Sionn leaned forward and looked at Torri with his flashy smile. He didn't say anything, he just smiled.

He stood up and looked out the window. It was getting dark and people were making their way down the road towards Burbon Street where all the action in the French Quarter of New Orleans was to be found. After a few minutes he turned and looked at his sister, "Get changed T, we're going out."

She looked at him with an immediate expression on her face that said, "No way!" but he walked over to her quickly before she could protest, "We have been working hard, we need to blow off some steam, it will do us well to get out and absorb some of this American culture.

Sam huffed loudly and Sionn turned to look at him, "What are you about old timer?" Sam crossed his brow and looked at Sionn, "This place isn't American, it's a dive, a free for all where anything goes, I wouldn't base my opinion of America on what happens around here. It's a tourist trap, a big show, a place for people to come and pretend there is no real world to live in."

Sionn smiled and turned to Torri, "Well there you have it, a perfect place to forget what is going on, at least for a night! Now get changed and I will see you back here in ten minutes." With that Sionn disappeared upstairs to get changed.

Torri’s eyes flashed from Sam to Sionn. As much as Torri agreed with Sam, she knew Sionn would venture out on his own no matter what and she simply couldn’t have that hanging over her head if something happened to him. While Sionn could fend for himself with no problem, Torri was one who believed they were always better together than alone. And well…..she didn’t want Sionn to be by imself. Especially after what Sam had just told them.

As Sionn slipped upstairs, Torri held Sam’s disapproving gaze.

”I promise….I’ll keep a close eye on him, Sam.”

Sam raised both bushy brows and crossed his arms over his thick chest.

”And that’s supposed to make me feel good, lass? The old saying of something about a fox watching a hen house comes to mind right now….”

Torri frowned.

”And I’m supposed to just leave him go on his own? At least with me h….

Sam held his hand up to silence Torri’s words.

”Let me make this as clear as I can, Torri….nothing about t his will make me feel good until you both are back here….unscathed. Just promise me you’ll take your bow and the arrows I gave you earlier. You know you can keep them hidden until you need them. At least with them you’ll have a chance.”

Torri gave half a sigh half a growl of agitation.

”You make it sound like we can’t take care of ourselves, Sam.”

Sam nodded.

“My point exactly.”

Torri sighed again.

”We’ll be jus fine, Sam…..you’ll see….”

Without waiting for Sam’s tart reply, Torri turned and headed up the stairs. A few minutes later, she was walking down the stairs with Sionn dressed in favorite black jeans, black shirt and black and red leather jacket. Her bow and the arrows Sam gave her when they arrived were hidden on her perfectly.

As they reached the bottom of the stairs, Sam was there waiting. He knew his protests would fall on deaf ears so he did the best thing he could….

“Try not to get into trouble, you two. And get back here as soon as you can if you suspect anything. Don’t take any unnecessary chances. And for the love of Pete, don’t get yourself tangled up with any of the daughters to any of the Parish councilmen…..I had enough trouble LAST time you did that.”

Torri glanced at Sionn then smiled down at Sam.

”We’ll do our best, Sam. Promise.”

PostSubject: Re: Ch 2: When in Rome... or New Orleans   Thu Apr 05, 2012 7:05 pm

Sionn opened the door for his sister and the two of them stepped out into the hot, moist air of New Orleans. Inhaling deeply Sionn began walking the one block towards Bourbon Street. Torri kept in stride with him and as they made their way through the noise and the crowd the quarter was bursting with activity. Torri would see it on his face, Sionn was coming back to life. Being in crowds, with people, socializing and drinking, this was what her brother lived for. It was sometimes passed around when he wasn’t there if Sionn would even follow the path of the Stormborn if he was given the chance to just disappear into some large crowd and drink and whore his life away. However there was the other side of the coin, when push came to shove Sionn was one of the most gifted Stormborn to walk the planet, and when he was in action he was a symphony of destruction and protection.

Sionn stopped which caused Torri to step pass him before recovering and turning to look. He was gazing into a novelty shop and pointed, “What’cha think sis, should I bring back a piece of American fashion to wear around back ‘ome?”

He was pointing to a tie rack. As Torri followed the line of sight from his finger he was pointing at a neck tie that was shaped like a giant penis, the head on the wide bottom end. She punched him in the arm and furrowed her brows as she immediately stepped away and he turned with a laugh as he caught back up with her, “Wha’? I was thinking one for me and one for Da’!”

She turned and looked at him with a stare that would melt ice and he laughed, “Well ya got ta admit, it’s a wee bit classier than going to see that!” He stopped and pointed to a wall covered with posters of live sex shows and Torri reared back with her fist about to near punch his lights out when from across the street a half a dozen college aged men began cat calling to her. Sionn turned and looked as the six drunken lads came across the street, full of false courage and sass, “Hey there pretty lady, I love me some natural redhead.”

Sionn looked as the six began to maneuver and position themselves to get between himself and Torri. He stepped right back in and looked at the one talking, “Sionn McGhee, pleasure to meet ya lad!”

The kid stepped back slightly and laughed, “Oh, sorry, is this YOUR girl?” The other five laughed and Sionn laughed with them, “Oh heaven’s no lad, she’s ma’ sister, and it would just be wrong if she was filling both roles now wouldn’cha say?”

One of the other lads piped in and spoke, “Great, if she’s your sister how about making yourself scarce.” Sionn turned with a smile and spoke, “Oh I’m afraid I couldn’t do that lad, I’m afraid that would be dangerous.” The fellow laughed and looked at Sionn, “Aww come on bro, we promise not to hurt her.” Sionn looked at the lad and spoke in a serious tone, “It’s not ma’ sister I’m worried about friend.”

He looked at Sionn and after a moment of awkward silence he laughed, followed by the whole lot. He was about to speak again and Sionn interrupted, “I tell you what I’m gon’ ta propose. My sis and I are here on holiday, taking in the culture, learning about yer country. How about in a show of friendship and alliance between our countries you let my sister and I to our evening and in return I will buy all your lads drinks this evening?”

The fellow raised his eyebrows and in a flash Sionn was holding up $300 dollars, “You are all clearly half pissed to the wind as it is so my guess is this should be enough to finish out yer night, do we have an accord?”

One of the lads smacked Sionn on the shoulder and grabbed the money, “HELL’S YEAH we have a deal bro!”

The six of them turned and wobbled away as Sionn turned to Torri with a smile. She would see the Sionn she always knew and loved, the Sionn that could defuse and distract with charisma and charm and he spoke, “I know I know, you’d a much rather grabbed their bollocks and put them on display, better to make potential allies than definite enemies as Da’ always says.”

The tie was pure Sionn through and through. The punch was just for the fun of it….and to vent some frustration. But Torri did take mental note of the shop and location so she could return and get it for him as a gag gift for his birthday.

When he pointed to the peep show palace across the street, she was about to turn and walk away from him when the college boys started their caterwauling. Instantly Torri’s body gre tense as they decided to approach and she was ready for an all out throw down when they separated her from Sionn and tried to surround her. As Sionn stepped back in and began doing one of the things he did best, talk, Torri glared at the six drunks as her hands curled into tight fists and she instinctively put her back to Sionn’s.

As Sionn became the diplomat he could be using the gifts he had been naturally given, Torri kept a close eye on the men. As the tension built then slowly ebbed away as Sionn worked his magic with words, Torri let out a small sigh of relief and looked over at Sionn and couldn’t help but smile at him.

”Aye…..besides, it would a been a bad idea to bring any kind of attention to us right now. An’ with all the blokes in uniform around here…..I dun think it would be easy for us to get away so quick like.”

Torri’s eyes looked past Sionn and nodded ever so slightly so he could see the police walking the beat and riding horses then looked to her left so he could see there were even more down that way. When she looked back at him and raised both brows he laughed and shook his head.

Chuckling slightly, she thumbed over her shoulder.

”Now….how ‘bout you lead me to where it is ye are wantin’ t’go, brother? I know you want to blow off some steam but I also know there was more to the story than just needing a drink and a woman.”

Sionn noted the men in uniform and nodded softly in understanding, “You’ve always liked those men in uniform.” He winked slyly and Torri furrowed her brow but couldn’t help cracking a small smile, “Com’on T.”

He slipped his arm lovingly under her own and escorted her to the boardwalk along the Mississippi River. He walked up to one of the vendor carts and spoke to the gentlemen operating it, “Two fried catfish plates and two waters please.” The older gentlemen who’s face was etched with lines of wisdom glanced at Sionn and then over to Torri with a smile. He reached over and removed two bottles of water from the ice chest and handed them to Sionn, “Here you go, catfish will be up in a minute.”

There was something in the way the old African American gentleman was looking at Sionn and Torri that didn’t seem normal. There was incredible kindness in his eyes and a warmth to his face which could not be overlooked. Even as Sionn walked over and followed Torri’s gaze back to the man it was present in the way he interacted with other people ordering. Sionn looked at Torri and handed her the water, she looked at it with curiosity and before she could ask he spoke, “The drinking story was just to keep Sam grumpy, we have too big a day tomorrow to be hung over.”

The man working the cart looked up at Sionn and lifted a hand into the air calling him over. Sionn handed his bottle of water to Torri and headed over to get the fish. As he reached the man working the cart spoke, “Keep yer eyes open at all times son, they are everywhere.” He handed Sionn the fish and he was about to respond but the old gentleman shoed Sionn of and he headed back over to Torri. He was about to say something but could tell by the look on her face she had heard him say it too and he spoke, “Something tells me ther’s a little more to the fella’ workin’ the cart than meets the eye.”

Torri took in the sites around her. For as much as this city was dangerous and held many unsavory secrets, it held a beauty and mystique to it one could not deny wanting to find more about. And Torri was no exception. She may be more cautious than the average tourist but she wasn’t completely immune. The air, the sounds, the sites, the smells….it all worked on a soul and Torri knew this was an easy place to lose yourself to.

As Sionn ordered their food, Torri paid very close attention to the man and even when Sionn returned with the water, she was watching him. She could almost sense there was something about him but nothing threatening. When she finally looked down at the water, she glanced over at Sionn and couldn’t help but chuckle when she heard his explanation.

”Well…’spose we’ll have to get our story straight when we get back to Sam’s.”

As Sionn retrieved their food and the old man gave Sionn a warning, Torri couldn’t help but glance around to see if there was an immediate threat. When Sionn returned and handed her the food, Torri looked at her brother and nodded, giving a small smile.

”Aye….it shows in the way he interacts with the others around him….not to mention he’s got us figured out. ‘Course I guess it isn’t too hard to figure us out if you know what to look for.”

Torri glanced at the old man again and when he looked at her and Sionn, she held up the food to him and nodded as she took a bite. When she saw the smile and nod in return, she looked over at Sionn and smiled as she chewed.

”So what’s on your mind, brother? Please tell me you brought me out here for more than a fried fish meal.”

Erich and Annette McGhee had gotten to know Rhain a little more as he worked with them on the farm. So much so that the young man had started taking dinner in the house with them and leaving after the meal was done and some good hearted conversation had been shared. So when the day came that Erich and Annette received some news that couldn’t possibly trust to send other than personal messenger to their children in the States, there was only one logical choice.

“Rhain, lad….come on in here. We need to talk to you.”

Erich saw the look of trepidation on the young mans face and smiled, clapping him on the shoulder.

”No worries, Lad…no worries. It’s all good.”

Erich escorted Rhain into his study and was joined by Annette. Ericj leaned back against his desk and propped one leg onto the top while Annette sat next to the young man in the chair. Erich looked over at Annette and smiled. Annette patted Rhain’s hand.

”As you know, our children are in the States right now. They’re on a holiday, of sorts, but they are doing some research as well. With that being said, we need you to carry a message to them for us. It’s too sensitive to trust any modern form of communication. And we would feel much better if it was delivered to them in person by someone we trust.”

Erich smiled.

”That’s where you come in lad. If you agree, we’ve already secured you a flight to the states that leaves in the next three hours. And all you need to do is deliver this envelope to Sionn and Torri when you arrive. If not, we completely understand and no hard feelings. You will continue to stay here and work the farm just as you are now.”

Annette looked over at the young man again and smiled warmly.

”We’ll give you some time to think about it, lad, but we will need an answer within the hour in order to make sure you get to the airport in time to catch your flight. If you do, you will be flying non stop to New Orleans.”

Annette stood and walked over to stand next to Erich as they both looked down on Rhain, smiling.

”There’s fresh baked brownies in the kitchen and some tea on the stove. When your ready, we’ll be waiting there for you.”

Rhain didn't quite know how to respond to that. Cities had always been something he'd thought to avoid, but going overseas? The thought had never even crossed his mind. He had been well educated in surviving in the woods of Scotland, but almost nothing about any other places. Did they even speak the same language over there? Several moments passed in which Rhain just gaped at his employers with a dumb expression.

"I ehm . . . " he began, "that's quite a lot of trust to put in me," he said finally, his eyes shifting from Erich to Annette and back, "are ya sure ya want to trust me with this . . . mission?" The two affirmed that there wasn't a doubt in either of their minds and Rhain found himself dumbfounded again. His mind spun with logic and fear, entwining the two. Surely no one would find him if he went overseas, but then there was always that faint hope in the back of his mind that he may find his parents again, if they were out there. "Would I be able to come back?" asked the young man. The couple laughed a little at the simple question and assured him that it was temporary. Another long pause and Rhain felt his mouth go dry. The thought of tea and brownies sounded like an excellent brain food, so he excused himself as politely as always and headed into the kitchen. Dipping a brownie in his tea, a peculiar habit he'd picked up as a child, he chewed silently, barely tasting it as his mind fell into deep thought. The couple had been wonderful to him, paid him, put him up in nicer accommodations than any other, and were both kind and perceptive enough to have turned away some suspicious visitors who had begun asking a few too many questions about him one day. They hadn't even noticed Rhain was listening, but that day had shown him he could truly rely on them, should he fall into danger.

Now something settled in the pit of his stomach, a kind of dense fear with a light dusting of guilt. They'd looked out for him in ways they didn't even realize. Surely, he could go the full length of his abilities to help them... if only it didn't involve a city...

Swallowing a too-big clump of tea-soaked brownie, Rhain trudged back into the study, a cup of tea still steaming in his hand. By the end of the short walk, his mind had already begun to replace fear with curiosity and he was wearing a willing smile.

"Aye," he said, "I'll help ya then."

Erich and Annette made sure they gave the young man his privacy while he contemplated his decision. They were both in hopes he would do this huge favor for them but ultimately, it was his decision. Of course there was a method to their madness but it was information shared between them.

They were talking quietly when the young man returned and affirmed his decision to go to the states and both of them smiled brightly at his answer. Erich stepped forward and clapped the young man on the shoulder again.

”Excellent, lad. We’ll drive you to the airport. I’ve got your passport all ready to go. I’ve also got some other information for you to use when you get to New Orleans and some traveling money in Yankee currency.”

He handed the young man an envelope and when Rhain opened it up he would see it contained his passport, (complete with his photograph along with his name) as well as a paper with names and address for Rhain to tell the taxi driver and the cash he mentioned. Quite a bit of it, actually. It seemed as though they knew he wouldn’t turn them down. How was that possible. Annette handed him the envelope that was sealed with the family house crest and smiled.

”Give this to Sionn or Torri. No doubt when you find the one you will find the other. They are staying at our friend Sam’s place. They will know we sent you, Good luck, Rhain. And enjoy the sites. And don’t let Torri give you any grief. She can be a bit….headstrong at times.”

Erich nodded.

”Go ahead and pack and we’ll meet you in the garage.”

When the young man turned and walked away, Erich waited for the sound of the door closing before he looked at Annette. He could see the look on her face and knew what she was thinking.

”It’s all right. We’re doing the right thing. He’ll be safe with the kids over there. When they all come back, we’ll have this whole mess cleaned up and he won’t have to worry about looking over his shoulder ever again. After all, he’s done it plenty long enough now as it is.”

Annette nodded.

”I know….I just hope we aren’t sending him into anything too dangerous. From what Sionn, Torri and Sam have reported, things are rather tense over there right now.”

Erich nodded in agreement.

”Aye….I know….but if anyone can help him and take care of business over there, it’s Sionn and Torri.”

A little while later Erich and Annette were walking Rhain to the gate at the airport. The flight to New Orleans was boarding and the passengers were standing in line patiently waiting for their turn. Annette glanced at the line then looked up at Rhain. She smiled then stepped forward and hugged him tenderly then stepped back.

”Take care of yourself, Rhain. Don’t let some pretty Yank girl steal your heart. The kids will be glad to see someone from their home, no doubt. We’ll see you when you get back and I’ll make sure your room is kept ready for you.”

Erich stepped forward then and shook the young man’s hand.

”You’ll know the kids as soon as you see them. They will most likely stand out in a crowd. Things are going to be very different over there and you’ll see some things you never have seen before. Don’t let that taint your thoughts about the States. There’s much more good than bad over there. You just have to look at it with your eyes wide open to see it sometimes.”

The flight attendant was waiting for them to say their good byes when she finally cleared her throat softly.

”Last call to board flight 505 to New Orleans.”

Both Erich and Annette stood back and nodded as they watched the young man hand the attendant his boarding pass then walk through the tunnel to board the plane.

There was a strange feeling in Rhain as he left the couple and walked down the long, gray tunnel to the enormous object outside. It had been a while since he'd felt anything upon leaving someone, perhaps it was the name they'd put on his passport. He looked at it again and smirked. He hadn't provided his own last name in the time that he'd been with them, so they had just put their own last name. As he entered the plane, the stewardess smiled at him and directed him to his seat where he sat with his bag in his lap, looking around. It was clear he already didn't fit in and people were noticing: Eyeing the scar on his cheek and his very handmade looking clothes. He seemed to become less conspicuous as everyone settled in, but there was still very little that was comfortable to Rhain about being around the same large group of people for . . . how long was it again?

Long. The flight was long. And Rhain's body didn't seem to know how to handle it. By the time they began to drop altitude and the pilot's voice came from wherever to tell them all that they would be landing soon, he wasn't sure if he had slept, should have slept, should have eaten, been hungry, or whether or not his legs still worked. By the time the enormous vehicle bumped to the ground, Rhain looked downright disconcerted. He jumped when the plane hit and didn't know whether to look around himself or look out the window. The older woman sitting beside him smiled sympathetically and patted his knee.

"See? Not a bad first flight, now was it?" She sounded different than he did, more proper and less broad highland, like Annette and Erich. Rhain looked over and managed to give her a tired smile in return.

"Aye... I suppose..." he replied.

When he stood up, his legs felt like jelly but he managed to walk out, clutching his bag and glancing at the instructions his employers had given him. When he stepped out of the gate, however, all he could do was pause. There were people. Lots of them. Everywhere. Rhain took a deep breath and told himself this was just another adventure, like climbing the very high cliffs or taking a dive into a quarry... but so many people. With his bag on his back and his hands full of paper and envelopes, Rhain cautiously approached a woman in uniform and asked where he could find a taxi. She gave him instructions in a language that made his eyebrows raise.

"I . . . I'm sorry?" he replied. The woman repeated herself, or at least it sounded the same. She could apparently understand him just fine, but Rhain spent the entire time she was talking trying to figure out if that was English. "I need a taxi," he said again, "a car... to take me somewhere. Where can I find one?" Now the woman looked at him somewhat irritated and confused, pointing and gesticulating more now as she repeated the garbled syllables, only louder this time. When she looked at him in an unwelcoming way, Rhain just muttered a thank you and walked in the direction she had pointed. Luckily, the airport had signs which were in English so he just followed those and managed to find the iconic yellow cars. The driver in one signaled him from the wrong side of the car and Rhain slid in the back, glancing between him and the misplaced passenger seat for a moment before handing him the address they had given him.

"I... uh... I need to go here please," he told the driver. The driver surveyed him for a moment, giving him a once-over before taking the address wordlessly and taking off down the road. Rhain's eyes went wide as saucers. He gripped the seats and fiddled with the seatbelt for a moment before strapping himself in and saying a little silent prayer to the spirits of the forest to help him survive this. This man did not drive like Annette and Erich. This man drove like a complete lunatic. Rhain didn't drive, but he'd seen many people do it and was pretty sure this was not the right way. At least everyone was driving on the wrong side of the road, not just him. Looking out the windows, Rhain saw nothing but buildings and concrete, crowds, stores, restaurants. Everything was black and gray and there were very few trees. He took a deep breath again and gripped the pocket in his bag where he had stored some light in his crystals just in case.

By some miracle, they arrived and Rhain paid as his employers had explained to him before slipping out of the car and double-checking the address. There was absolutely no land around these houses at all, just concrete and more houses. Still, Rhain slowly climbed the steps and tentatively knocked on the door, waiting until he was sure he had the right person to take the message out of his bag.

The door swung open almost violently and Rhain had to look down at the man who had opened the door. What he saw was a grumpy, bushy browed man with a scowl on his features.

”Yeah? Can I help you, lad?”

The young man at the door didn’t say anything for a moment and Sam spoke again.

”Do you understand English?”

Sam was about to close the door when the young man handed him an envelope and Sam quirked a brow and studied the writing. Turning it over he saw the crest for House Helleborine had sealed the thing. He looked back up at the young man then stepped aside and gestured for Rhain to come inside. He spoke in Gaelic as he did.

”Come in Lad. I’ll call the two down you’re looking for.”

As Sam shut the door he glanced around suspiciously outside. Once the door was closed he walked over to the counter and pressed a button. The secure shutters rumbled into place as Sam yelled for Sionn and Torri.

”WAKE UP SLEEPIN’ BEAUTIES! WE GOT A GUEST!”

Sionn heard the shutters close, they always had a distinct sound when you were in the rooms upstairs. He heard Sam's voice and groaned softly knowing that the second he hit the floor the 4 hurricane's he drank last night were going to pound a good morning into his skull.

Sure enough he felt himself sway slightly as his body tried to reacquaint itself with soberness. Sam yelled agian and Sionn whispered, "Bloody hell..."

He walked downstairs and saw that Torri wasn't their yet, a small badge of honor he managed to mentally pin to his chest, he knew if four hurricane's were hitting his this hard they were certainly doing worse to Torri. Through a painful glance Sionn looked at Sam and then the stranger, then back to Sam, "What is it wee man?"

Sam looked at him gruffly and spoke, "Maybe I'll just wait for Torri."

Torri was jolted awake by the sounds of the shudders falling into place over the windows. She groaned and placed the pillow over her head then heard Sam’s voice yelling through the muffled mess. Damn Sionn for convincing her she COULD drink four hurricanes last night. Four….FOUR. And then dragging her sorry self home in the wee hours just before dawn. Even Taeryn had quirked a brow when they arrived back at the B&B.

When she heard Sam bellow again, she half growled half whimpered and angrily shoved the covers off her body. Slinging the pillow aside, she rolled out of bed, stood up, swayed terribly and steadied herself with a hand on the dresser. After a few moments, she felt herself grow steady and she flung open her door and stomped the first few steps down the stairs.

When the stomping only added to her bad head, she ceased that particular show of annoyance and walked up beside Sionn. Her hair was a mess, she was rather bleary eyed and she was wearing her tank top and sleep shorts. Scowling more than Sam, she glanced at the little man then to the stranger and looked back at Sam.

”What?”

Sam furrowed his brow even more and stuck the envelope out to Sionn. The little man glared at Torri.

”I told you to mind yourself around your brother, lass. Now lookat you. This is no way to greet a young man, let alone a young man sent by your folks.”

Torri tried to focus in on Rhain but her bleary eyes were useless. She felt her stomach lurch and without an axcuse, she took off down the hallway, slamming the door to the bathroom behind her. Obviously Torri had more important things she needed to take care of this morning. Like not throwing up on her host or the guest.

Rhain couldn't help but smirk at the sorry performance by these two who were apparently the children of his ever-so-classy employers. Still, he felt relieved, even comfortable, to be in the presence of fellow Scotsmen.

"Aye, thank God!" he cried, "people who finally speak English! I swear, I didnae what these Yanks speak, but it's nothin' I ever heard." He managed to stay polite until the girl snapped angrily at them, swaying on the spot, before making a beeline to the bathroom. Then, he had to laugh. "I guess yer havin' an interesting holiday, eh?

Sionn looked at the letter and took it from Sam as the grumpy old Dwarf leaned his back against the counter. He broke the seal and read it before handing it to Torri. He stayed silent as Torri read it and when she finished and looked up at them Sionn spoke, “So it seems mum and pa trust him, no reason for us not to aye?”

He turned to look at Sam who huffed with a half-smile and then back to Rhaine, “I apologize for our appearance mate, someone had to show T here a good time.” He laughed as he stepped back expecting to dodge T’s fist but only got a dirty look before turning to Sam again, “Do you have what I needed you to get me stumpy?”

“Lad if I was younger…,”

“Aye but yer not so…,”

Sam placed a punch to Sionn’s mid section that folded the young Scotsman in half and he came to one knee, Sam laughed as he walked over and lifted Sionn’s face by placing a finger under his chin and moving his face up, “Now you earned that one lad,” Sionn laughed as he nodded and spoke, “Aye perhaps I did.”

Sam looked at Sionn with a pleasant smile and spoke, “Of course I have what you were after.”

Sionn nodded in approval and stood wearily back to his feet as he spoke, “Good… good. Can you do me a favor? Give it to T, I need to go scream at George in the big white phone.”

Sam laughed out loud and nodded in approval as he turned to Torri who was stifling her laughter at Sionn’s pain, “Here ya are lass, see to it that big mouth there gets a look at it when he’s done purgin’ ‘imself aye?”

Torri recovered from her trip to the bathroom and when she came back to join the men, she has splashed some cold water on her face and ran her fingers through her red hair. She stood next to Sionn as the letter was given to her and she read the contents. Obviously if their folks sent the young man to them, there was a good reason. A damn good reason.

As Sam and Sionn discussed about something Sionn was looking for, and Sionn ended up on the business end of Sam’s fist, Torri tried not to let her laugh go but she was failing miserably. As Sionn mentioned about visiting the bathroom, Torri looked at Rhain then gestured with her head towards the kitchen, where Sam was headed.,

”C’mon. Sam may be small but what he lacks in height he makes up for in cooking. And he makes a good pot of java.”

Aurora had slept fitfully, tossing and turning with dreams of a time long ago and a man she did not know. She knew of his name, Ghengis Khan but not the man nor why she was dreaming of him. She woke many times during the night, Beau constantly there for her. Finally, she heard Sam's holler and rubbed her tired eyes. She looked to Eryn who was biting at her tethers, wanting to fly and hunt and Rory smiled at her. "Okay, little sister.....I will set you free so that you may hunt." She untied the great bird and opened up the window to watch her fly off, circling the house three times before disappearing.

Looking down at Beau, she ruffled the fur between his ears and sighed, "I guess we'd better see what's going on. Let me get changed, freshen up a bit and we'll go down." Beau nuzzled her hand, whining his amber eyes looking up into hers. "You need to visit the outside as well, don't you?" At his soft 'woof' she grinned. "Okay, my freshening up can wait I suppose. Go to Sam, I think he's wise enough to figure out what you need." She opened the bedroom door and chuckled as the great timber wolf bounded down the stairs. Grabbing her clean jeans, dark purple tank top and her boots, she hurried to the bathroom where she showered quickly and brushed her teeth, brushing out her shiny dark hair until it shined from the washing and the brushing. She wore no make-up more because she wasn't fond of it than anything.

Within 15 minutes, she was showered and dressed and heading downstairs. She entered the room just in time to see Sam punch Sionn in his stomach and she gasped. Beau chose at that moment to enter as well and much to Aurora's amazement, he promptly placed himself in between Sam and Sionn, baring his teeth at the much shorter man.

Sam eyed the wolf and looked up to see Aurora descending the stairs. He grouched about critters about his place but took the time to open the protective shutters from the windows and such then opened the back door for the animal to go outside and do what nature intended him to do. As he walked towards the kitchen, he talked over his shoulder.

”Well, I spose I should be getting some food on for you youngsters to devour. And no, I’m not gonna poach anything for anyone so if pretty boy Brit over there wants that, he’ll have to do it hiself.”

Torri looked to Taeryn and gave him a small grin. The handsome Brit furrowed his brow and was about to say something but decided better of it. Torri looked at Aurora and nodded towards the kitchen.

”C’mon….Aurora, this is Rhain. Me mum and da sent him to us with a message he delivered in person.”

Pouring herself a cup of tea, Torri prepared it with some honey and lemon then walked to the door and let the wolf back in. She watched the animal and woman and could not deny they certainly had a connection. Walking across the kitchen, she announced she was going to take a shower and be back down in a few minutes.

And sure enough, she was. About 30 minutes later, Torri was showered and a bit more bright eyed. It was clear her head was still giving her some pain but at least it wasn’t as bad as it was when she first woke up. The breakfast Sam cooked was just being set on the table and she grinned again.

”Sam, you missed your calling in life.”

Sam huffed.

”Like hell I dd, lass. I’m only doing this so you don’t waste away to nothin’.”

Torri looked over a Rhain then.

”So, Rhain….what’s your story? I mean, obviously our folks trust ye enough to send ye over the pond with news, but….how did ye meet ‘em and stuff?”

Sionn returned in a short while cleaned up and looking a little more appropriate. He walked over to Sam and spoke, "No hard feelings Aye?"

Sam laughed and shook his head, "There never are lad, because I always win."

Sionn smiled and grabbed a plate of eggs, "Aye, that ya always do."

As he sat he looked at Torri who was asking the leading questions he was also thinking, who was this fellow and why had their parents sent him to them.

He then turned and looked over at Aurora with a smile, "How'd ya sleep lass?"

Rhain had immediately turned to the wolf as it came trotting back into the kitchen. When the attention turned to him, he was caught making a very low, barely audible sound deep within his throat and holding his hand out while the wolf gave it a thorough licking. He looked up, caught a little off-guard when they addressed him but turned and began nibbling at his eggs. At Torri's question, he swallowed and offered his tale.

"I've been workin fer 'em," he replied, "helpin 'round the yard and carin' for their beasties. Then I figgered I'd help 'em out with this job too since they've been taking such good care of me."

He turned back to the wolf as it nudged him with its nose and he gave it a pat.

"I don't suppose it's any of my business," Rhain went on, "so don't answer if it isn't... but I have been very curious what I just delivered. If I'm allowed to know, that is." He didn't want to disrespect or betray his employers' trust in any way, but the letter had been eating at him since they placed it in his hand. He had no doubt that it had nothing at all to do with him, but Rhain was a naturally curious lad.

Then it dawned on him where he was and he looked down at the wolf, this time a little more quizzically. "So am I to understand there's actually a bit of earth in this land of concrete and crowds?"

When Rhain asked what was in the letter, she glanced at Sionn and shared a knowing look. Obviously the young man had no idea why he was actually sent their way and if their folks hadn’t divulged to the young man what the letter contained, then they weren’t going to let him know just yet either.

Glancing at Sam for a quick second before looking over at Rhain and studied the young man as he and the wolf exchanged greetings. Quirking a brow, she watched the way the wolf nuzzled his hand then glanced at Aurora who was just as surprised as the rest of them. When Rhain looked back at her she shrugged her shoulders slightly.

”It was instructions for us to do some research here. Sensitive information mum and da couldn’t trust to conventional means of communication and felt safe for you to deliver it to us in person. Not to mention they thought it would do ye some good to get out and see some places of the world before you go back home. We promise not introduce you to anyone who will steal your heart away, lad. That‘s all Sionn‘s job.”

When the young man asked he next question, she chuckled and Sionn laughed at his description of New Orleans.

They finished breakfast and Sionn leaned back looking at Rhaine and Torri. One advantage to being Stormborn (or any of the other advanced races of this planet) was that things flushed from you system much faster, including pain. He was now looking much more like himself, as was Torri. He picked at his teeth with a toothpick and spoke to Rhaine, "So here's the deal lad, The Poe's attacked us last week while Mum and Da where at a gathering of the clans. All twelve leaders had a gathering of the minds so to speak and conveniently while they were gone a crazy Druid attacked us and stole something from our Da's book of relics."

He leaned forward and glanced at Torri who nodded slightly in approval of giving all the information, "It was the operating instructions to the Black Horn. Now I am not sure if you know what the Black Horn is but let's just say that four of the top five most horrific 'natural' disasters in Earth's history were a result of the Black Horn. Our Father is the Lorekeeper and he has been trying to decipher how the bloody things works, but despite his best efforts the secret eludes him. My suspicion is the Poe's wanted to take a wee crack at it themselves, but they didn't have permission so they liberated the item for their own purposes."

He leaned back as he flicked the toothpick into the trashcan, "We know it was the Poe's, that much is not in doubt. The Black Horn hasn't been seen for hundreds of years, but there is suspicion that the Poe's have it, or are at least after it. The short of it is, we are here to figure it out. It seems that Mum and Da felt you would be a welcome addition to the expedition, which of course, you are, however I must warn you that we have no idea what we are walking into, this whole situation could go to shite in a matter of seconds, especially if those nutty Druids don't want us snooping around... but snoop around is exactly what we plan on doing."

He reached forward and took his tea, sipping it and then setting them empty cup back on the table, "So the real question becomes lad, do you want to go with us? This is an all volunteer army, you aren't obligated, so the choice is really up to you."

Aurora smiled at Sionn, "Yes, thank you....I slept okay I suppose." She was still confused about her dreams and for now was keeping them to herself, but her dark, expressive eyes showed that she slept less than okay. When Beau came back into the kitchen from going outside to relieve himself she gasped when he went straight to Rhain and licked his hand. Never in her life had he taken so quickly to a stranger before and she cast Rhain a quizzical look. Still, she sat down, thanking Sam for the breakfast as she began to eat, smiling again at Sam when he produced a plate with some raw meat on it for Beau setting it down before the timber wolf on the floor. As Beau ate, Aurora heard the cry of Eryn, the Golden Eagle as she landed on a branch in a tree outside the kitchen window. She saw Sam head towards the window, grumbling about wolves and birds when she stopped him, "It's okay, Sam. She's just letting me know that she's finished her hunt and has returned. She doesn't need to come inside so long as she knows where I am."

When Sionn started speaking about the Black Horn, she not only felt his Scottish burr roll over her skin making her shiver, but she also noticed that he'd not mentioned Hiawatha's Bow. She mentally shrugged her shoulders, thinking that he must have his reasons for doing so and trusted him enough to not question him on it. As she finished her breakfast, she smiled again at Sam, "Thank you, Sam.....that was a really good breakfast."

Rhain was speechless for a moment after Sam spoke. Suddenly things were drifting into his life again for the first time since he was sent out on his own. He wondered: How much did they know? How much had his employers known? He felt dumb, naive, and now just downright confused. He glanced around at the expectant faces before him and idly fiddled with his handmade clothing which had gotten him more than his fair share of stares already in this incredibly long day.

There was another pause when he opened his mouth to reply. Should he admit that he knew exactly who the Poes were? At that point, he may as well announce his Elar'uma blood, but then by their very definition, he couldn't even consider himself that. He wasn't sure what he was exactly, other than something that shouldn't exist. But then, this wasn't about him . . . was it? He took a hard look at the two red-headed siblings, their relation to the McGhees was obvious.

"Forgive me," he began, "but I was sort of functionin' under the idea that the people who sent me here were just rich people livin' in a small town... nothin' more. I see I was a wee bit off on that notion, eh?" He gave them another hard look. "You're Fara aren't ya? You and your folks." His heart picked up and he looked at the other man now. His head was spinning and he didn't know what to think between trying to figure out if he was in danger or had been betrayed or used and the mingled feelings that came from the kindness his employers had shown him. "Can I know what's in that letter?" he asked, "before I agree ta anythin', I'm just wonderin', what's it say about me? And why is everyone trusting me with stuff like this and recruitin' me to go against these Poes?"

It was beginning to feel like eons ago that he was just a wanderer in the forest, living carefree, his only worry to get by. Generally, he shoudn't exist, and so the Elar'uma a more than happy to allow him to "not exist." Of course then there were those visitors...

Something was brewing, and Rhain found himself mentally kicking himself for not seeing it. His parents had taught him better than that: Vigilance. But he hadn't failed them yet. Still, now there was something he really needed to get to the bottom of.

Torri sat and watched everyone as the Sionn talked to Rhain. She saw the strange look on Aurora’s face when Sionn mentioned the Black Horn and she saw how Rhain was absorbing everything. She also saw a look of near panic in the lads eyes. When he finally spoke, Torri knew he was aware they weren’t ‘normal’ people he was dealing with anymore. She glanced at Sionn and debated, mentally, for a moment on rather or not to tell Rhain everything but in all honesty, he deserved nothing but. Finally she dabbed her lips and cleared her throat softly.

”Aye. We be Fara. Sam there be a Punkie. And Aurora here be a Elar’uma. And you….from what our folks can tell….are Elar’uma as well. Well…..at least Elar’uma be in your veins. You see, Rhain, our folks are very observant and with Da being Lorekeeper, it was a matter of time before they were able to put some pieces of an old puzzle together. While they aren’t one hundred percent certain of who you are, it became more obvious when strangers started showing up and asking question about ye. They thought it would be safer to send you here and at the same time, see if you are who they think you are. And the only way to know for certain was to give you the chance to put your talents to use. Real use.”

She looked over at Sam and saw the slight nod from him then looked back at Rhain and continued.

”As far as the world is concerned your last name is McGhee. It will only change if you decide to take your sir name that is rightfully yours. Until then, none of the Morghan’s will know where you are or who you are. that bit of information stays with us here.”

She thumbed behind her to indicate Taeryn, who was once more burying his nose in his computer in the other room.

”Even the high falootin’ Brit in there will keep your secret.”

She was rewarded with Taeryn yelling back something about it was the blabbering Scots everyone had to be wary of. Torri chuckled softly then grew serious again.

”The choice is all yers, Rhain, but if you have half the talent our folks think you do, then you would be a huge asset to all of us sittin’ at this table…and countless others who aren’t. What say ye?”
