about?"

The driver shrugged, "Not much, there's no real organized stuff in New Orleans, mostly petty criminals and a couple "kingpins" if you will, but nothing that is really truly organized like L.A. or New York."

Sionn looked at Torri again and then back to the driver, "You seem to know a lot about all this."

The driver laughed, "Well, when you've grown up here it all starts to just seep in."

Sionn smiled and nodded, "I suppose that would be true."

The short trip brought them into the French Quarter and the driver stopped outside the Saint Peter's Guest House, "Here you go. I would suggest staying in the French Quarter, you tourists shouldn't be wandering around outside the safe areas, patrols and such are always good here because of the amount of money you folks bring in, they don't want that messed with."

Sionn nodded as he looked over at the man, "I appreciate your telling us tourists about the unsafe areas, do you have a card in case we need a ride again?"

The man laughed, "Nah buddy, we just get dispatched"

Sionn smiled again, "Aye, but say we wanted a real tour, like from a lad who was born and raised here who could really show us the places the locales gather and tell us about the lore of this place, is there a way I could interest you in that?"

The man looked at him curiously with a grin cocked on his face, "Well I don't know, I mean, we aren't supposed to hire out like that, there's rules to being a cab driver ya know."

Sionn nodded, "Aye, but you aren't driving this can all the time."

The man looked at him again and laughed, "I suppose not but I don't think..."

Sionn extended his hand and spoke, "Sionn McGhee, and I am completely willing to compensate you for your time, I would suspect there are no rules against moonlighting on your own time?"

The man looked down at the three one hundred dollar bills in Sionn's hand and his eyes went wide, "You're really serious man!"

Sionn nodded softly as he smiled, "More serious then I can let on lad, so what do you say, can you drive us around a little on your next day off? I would be willing to pay you $500 more."

"Sure buddy, I get off tonight at one and would be able to swing by in the morning."

Sionn glanced at his sister and then back to the man, "Aye, that would be fine, let's say ten o'clock."

"Ten it is, and by the way, my name is Charles."

"Aye Charles, it was great ta meet ya, we will see you at ten."

Charles drove off and Sionn looked up at Torri with a smile. She grinned and shook her head as he approached, "Awww come on now, you realize as well as I do that a private driver will make things much easier."

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans TorriBanner

”Aye….that I do. And here I thought your charms were solely for the opposite sex. Then again, could be the wad of bills you offered making him sweet on ye.”

As Aurora and her animal friends approached, Torri’s smile faded slightly and she spoke quietly to Sionn.

”I’ll warn Sam about the new guests.”

As Taeryn came around to join her he had a troubled look on his face and Torri knew why.

”Ya know, Tae, the internet is a wonderful thing. I’m sure we can dig up what we’re looking for there until we can make our sojourn to city hall tomorrow.”

Taeryn didn’t look all that happy but he didn’t say anything. Instead he took out one of his homemade cigarettes and lit it taking a long drag on it as he looked up at the sky and the hawk as she soared peacefully overhead.

Torri glanced up then reached out and gently touched Taeryn’s shoulder before she slipped quietly up the steps and walked into the Guest House yelling for Sam.

”Sam! We’re back and we’ve brought company.”

Things were quiet for a moment as Torri moved through the place looking for the short figure. Then Torri heard the unmistakable sound of Sam’s voice letting out a foul curse from down the hall. She walked back around the corner to see Sam standing there, hands on hips and staring outside with a deep frown on his brows. He glanced at Torri and snorted softly.

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Sam

“Do I even want to know? And why is there blood on your shirt?”

Torri glanced down to see the tell tale signs of blood speckled on her shirt and jacket and then looked up at Sam and shrugged slightly.

”Must have gotten there when we got into the fight. No prob. I have clean clothes here. I’ll slip upstairs, shower and change before dinner.”

As Sionn and Taeryn walked up the steps with Aurora and the wolf, Sam blinked and let out a soft, long whistle.

“Where’d the dame come from? Don’t tell me your brother is about to cause me trouble again with another daughter of some man I’d rather not have the pleasure of meeting again.”

Torri looked out the door as Aurora, Taeryn and Sionn started walking in. Keeping her voice low for Sam’s ears alone.

”Not this time. Not really sure who she is, Sam. Other than her name is Aurora.”

Torri looked down at Sam then.

”And she was attacked by some fool who burned her arm. And those beasties of hers seem to protect her somehow. She’s not just another pretty face. As much as it pains me to admit that.”

As the trio straggled in with the wolf in tow, Torri slipped past them all to the steps and started walking up them calling over her shoulder.

”I need to wash up before dinner. Might wanna consider that too, Sionn. Apparently Sam dunna like blood at his table.”

Sam glared up at Torri who grinned broadly back down at him before quickening her ascent. Sam looked at Sionn then and crossed his arms in front of him looking at the red head expectantly then casting a disapproving look to Taeryn before looking back at Sionn and raising both brows.

“Well? What gifts have ya brought to my door this time?”

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Indian10Aurora 'spoke' to Beau and Eryn and the raptor and wolf followed in the shadows, arriving at the guest house about the same time. They didn't come out until the cab driver had left, standing with Aurora at the entrance. She followed Sionn and Taeryn into the house, Beau beside her. She was looking around, making sure she knew where the exits were, her dark eyes taking in everything. She laid a hand on Beau's head, who growled low in his throat picking up on her growing nervousness. Eryn gave a cry outside, causing Aurora to turn and see the bird of prey perched on a tree limb just outside. Aurora made motions with her hands, clearly a form of sign language and Eryn gave another cry then flew to another tree, perching higher up.

She stopped when she saw the short, older man looking at her and saw Tori whisper something to him. She watched as Tori headed up the stairs then the older man approached. Beau instantly positioned himself so that he was in between him and Aurora, his amber eyes watching his every move. She laid a hand on him, quieting the wolf with a gentle touch.

"Hi..I'm Aurora Jameson. Thank you for allowing my companion to come in with me. He won't be any trouble." She smiled at him, "You have a beautiful place...it's peaceful."

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Sam

Sam glanced at the wolf then let his eyes slip back up Aurora to rest on her face. She was a beauty, no doubt about it. And the fact she communicated with the animals was no fluke either. She had a gift. One Sam hadn’t seen in many years.

“Yeah….well….just make sure your fury and feathery friends don’t make a mess of it. I’ve got three blokes from across the pond doing that well enough as it is.”

Sam stepped up to the wolf and extended his hand, knuckles up, and very slowly towards the lupines snout. He wasn’t afraid of the beast, just cautious as he should be. Beau snarled and gave a soft growl at first then as he sniffed the hand from a distance then closer up, he decided Sam was of no threat and sat down next to Aurora.

Sam slipped his hand back to his hip and sighed heavily then looked up at Aurora, Sionn and Taeryn.

“Tor is right. You all need a good washing before you sit down at my table. Dinner will be ready in about an hour. Take care of yourselves while I finish up the last of it. Check with Torri. I believe she’ll have some clothes she left here last time you can use cuz now that you’re in, there’s no going back out toots. Not with the shit that’s been happening around here lately anyway.”

He turned to walk back further into the house then stopped and turned back around pointing a chubby finger at Aurora.

“There’s an empty room at the end of the hall for you.”

He turned his finger on Taeryn then.

“And I put your stuff in the room across the hall from the carrot tops. Next time, you can take care of your own damn baggage. What the hell do you carry in that thing anyway? An anvil you might need to drop on someone’s head?”

The little man shook his head as he turned and walked away grumbling something no one could really understand.

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Indian10At Sam's words that she wouldn't be going back out, Aurora began to look a little panicked, casting a glance at the door then over to Sionn. "My things are back at the motel where I'd been staying. I need to get them." She rose, heading for the door when Beau put himself in between her and the door, looking up at her and whining. "I know, my friend....it's not safe but I must have my things." Beau nudged her, trying to push her away from the door. She turned to look at Sionn and Taeryn, and by the looks on their faces she knew she wasn't going to get any help from them. They seemed to be agreeing with Beau. Her dark eyes narrowed and her chin took a stubborn tilt.

"Beau....the rest of my knives and ceremonial clothing that I need to have. I am going." Beau bared his teeth at her, snapping them as they stood there at a stare-down. Finally, Beau looked away sounding as if he were grumbling as he stepped back to allow her to the door. She turned to the two men, "I will hail a cab and be back soon." Beau was going with her, that much was clear but the look he gave to Sionn and Taeryn was almost human like. It was the look that said, 'Help me out here.'

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Erich

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Annette

Annette looked over at Erich then back to Rhain and smiled even more, nodding her head.

“Aye….I’ll make sure I get ye a proper breakfast then, lad. If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be getting back to the house now.”

Annette walked out of the room leaving Rhain and Erich standing there alone. Erich studied the young man for a moment before he spoke.

“The cows can be a handful at times. They tend to get into mischief when they are left alone too long. If Sionn and Torri were here, they’d tell you the truth themselves. More than once they’ve had to bring the bovine back from someplace they shouldn’t have been. And needless to say, that’s the one thing that causes my daughter to have the grumps more than anything. The sheep aren’t much to handle. We just need to make sure the local carnivores don’t make a meal of them. Half the herd will need sheering in the next few days. That’s a process in itself. Hope you know how to handle sheers. If not, we’ll teach ye sure enough.”

Tucking his hands into his pockets, he looked around the room then back to Rhain.

“If ye need anything, don’t hesitate to come knocking on the door, lad. No matter the hour. Rest well. The morning hour comes early for waking around here.”

Erich turned and gently clasped Rhain’s shoulder as he turned in a kind gesture then slipped out of the room leaving the young man to his own thoughts and privacy.

****************
The next morning did come early. The sky was barely changing from darkness to light when Rhain heard a soft rap at his door and Erich’s voice on the other side.

“Rise and shine, lad. We need to gather the cattle ion the outer pastures before breakfast. I’ll meet ye outside. I’ll have a horse saddled up for ye.”

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans SionnBanner

Sionn could only watch with amusement as Sam grumped his way around. The old dwarf was always grumping but deep down he had a heart of gold and would do anything to ensure they were all safe and warm.

As Sam instructed them to get washed up and that dinner would be ready in an hour he smiled knowing that a good meal was in store, but then Aurora seemed to panic and insisted that she go get her things. Sionn looked at Taeryn and spoke, "We all know the grief of being seperated from the things we love don't we Tae."

He glanced back towards his sister who was disappearing into the guest house. He smirked knowing he had hit Tae's heart string about his sister and half laughed, "The lady here needs her stuff, and it would be wrong to send her into the night alone."

He turned to Aurora and spoke, "Let me go change my shirt so I am not walking around with blood on me and I will escort you, the animals draw too much attention if they go with you, and the last thing we need right now is attention."

Aurora nodded and he turned to Sam, "Don't give me that look ya grumbly old hob goblin."

Sam's face turned red and he spoke, "Lad I'll wallop ya into powder!"

Sionn laughed and ran up the stairs, almost knocking his sister over as she came out of her room and was heading for the bath, "WHOA, sorry sis. I need to leave again, for a short period, but I will return swiftly, hopefully in time for whatever smells so delicious."

Torri furrowed her brows at him and began to say something, "Aye, stop Torri, she needs our help, I know you don't trust a single person any further than you can throw them, but we can't just leave her to her own devices. Aye she seems capable enough to deal with things but having a forth person to assist us is a good thing, and what did Ma and Da always tell us? Treat others as we want to be treated." She mouthed the words along with him in an almost mocking fashion but then her face turned more serious.

"It's alright Torri, I'll be fine aye."

He leaned forward and in an affectionate gesture that they shared far less than they used to he placed his lips on her forehead and kissed her between the eyes, "Now go bathe, and no sleeping with Tae while I'm gone."

Her face turned to shock and she clenched her fists about to wallop him when he escaped down the hall, "I'll be back!"

Sionn came down the stairs and smiled brightly, Sam furrowed his brows having heard some of what he said and Sionn shook his head as he cut the dwarf off, "Stuff it old timer."

Turning to Aurora and then the Beau he spoke to the wolf, not knowing if the beastie would even understand him, "I'll take care of her."

The wolf seemed to bow his head in understanding and Sionn looked to Aurora, "Well then, shall we?"

Sam spoke up, "Cab should be here in a minute, I called after you went upstairs."

Sionn turned to Sam and smiled, "Thanks Sam."

Sam's face turned slightly serious, "Take care of yourself and the lassy. Dinner will be waiting lad."

Sionn nodded and opened the door for Aurora, the cab was pulling up just as he gestured for her to step outside, "We'll be back soon aye."

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans TorriBanner

Shock was a good word to describe Torri’s reaction to what Sionn said. She felt the heat rising in her face and knew she had to be eight shades of red with each one a deeper color than the last. She didn’t like the fact others knew she held feelings for Tae or that Sionn made mention of it. If Torri knew it and admitted it to herself that was one thing, but for the whole freakin’ world to know? Well….that was a different matter entirely. She glanced quickly at Taeryn to see if he had any clue what the topic of conversation was and was glad to see him not paying attention. Or at least making it look like he wasn’t, anyway.

But the bigger issue right now was Sionn and the fact he was leaving with the woman and that didn’t set well with Torri one bit. And by the looks on Sam’s face and Tae’s when he glanced up at her and Sionn, they weren’t happy about his leaving with this woman either.

As Sionn ducked out with Aurora and closed the door behind them, there was a deathly silence that followed as the three remaining people just looked at the door. Finally Sam grumbled as he turned to go back to the kitchen.

“You youngins are gonna kill me yet…..”

Torri blinked slowly then let her gaze settle on Tae’s when he looked up to see her standing there with her things clutched tightly in her arms. They shared a concerned look between them and something else Torri didn’t want to even give name to. Finally, with a heavy sigh and a slight nod of her head, she ducked into the bathroom.

*******************

A little while later, Torri was sitting in the sitting room with Taeryn and Sam with the wolf resting by the threshold of the room. Torri had retrieved her bow, assembled it almost lovingly, made some adjustments to the tension of the cord and placed the new arrows Sam left for her in her quiver she wore on her back.

The obsidian black of the bow was non-reflective and seemed to actually absorb the light from the lamps and fire that danced in the fireplace. As she set the bow carefully against the wall, she took the time to inspect her arrows once more.

Sam had his nose in the local paper and Taeryn sat ticking away on his laptop and on occasion exchanged text messages with someone on his phone. From the sounds of it, Torri guessed it to be his cousin, Jericho.

As Torri wiped down the bolts, she tested the titanium broad head and startled slightly when it expanded as she added pressure to the tip.

”Bloody hell….”

Taeryn snapped his gaze over to her and Sam, without missing a word he was reading, spoke up from behind the paper he was reading.

“Oh….forgot to tell you, they’re impact expanding heads. Causes the broad heads to expand another half inch in diameter. Thought you’d like that.”

Torri glanced over at the paper in front of Sam and smiled.

”You sure know how to get to a girls heart, Sam.”

Sam snorted softly.

“No. Just yours Torri. No other lass I know would find any enjoyment in weapons. But you…..you’re a different story all together.”

”You say that like it’s a bad thing, Sam.”

The paper dipped at one corner and Sam peered around the side of it.

“Not at all, lass. I’m just saying you’re one of a kind.”

Sam’s gaze drifted to Taeryn, who seemed interested in the topic at hand, and furrowed his gray brows.

“Like a rare gem.”

Seeing the look Taeryn gave him, Sam snapped the paper back into place and started reading again. Torri blinked and glanced over at Taeryn who blinked then went back to his laptop. As the last arrow was placed in Torri’s quiver, she leaned back in her chair and let out a heavy sigh.

“It ain’t been that long yet. Give them a little more time. I know patience hasn’t always been your thing, but sometimes you gotta have it….”

Torri frowned at the paper in front of Sam and was thinking about making a face at him when the little man spoke up again.

“Don’t even think of making a face at me. You know it’s true.”

Torri blinked and felt like a kid who had just gotten caught with their hand in the cookie jar then glanced back up at the clock, then over to the wolf, over to Taeryn then back at the paper.

It was going to be a loooooong night.

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Indian10Aurora wasn't very happy about leaving Beau but she knew that Sionn was right. Eryn was another story altogether though as the bird of prey followed them using her binocular vision to keep sight of the cab. Having very little experience with the opposite sex let alone people in general, she was quiet, unsure of what to say. Sionn was definitely good looking but she had a feeling that he knew it and that didn't sit well with her. He was nice enough, but she knew enough to know that when a man knew he was good looking and knew women liked him it tended to go to his head.

Within forty-five minutes they pulled up into a Super 8 hotel and she stepped out of the cab asking the driver to wait for them. She entered the small lobby, walking up to the desk and the young man standing there. "I will be checking out tonight and since it's after the normal check out time I need to know if I will be charged a full night's amount." The young man smiled flirtatiously at her which she promptly ignored, deflating his ego immediately. "Yes ma'am...you will be charged full amount, but you're brothers already went up to your room to gather your things. They said that you'd sent them." Aurora turned dark eyes onto the young man and he took a step back when her dark brown eyes became even darker. "You mean to tell me that you allowed someone into my room on just their word only? If anything is missing or damaged I will have your job." The nice, innocent woman was instantly gone and in her place was a very angry warrior. She gave Sionn a look then hurried to the stairs, not wanting to wait for the elevator.

She only had to go up to the second level and then half-way down the hall to her room where her door was cracked open. She pulled a wicked looking blade from a sheath at her thigh that blended in with her clothing and put herself flush against the wall, motioning to Sionn to do the same. Leaning over a little, she pushed open the door and quickly looked. She then sniffed the air, smelling the odor of stale sweat and a sickening cologne, but it was fading. Sure that they were gone she cautiously entered the room, finding it completely ransacked. Her clothing had been destroyed, her luggage as well with deep gashes from a knife. It was clear that they were looking for something and she knew what. The small quiver she had tied to her back made of the softest and yet most durable deerskin. It was centuries old and never left her side.

Thrown on the floor were 5 arrows. They looked like your every day wooden, Native American arrows and no one would be able to tell that they were anything but that. She picked them up carefully, inspecting them making sure they were still intact. She breathed a sigh of relief as she removed the small quiver from beneath her jacket at her back and laid it on the shredded bed. It didn't look like much....just a quiver made from deerskin and yet there was an otherwordly glow about it that only certain people could see. The beadwork was beautiful and yet again, very normal for a Native American item. She looked up at Sionn and smiled at him, "This is Hiawatha's quiver and his arrows. He was my great-great-great-great-great grandfather. Before he died, the Great Spirit bestowed upon him a bow with a quiver and five arrows. The bow has great power and turns the arrows into whatever weapon the handler needs at the time. Whether it be fire, ice, stone or wood. Once the arrows are placed within the sacred quiver, they never run out..always reproducing for the handler of the bow." As she spoke, she stroked the softness of the quiver her face having a far away look on it. "The bow was stolen many years ago, then found and then lost. When the unrest began, my mother began training me in earnest knowing that as the last descendent of Hiawatha, I must find the bow before it falls into the hands. Whomever has the bow with the quiver and arrows will be almost impossible to defeat."

Her breath then caught in her throat as she looked over beneath where some of her clothing had been hung. Laying on the floor was a beautiful, Native American dress made out of the hide of an albino doe, colorful beads all over the floor. The dress itself was in in tatters. Tears sprung to her eyes as she knelt on the floor next to it, gathering up the remains in her hands. "No!! They have destroyed it....they have destroyed the sacred dress. Handed down for generations from mother to daughter. It is the dress of Hiawatha's wife and is to be worn when the bow, quiver and arrows are reunited." She could see that there was no way to fix it....it had been utterly destroyed. She turned back to Sionn, her face grief-stricken for the loss of the dress. She stood, dropping what was left of the dress to the floor and gathered up the five arrows and quiver. "At least they weren't smart enough to realize that the arrows went with the quiver", she said, trying to see something good in the mess. "I have what I came for, Sionn", she said as she cast one last look to the remains of the dress. "We should get back."

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans RhainBanner
Rhain's eyes opened easily and he cleared his throat before answering the voice on the other side of the door with a somewhat sleepy "aye!" Rolling over, he sat up and found that he had apparently gotten hot during the night and stripped off most of his clothes. Pulling his pants back on, he opened the door and greeted Erich with a nod as he scratched his matted hair. "Marnin'," he said with a pleasant smile. The sun was barely crossing the horizon and the biting morning cold stung his bare chest. "Be out in a bit, no worries." Disappearing back into the little room, he washed his mouth out and spat onto the ground outside. He then pulled on the rest of his clothes and headed out to where Erich waited with a horse. Rhain walked easily up to the animal who seemed to take an immediate liking to him, nuzzling his neck and letting him climb onto it. The horse was even patient when Rhain, not used to riding anything but bare-back, caught his foot on the bulky saddle and had to try again. He managed to get his leg up, though and leaned over by the horse's ear, letting out a soft sort of purr that somehow urged the animal in the direction of the pastured. "The beasties'll be this way, I gather?" Erich was looking back at him with a look of piqued interest but nodded nonetheless. "Aye," said Rhain, "I'll take it from here then." With a commanding sort of grunt at the horse, he took off at a moderate gallop commanding the horse with such ease, he might have known it its whole life.

Rhain was out of Erich's sight when the ever-lightening silhouettes of sheep and cows came into view. With a quick glance around to make sure he was alone, Rhain conjured a small light in one hand while gently controlling the horse with the other. Some of the animals looked curiously at the light in his hand and as he rode around the herd, began to collect into a small cluster. "Aye, c'mon now, it's time ta move," he said with a grin. The horse galloped and trotted around the herd and very quickly they began moving calmly in the direction he was hoping they would. Within minutes, the cows and sheep were meandering as one back towards the house with Rhain zig-zagging around them talking as though to children. "Oi oi, don't wander off!" he said, riding around a lamb that was straying, "wee ones need ta stay with the group. Oi, and you cows watch those little sheep now, eh? Don't want anyone gettin' hurt now." Like school children following a teacher, the cows moved slightly away from the sheep and continued on their way, mooing softly as though in agreement. The sun was still little more than a pale glow stretching over the horizon when the sheep and cows were gathered around the house once more and Rhain's horse was trotting back to its stable. When it stopped, Rhain dismounted a little clumsily and gave the horse a soft pat on the nose as it let out a soft, affectionate sort of whinny and nuzzled him again. "Thanks for the ride," he said, smiling.

Not in any rush for human company, Rhain wandered casually into the middle of the herd and took in the crisp morning air with a deep inhale through his nose. The smell of fresh, dew-soaked grass and the contemplation of snow filled his nostrils like a pleasant greeting from nature. Turning, he watched the sun climb a little higher over the green hills. The longer he stood, the more the animals seemed to be drawn to him. It wasn't long before a small cluster of sheep at cows had formed around him. It wasn't as though they were interacting, really, but more like the grass around Rhain's feet seemed to be significantly tastier than any of the other grass around the house. Rhain seemed to barely notice as he simply watched the world wake up with a look of calm serenity on his face. Breakfast was the farthest thing from his mind until one of his employers re-appeared.

PostSubject: Re: Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans   Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Icon_minitimeMon Jan 02, 2012 3:33 pm

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Indian10Aurora's cell phone rang then and she answered it, seeing that it was her mother.

"I'm okay momma.......the quiver and arrows are intact......no, the dress has been destroyed. I know......yes, momma, I know the dress is only for ceremonial purposes, but it was a beautiful heirloom and ancient. There is no way to replace it......Yes, I am safe. I have met some people....a brother and sister from across the ocean....(Aurora chuckles).....I should have guessed that you would have already have seen them in your visions.....I must go......yes, I will be careful....Momma...I love you."

The conversation over she turned to Sionn, her dark eyes filled with unshed tears. She missed her mother horribly and her forest, but she had a job to do and she couldn't go back until it was completed. Gathering what little was left of her belongings along with the quiver, arrows and what was left of the dress, she also gathered up as many of the beads as she could and put them in a small, leather pouch. She then walked out of the room and headed down the stairs and went straight to the receptionist, laying the ruined doeskin dress on the counter, in front of other patrons that had arrived.

"My so called 'brothers' that you so foolishly let into my room ruined my dress", she said her voice very calm and yet one could hear the underlying anger. "My suitcase and most of my things are ruined. I wish to speak to your manager.....now." The young man was instantly on the phone, knowing that to argue with the woman would be a mistake. Within minutes, an older man came out and stood in front of Aurora who smiled up at him. "Your young receptionist here allowed strangers into my room while I was gone by their word only that they were my brothers. My room was ransacked and this ceremonial dress was destroyed." The others that were standing around began to talk amongst themselves about finding other accommidations and the manager began to look rather nervous. "I'm sure we can resolve this issue, Miss......please, accept my sincerest apologies and a full refund for your stay." Aurora nodded her head then looked at the young man, "And what about him? He allowed them into my room." The manager turned a stern gaze onto the young man then looked back at Aurora. "He will be released from his employment, Miss Jameson, for allowing strangers into your room." Nodding her head, Aurora gathered up the scraps of the dress and turned to leave. She looked to see if Sionn was there, having all but forgotten him in her dealings with the receptionist and manager.

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans SionnBanner

The cab ride was fairly quiet, Sionn chattered away in his usual manner but he could tell that this young woman was not a sap by any stretch, if he was going to charm her it would take more than the green eyes and thick red hair to do it. At times she seemed slightly captivated but would then recede, it reminded him of the waves hitting the shore back home in Scotland, slowly, surely working their way up the rocks of the cliffs, committing slightly more with each impact.

They arrived at the small, rather seedy looking hotel and Sionn escorted Aurora into the lobby, staying silent so she could do what she needed to do. When the young man behind the desk said he had let her 'brothers' into the room Sionn quirked an eyebrow and gave Aurora a concerned glance. They went with haste to the room and Sionn too could smell the stale remnants of those who had entered. He reached into his coat and behind his back, withdrawing the two black rods that could flare to life and become his duel maces. As Aurora signaled she was going in Sionn was right behind her, keeping guard and on full alert. Once the small room was checked and Sionn knew they were alone he replaced his weapons and sighed internally as he saw the grief on Aurora's face. Clearly the things that were destroyed were dear to her, especially the dress. As she explained the significance of the arrows he gave her a look of genuine sympathy and spoke, "I am sorry to hear all this lass, I can no promise anything but perhaps once T and I are done with this mission we can look into finding your artifact. My Pa is the Lore Keeper for our clan, though we don't tend to deal with Native American or Colonial artifacts he might be able to point you on a path, aye?"

He patted her gently on the shoulder in a sympathetic way and sighed as he looked around the room, "Whatever they were after they certainly made a mess looking."

As they walked down to the lobby Sionn could see the rage building on Aurora's face and stood behind her but said nothing as she berated the manager and looked on with satisfaction as the desk clerk was sacked right before their eyes. When she turned and almost seemed surprised to see him standing there still he smiled his charming grin and spoke softly, "Come lass, let's back to Sam's."

The ride back was silent. Aurora cuddled the dress like it was a dead family member and though he could not relate completely he did understand. As the pulled up to Saint Peter's Sionn could see Torri in the office talking to Sam. Aurora and Sionn walked in and he gave her a look that spoke volumes, clearly something had happened. The dress in Aurora's arms was a conformation of his facial expression and Sionn turned to Sam, "Hey Grumpy, are you still capable of tooling leather with those old gnarled fingers of yours?"

Sam furrowed his brows and brought his hands up, resting them on the counter, "As likely to slap the smart out of your mouth as they are to tool leather lad."

Sionn laughed and then gestured to Aurora, "Our new friend here has an article that was vandalized wrongfully, anything you can do?"

Sam put his half moon glasses on his chubby nose and looked at the article as Aurora laid it on the counter, "Aye lad, I think I might be able to," he looked up at Aurora, "If I have the ladies permission that is."

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Indian10Aurora didn't say anything to Sionn on the way back to Sam's. She just nodded her head in thanks at his offer of helping her find what she was looking for once he and Torri were done with their search. Clutching the sacred dress to her chest, she turned dark brown eyes, made darker by the sadness she was feeling, onto him. She had to admit, he was handsome but she had no experience with men and no idea what to do.

Once back at Sam's, she somberly walked in behind Sionn, seeing Torri with the short man in an office. She was glad that the red headed woman didn't make any snide remarks this time, already having a difficult time holding back the tears over the dress and the ransacking of her room. She'd never been through anything like that....never had her personal belongings been vandalized before and it had definately shaken her up a bit as well as fueled her temper. She almost missed what Sionn was asking Sam when he gently guided her to the counter. She laid the dress down, her hands lovingly smoothing the tattered remains. When Sam said that he could repair the dress, she looked back and forth between the two men, at first unsure that she'd heard him correctly. "You can mend the dress? Truly?" When Sam grumbled something but nodded his head she ran around the counter and hugged him to her. Bending over, she kissed his cheek then ran to Sionn and threw her arms around him in a hug. Just as quickly she let go of him, blushing brightly beneath her golden skin, mumbling apologies as she stepped back.

Sam could not hide his face as Aurora came around the counter, he was happy to help someone in need and as she hugged him the tough exterior melted for a moment and he patted her gently on the shoulder, "There, there lass, it has been a while since I tooled leather, but I am certain I can repair it good as new."

As Aurora came around and hugged Sionn he returned her embrace, she was warm, her body pressed against his was inviting and soft, but the sharp glance from his sister caused him to keep himself in the room and not drift off to fantasy land. As she pulled back Sionn smiled and nodded as he reached for her hand, "It's alright lass, you have friend now."

Torri rolled her eyes slightly and Sionn watched her over Aurora's shoulder as he spoke to her, "So what have you found out?"

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Sam

Sam had no time to react to Aurora’s burst of affection and as she slipped behind the counter to hug him and kiss his cheek he made a mumbling protest and tried to hold his hands up to stop her, but it was too late. When she released him and hugged Sionn, he glanced at Torri and raised his bushy brows daring her to make any kind of comment about the woman’s actions. Knowing what would happen if she dared say anything, Torri remained as silent as a church mouse.

“Yeesh, lass, you didn’t have to go all….emotional on me. A simple yes would have done the job. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get started on trying to repair this poor thing.”

He glanced up at Aurora and gave her a small smile.

“No promises I can make it pretty again, though. But I’ll try my best.”

Turning his back on the others, he disappeared into the back of the house where most of his own personal rooms were located.

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans TorriBanner

Never had Torri been so glad to see someone in all her life as she was glad to see Sionn again. Rarely did she NOT accompany Sionn when he left on anything that was even remotely dangerous. Facts showed they were always better when they were together than they were when they were alone. She’d paced the floor at Sam’s to the point where the little man had demanded she go into the office with him while Taeryn did his research on the internet. Not to mention the fact Sam could see Taeryn was starting to get irritated at Torri with her innocent yet constant interruptions to his work.

When the cab pulled up out front of Sam’s place, Torri stopped talking to Sam and listened to the doors as they were shut taking mental count. When she heard the two she knew they were both returning and she went to greet them in the foyer. As the door opened and Sionn came walking in followed by Aurora, she had a comment on the tip of her tongue she quickly swallowed down when she saw the look on Sionn’s face.

Instantly Torri was ready for a fight with something…anything…and she looked past Sionn to Aurora and then out to the empty street. Well, she thought, nothing was directly a threat to them right now, anyway. Turning her attention back to Sionn and Aurora, she saw the woman cradled something in her grasp and the look on the woman’s face was nothing short of devastated.

As Sionn spoke with Sam about the dress, Torri glanced at the garment and furrowed her brows. She could tell it was Native American by the look of it but she also saw the intricate work that had been done on it as well. Even in the destroyed state some of the craftsmanship could be identified.

She glanced at Aurora then and knew this woman was more than your average citizen on tour, holiday or anything else. Perhaps she was like Sionn and herself or maybe she was like Taeryn. But Taeryn would have been able to tell if she was like him so she could scratch that off the list. So what did that leave? She was too one sided to be like she and Sionn so that meant she had to be on the side of the light, as Torri called it.

As the knowledge of what Aurora possibly was started to sink in Sionn would be able to tell by looking at his sister she was putting the puzzle pieces together to make a complete picture. There was only one a few pieces left to fit into place and as Torri glanced at Sionn, he could tell she was getting ready to find out what they were. Torri glanced at Aurora and gone was the angry tone from her voice as she spoke to the woman.

”Why are you really in New Orleans, Aurora? It’s not just for Holiday. And I don’t believe in coincidences any more than I can toss Sam here about. And why are your things being vandalized? Obviously this is no ordinary Native American dress and who ever tried to trash it wanted to make sure you weren’t able to use it for anything again. And the fact you’re here the same time we are doesn’t give me a warm fuzzy feeling either….”

She looked at Sionn then knowing he would understand her concern. And with Taeryn in the mix, it was almost as though someone WANTED to make sure they were all there. But…..why?

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Indian10Aurora looked at Torri a few seconds, before answering her. "I am a direct descendant of Hiawatha....a great Mohican warrior. His bow is sacred as is the quiver and five arrows. The arrows, I needed to retrieve from my hotel room along with the dress. The bow was reported missing a few months ago. My mother, Hiawatha's great-great-great-great and so on grandaughter taught me about my ancestor and his wife. She also mentioned yesterday on the phone something about a Black Horn artifact and something about Druidic brothers. I don't know how the Horn and the bow are connected, Mom was rather discreet even in her e-mail she'd sent me. All I know is that whomever acquires the bow with the quiver and five arrows will be almost unstoppable. The arrows, once placed within the quiver, never run out. Once notched into the bow the arrow becomes whatever the shooter needs. Whether it be stone, fire, earth or simply speed. Either way, the arrow becomes all but unstoppable. Mom has tracked to here, in this spiritual city and I am here to find it and return it to my ancestor's land of birth."

She didn't know what else to say, only what she'd told them and she hoped that she got across to them just how important was to find the bow and keep the quiver and arrows from falling into the wrong hands as well. "Why are you all here? I have explained myself......but I still know little about you. I can feel that our lives were meant to cross, but why?"

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans SionnBanner

Sionn watched the exchange between Sam and Aurora, as Sam walked off to bring the dress back into his shop he patted her gently on the shoulder, "Don't worry lass, Sam's been at this for a good long while, if there is anyone that can repair it I am certain he can."

Sionn turned and looked at Torri as she asked her pointed question. He let his eyes linger on his sister a moment before turning them to Aurora for the answer. He too was curious, and where he was too subtle about going about to get the answer Torri had just come right out with it. He didn't want Aurora to feel too much on the spot, but the fact was they had too little time to look for answers, they needed them, and fast. When she explained her mission and the Black Horn came up Sionn instantly shifted his gaze to Torri, two people after the same artifact, this was NEVER a good situation, especially when the McGhee's had the knowledge that a third, and much more sinister party was also interested in the artifact.

Sionn began to pace slowly, his eyes traced the pattern in the floor as he pondered the situation and exactly what was unfolding before them. Exactly how were these things connected? The bow, was clearly an artifact of North American origin, the Black Horn was rumored to be Romanian, two cultures that had never in the history of earth coexisted or mingled with one another, at least not to anyone's knowledge that Sionn knew of. He looked up at Torri, clearly unable to put together any of the pieces and shrugged lightly as he spoke, "Doesn't make sense sis, these artifacts are world's apart, there's no connection that even vaguely would play out and make sense. Either there's something out there that we don't know, or it's simply a power grab, either way I don't like what I am hearing."

He caught Aurora's curious glance and he spoke, "Our Father is the Lore Keeper, he has volumes upon volumes of documentation that trace artifacts and ancient lore, some of them to the beginning of the first races on this planet. The Black Horn is wrapped in mystery, even our Da' knows little about it, I don't know if he knows anything about your families bow, but we could certainly find out. I will email him this evening and find out. How your mother is even aware of the Black Horn is puzzling enough, but to answer your question, we are seeking the Black Horn as well."

Torri gave him a sharp glance and he spoke to her, "She's gon' figure it out anyway T, for crying out loud we are in the process of trying to figure out how to get into the bloody place where we think it is. If there's a connection we need to sort it out."

He turned and looked at Aurora, "But I need to tell you, we have to take the Black Horn to Scotland if it is found, I am sorry if that puts a kink in any plan you or your mother might have, but the artifact belongs in Father's security, it's much too dangerous an item to be out in the world. Our charge is to return it safely to Scotland, at all costs."

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Indian10Aurora looked at Sionn, giving him a smile. "It doesn't put a kink in any plans of ours, Sionn....quite the opposite in fact. As for the connection, I don't know how, but momma indicated that they are connected somehow. My father was Scottish/Irish, coming from northern Scotland. He settled in the Appalacian mountains where he met my mother. He is descended from Druids if that helps any, but I don't much more than that. He died when I was very young."

She became thoughtful for a few minutes then looked at him and Torri, "What if the connection isn't a connection at all. What if it's more of these druidic brothers found out about these artifacts and the bow is more a form of offense or defense that is all but unbeatable. I don't know what the horn does, but with the bow and quiver of five arrows, the bearer would be well protected as far as weaponry goes. Perhaps that is the connection. The bow is simply a form of unbeatable weaponry." She thought that her idea sounded far fetched, but she couldn't think of any other way the two could be connected.

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans TorriBanner

It was enough to make Torri’s head spin with questions, questions and more questions. And the more questions that went unanswered was starting to make her head hurt. She didn’t like Sionn divulging anything but deep down, she knew he was right. This woman would figure it out sooner or later. It still didn’t mean Torri would like it any more than she already did.

”If the Druids wanted protection, they wouldn’t use a bow. No matter how enchanted a thing it be. It simply doesn’t fit in with their way of doing things. And so far, all the crazed bastards we’ve run across have kept true to their abilities and not reached outside their realm of expertise. No. There’s a reason these two things are here at the same time. But finding out what before it’s too late will be like looking for a needle in a hay stack, or so to speak. And with the silence coming from Tae, I would say he’s not getting any closer to trying to figure this out than we are.”

Like Sionn, Torri paced the floor just as her brother did moments before. It was an inherited trait from their mother neither one of them could break and neither one of them wanted to. The creases on Torri’s forehead grew deeper as she paced and when she finally stopped, she looked up at Sionn.

”Da is gonna HAVE to try and find a connection between them. He’s the only one who can at this point. If we try we’ll drive ourselves batty trying to put the pieces together. In the meantime, we’ll need to stay extra vigilant in case any of those goons try to come in here tonight. Not to mention the razorbacks that will be creeping about the ally ways tonight. Suffice it to say, we’re stuck here til morning light.”

She looked over at Aurora then back to Sionn and sighed heavily.

”Not exactly how we thought things would work out, huh, bro?”

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans SionnBanner

Sionn listened to Aurora and returned her smile. He could not help but be captivated by her beauty, the smooth lines of her face and neck, the tan of her skin, much different than the almost lily white of he and his sisters. Even her American accent was sexy and as she spoke to him, but there was something different about her, something that was beyond being a mark. It was making his head fuzzy, but he stuffed those feelings deep down, there was bigger things to concentrate on... but still.

He looked over at his sister, her brows were furrowed, she knew his thoughts, and he could tell it was annoying her that he was concentrating, again, on a woman instead of the mission. She had told him a few years back that it was going to get one of them killed one day, maybe she was right, or maybe not. He swallowed hard and cleared his throat, respecting her distaste for his womanizing, at least for now.

"Agreed, this isn't how we thought things would work out. It seems strange in deed that these artifacts are connected... I'm gonna call Da', something like this can't wait, we need answers and quick."

He could tell by Torri's expression that she agreed and he nodded with a timid smile. Despite being the oldest and being in line to be the Lore Keeper someday she still held a lot of sway over him, and having just received her indignant glace a few seconds ago was obviously affecting him, "I'll be right back."

Torri tossed him the secure sat phone and he disappeared into the back room.

He returned after 15 minutes with a grey look on his face. He walked up and looked at Torri, speaking, "Da says the lore objects are doppelgangers, one needs the other, neither can function without the other. All the world requires balance in all things, that is the purpose of our very existence, to preserve the balance of the factions of good and evil. Da' knows little but told me The Black Horn has been in existence for over ten thousand years, the last time it was used was in 1290A.D. to cause an earthquake in Chijli, China that killed almost 100,000 people. Like many of the most ancient artifacts of ancient times it is coupled with an artifact of equal and substantial power and can only be used in conjunction with that "sister" item. I know the math doesn't make sense, Hiawatha was born just under 300 years after the earthquake, Da' says this is because the original partner item was destroyed and a new one wasn't created until Hiawatha, in an attempt to restore the balance to the system, created the bow. Unfortunately the Black Horn's where abouts were unknown at this time and Hiawatha was unable to charge it with the sister item, so though his bow functions it is not paired with the Black Horn. The unique properties of Hiawatha's bow and the five arrows are an exact replica of the original object, the Bow of Attila. When the horn is blown and the arrow of choice is sent to it's target, an effect is produced that coincides with the arrow fired and the natural faults in the landscape, for example, an arrow of fire flung into a dormant volcano will cause an eruption, an arrow of stone into a fault line, an earthquake, one of water into the sea, flooding or hurricane. The premise is simple but the depth of the magic is broad. Of course because the objects are unattuned to one another, the effects if they are used can not be predicted. So it begs the question, is the purpose to attune them, or use them."

He could see the looks of concern on Torri and Aurora's faces, and he simply shook his head softly, not knowing the answer himself.

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans TorriBanner

”Or both….”

It took Torri a few moments to put some more pieces together so there was silence among the three for a few minutes, but when Torri spoke, her face was about as grey as Sionn’s. Her green eyes drifted from Sionn to Aurora’s and back again.

”Don’t you see? We already know an otherwise extinct House crawled out of the holes they were thought to be long buried in. A House schooled in the art of war using primitive weapons as their specialty. In particular…..the bow. And not only do they use these weapons with remarkable accuracy, they do it all while moving at rapid speeds from moving objects they use. Again, I don’t find this a coincidence in the least. The timing is all too synched. If they know both things have to be attuned before they use it, who’s to say they aren’t trying to do both? From what I remember from working with Da, there’s no set time you have to wait when the dopplegangers become attuned to each other to use them. They can happen simultaneously.”

Torri looked away and furrowed her brows as she started to pace the confined space again. There was something in the works that pointed to an all out Armageddon if they didn’t get this figured out. And fast. It was going to take a hell of a lot more than the people occupying Sam’s place right now.

She glanced down the hall and saw the soft glow of the laptop letting her know Taeryn was still hard at work trying to get the pieces of the puzzle to fit together on his end. What she didn’t like was the fact his puzzle no doubt would somehow fit together with her and Sionn’s that would fit together with Aurora’s that would fit together with Jericho’s….

And on and on and on…..

Finally she stopped and looked over at Sionn.

”And here you thought it would be a walk in the park…..forever the optimist brother. Guess that’s why I can’t help but love ya so much. Yer glass half full always balances my glass half empty and cracked outlook. Well….I suppose we’d best get to looking through some more of Sam’s collection to figure out if there’s anything in there that could shed some more light on the matter.”

She looked over at Aurora then.

”Might as well join us….yer into this waist deep already. Might as well have help to pull ya above water when the waters are raging high.”

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans Indian10Aurora was confused. She knew that she had been sheltered most of her life, but she didn't realize just to what extent until now. Doppleganger.....extinct house....druids. Her mother had trained her to fight the battle against evil, but she'd left out one very important part of her training. How to deal with life outside of the mountains. Sensing her growing distress, Beau padded over to her, whining as his long snout nudged her hand. She knelt down, wrapping her arms around his neck and buried her face into the thick ruff of fur, drawing on his strength and calmness to help her calm her rapidly beating heart. She was so out of her element here that it wasn't even funny and it made her feel small and unworthy to be in the company of those who knew how to deal with life outside of their own homes. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, murmuring a thanks in the wolf's ear.

"My head is spinning with all this new information", she said as she stood up. "I don't know about you two, but sleep sounds good about now." She looked at Sionn then at Torri, "If you could tell me where it is I'll be sleeping again I would appreciate it." She followed the directions given to her by a not too happy Torri, still trying to figure out why the woman seemed to dislike her. She have herself a mental shrug and headed up the stairs to what would be her room, Beau following her and Eryn gliding up the stairs to the top where she then landed and hopped behind Aurora and Beau.

The room was simple yet comfortable as she prepared for bed, her head spinning in all different directions with what she'd just learned. She'd thought ahead and had mentioned to Sam that if he had any large pieces of scrap plastic, she would use that to put beneath Eryn's foldable perch so that the great bird didn't make a mess of his floor when she relieved herself. Once finished with making sure Eryn was comfortable she dressed for bed herself, putting on her short, shorts and turquoise blue tank top. She then grabbed her toothbrush and toothpaste and padded quietly out of the room to head for the bathroom to brush her teeth, her thoughts a jumble.

~Oh, momma....you left out so much in my teachings about the outside world. I am lost here and yet the man, Sionn, makes me feel things I've never felt and eases my feeling of being overwhelmed with everything by just being near me. But, there is something more important that must be seen to. How am I going to get this done, Momma? I can care for myself in the mountains....but here in the so called concrete forests with people I am all but lost.~ She was thinking to herself as she brushed her teeth then dried her hands and face and left the bathroom. Taking a deep breath, she headed back to her room, knowing that regardless of how she felt about all of this and being out of her element, she had a mission to accomplish and she would see it done no matter what. She had to retrieve Hiawatha's bow to her people along with the sacred quiver and 5 arrows. The Black Horn meant little to her, except that now the two relics were connected. She was almost glad that Sionn and his sister would take the Black Horn with them once it was retrieved, even though it meant that Sionn would leave as well.

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans SionnBanner

Sionn listened to his sister and nodded without saying a word. As Aurora spoke up he smiled and walked over to her, clasping her hand in his own and leaned forward whispering into her ear, "You did well tonight, many would have crumbled under the stress. Be proud."

He smiled and squeezed her hand gently as she turned and went up the stairs. He watched her and as she disappeared around the corner he walked over to Torri and Sam. Torri had her brows deep into her eye sockets and he inhaled deeply as he sluffed off her discontent with him, "There's more Da said..."

Sam instantly looked up from his newspaper and Torri's gaze softened as she practically begged him to tell her. He started speaking in Scots Gaelic to avoid the prying ears that might be listening, "Aurora is connected to all this. She might not know it, but she is. A Druid can not use the bow, nor can one aligned with the light use an artifact of darkness. In order for the two items to be used there must be one of each faction present. Da says that in history these sorts of objects were designed to bring harmony to the planet and were used when certain populations threatened the existence of the whole planet. In the case of the earthquake in Chijli a virus had been introduced to the planet by means of an accidental collision with a rogue comet. The comet was infested with a disease that could have and most likely would have destroyed the entire ecosystem and destroyed life on the entire planet. As stewards the factions of light and darkness came together and utilized the artifacts to wipe out those infested. The Druid, Grendalhosh Poe turned on the Sentinel using Attila's bow. She was blown off a cliff side and disappeared into the void their earthquake had opened, the Bow of Attila lost to the core of the planet."

"As you know there were massive migrations over the next several hundred years, some of the descendants of Attila made their way to North America and founded new homes, and new tribes, which means ultimately Aurora is not only ancestor to Hiawatha, but possibly Attila. History remembers Attila as a man of evil, but the fact is he was a Sentinel, and a damn good one at that. There is great power in his bloodline and if Aurora is a descendent of his, or if there is his blood in her family somewhere, it could prove quite important to the House of Raven. Aurora would have to consent to whatever plan the Poe's are concocting, unless they have found a way to get around the lock of alignment which Da' says is improbable but not necessarily impossible."

He leaned back and touched his finger to his forehead and sighed, "I need a drink, and a lass..."

Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans TorriBanner

As Torri listened to what Sionn was telling her and Sam, she absorbed the information like dry sponges absorbed water. It wasn’t the best news she heard but it wasn’t as grim as news she heard in the past either. Her eyes drifted up towards the stairs where Aurora had disappeared and Torri sighed heavily as Sionn explained the woman’s connection to the whole situation.

Her Ma & Da told her things always came full circle. It was the natural evolution of life. Balance was integral to all living things on the planet and when things began to shift one direction or the other, unlikely allies were formed to preserve that delicate balance. Such as what Sionn explained. Of course when the threat was eliminated it was all bets off and no holds barred the instant balance was restored.

Chewing on her bottom lip as she always did when she was deep in thought, Torri put more pieces of the puzzle together as Sionn talked. There was no doubt now in her mind Aurora had been brought to New Orleans by the Poes. Did they actually have the bow or was it just a ploy to get what they needed here first before the bow was delivered?

That was the question of the century right now, wasn’t it?

As Sionn sat back and rubbed his forehead sighing, Torri couldn’t help but feel for her brother. His usual cheeriness had faded and she could see the lines of worry beginning to crease his brow. She was the worrier. Not Sionn. She was the one to find the lump of coal in the pot of gold. Not Sionn. She was the one to bear the weight of duty on her shoulders. Not Sionn. And yet….she saw the weight slowly sinking upon him and she walked over to sit on the arm of the chair he sat in.

Reaching out she put her hand around his shoulders gently as she looked down at him. When he looked up and settled his matching green gaze with her, she smiled a true smile and spoke softly in her Gaelic language. Her words were almost song like as her native language was her favorite.

”We’ll be there, Sionn. And we’ll make sure we have her back when they try to do to her what they did to her ancestor. We’re the best of the best at what we do. And she will have the courage to do what needs to be done. I can see it starting to build in her already. And how can it not with you close to her?”
