Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations BranchBanner
Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations OlwaBanner

Olwa, Branch and Pela approached Sithelnost. From the short distance they had to cross Olwa scanned the area. The city was set under a very thick canopy, even thicker than that of Silvanost. The river which came in towards Sithelnost was intentionally split so half circumvented the ornate walls of large city and the other fork cut through the heart of the city before spilling out from an elevated cliff face through an ornate waterway which looked like it had taken hundreds of years to design and construct. The water fell downwards over one hundred feet and exploded in a loud mist before being redirected to meet back up with the main branch of the river where all the commerce boats were being loaded and unloaded. The waterway was nothing more than a form of artwork and beauty, it had no function besides bringing an exquisite visual appearance to the city proper. This set the tone for the city which was tranquil and peaceful even from this vantage point and with each step it became all the more so.

Olwa turned to look at Pela and Branch as he stopped at the bridge that crossed the spillway. He spoke loud enough to be heard over the roar of the river but not much louder, “I was very young the last time I was here, it is still Elven territory but these Elves are more accustomed to seeing humans as the border is only half a days horse ride to the North. Pela, you shouldn’t get as many stares.” He could see the relief on her face.

Branch smiled and nodded to Olwa as he spoke and then turned to look at Pela, “Istar'ostring needs her water restored, she is hot yes. Sit here, Branch will retrieve and make it cold again for you.”

She saw Pela began to protest but she placed a strong hand on her shoulder (stronger than her tiny Elven frame seemed to be able to produce) and gently had Pela sit, “Please Mistress, Branch wants to do this for you.” She took the wet rags that were wrapped around Pela’s head and she could feel that they were a touch warm. She smiled and nodded to Olwa before slipping down under the bridge to the waterside. Olwa turned and looked at Pela as he squatted down to get to her eye level, “All Branch knows is serving and giving, she has a good heart.” He could see Pela’s smile of gratitude for all the wild elf had done before he continued, “She sees you as a daughter, like she sees me as a son. I think that is why my mother and father always treated her with such angst. Besides being a wild elf which they see as amazingly inferior I always got along better with her than I did with them, as a result my parents seemed intent on making her life as miserable as possible, but every night when everyone was asleep she would sneak into my room and tuck me in, sing me songs or read to me. Of course she would do it all through missive so my parents wouldn’t hear, but she never let a night pass without seeing me to bed proper.”

He could hear Branch returning from the river and he turned his head to look at her. Branch smiled and nodded to Olwa before kneeling down on her knees in front of Pela and laying the wet rags on her lap. She sprinkled some of the powdered reagents she had prepared the day before and whispered words of magic, the towel began to steam in the warmer atmosphere as it became freezing cold. She took it uncomfortably in her hands and wrapped it around Pela’s neck. She then straightened Pela’s garments to get it tucked neatly beneath her clothing and straightened out the hood that lay down across Pela’s back. She looked up then into Pela’s eyes and spoke, “Istar'ostring will feel better now again. That should last the day and into the night, then it will be cool enough that Istar'ostring will not feel the heat.”

She smiled and rubbed a finger lovingly on Pela’s cheek, “Yes, even now Istar'ostrings cheek is cooling.”

Olwa beamed at Branch, this was the Branch he grew up with, the selfless, sacrificing, caring nurturer who did all she could to make those around her comfortable, even when they mistreated her and abused her. She stood up and looked at the city and then to Olwa, “Master Olwa, it would be safer for us to enter as Branch the servant, Olwa the Master. We are still in Silvanesti lands, we are still subjugated by our cousins in these areas of the forest, we will arouse suspicion if we don’t act as such.”

Olwa hesitated but nodded in agreement. He then turned to Pela and spoke, “Branch is right, and you and I will need to act as friends not as two in a relationship. We will arouse too much suspicion otherwise.” Branch suddenly brightened in the eye and spoke, “Master Olwa, Branch has an idea… if you were her guide, she a representative of the wild ones to the north perhaps? Istar'ostring has the right face, the right look for one of the North, we could tell that tale. It would make sense that you as escort and Ranger would be her guide and would still take one servant with you for the journey out and back to the borderlands. It makes sense.”

Olwa nodded and his face smiled, “Branch, you never cease to amaze me.”

Raju sat with Kellan at Ceridwyn’s side. She inhaled deeply and looked across at Aeolis who was looking on and trying to remain hopeful. She reached and took the medallion of Mishikal off Ceridwyn’s chest and spoke with a shaky, sad voice, “There is nothing the goddess of healing can do, her affliction is not of a physical nature.”

She turned and looked at Tanjee who had a look of agreement on her face. Turning to look at Ceridwyn again she reached and placed her right hand on the Elfess’ clammy forehead. Ceridwyn’s normally pale white skin was grey and seemed void of life, but her breathing remained. Raju was staring at her and searching for words, but nothing came. Finally she looked up at Aeolis and spoke, “I am sorry Aeolis, there is nothing we can do for her.”

She stepped back and turned to look at Nol. His face was stricken with grief. Ceridwyn, the Elf who had proven herself to the Dragons in such a manner as to be given eternal mortal existence lay in a state of death, though her body was still alive. He gently placed his hand on the small of Kellans back, but he said nothing for now.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Pela

Pela knew the warmer weather would prove difficult for her but for some reason, it was proving to be a bit more difficult than usual now. What had changed since the last time she traveled on foot with Bad Rock to make her so susceptible to the warmer climate? Perhaps it was just the exertion of moving at the quicker pace than she normally moved in that was causing it. Yes…that had to be it.

Of course the fact Branch waited on her every chance she got was not an easy thing to get used to either. But Pela had to admit, she was grateful ten times over for the aid the wild elfess was able to give. If it weren’t for the cold towels the elfess prepared and placed on her body, Pela was certain she would be dead by now.

As branch placed the once more cool towels on Pela’s neck and touched her cooling cheek, Pela looked up at her, placed her cool hand over Branch’s and smiled gratefully once more. As she sat listening to Olwa and Branch make the plan for entering the city, Pela was not liking how they were going to have to make Branch the servant once more. She was just getting ready to protest when Branch came up with the brilliant plan of Pela being from the North and Olwa the Ranger guide. It was, in a word, perfect.

With Pela’s knowledge of the North lands and Olwa’s expertise as a ranger was the perfect front they needed to get into the city and get the supplies they needed to make it to Pashin. When both elves looked to Pela, she smiled and nodded.

”I could not agree more with Olwa, Branch. You never cease to amaze me either. Well, I suppose if we are going to do this, we best get going now. The more time we spend out here waiting is less distance we put between us and others.”

There was no need to be specific as they all knew who would be looking for them. Still, as Pela stood up and got ready to move into the city of Sithelnost, Pela paused and glanced back in the direction of Silvanost. A feeling of dread filled her for a moment before Olwa called for her to catch up. Shrugging it off to the fact they left so secretively, Pela quickly joined Olwa and Branch as they walked towards the gates of the city.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Aeolis
Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Healer

Aeolis was in shock. He sat holding Ceri’s chilled, clammy hand even as Raju and Tanjee tried to get the blessing of Mishikal to bring his bride back from whatever had taken hold of her during the ceremony before all hell broke loose. His normally bright eye were dull and dark circles surrounded them. His face wore a sullen expression and his shoulders slumped as though a huge weight were crushing him.

As Tanjee and Raju tried one more time, to no avail, and stood back telling him there was nothing they could do to save his ove or bring her back from the brink of oblivion, he remained statue still for a long time. Finally he lifted his face to those who stood around Ceri and he could see the hopelessness on their faces.

His free hand gripped a fist full of the silken blanket that covered Ceri and he slowly blinked at them letting his gaze settle on each one at a time before looking back at Ceri. His voice quivered as he spoke and it was barely above a whisper.

”Why? What sort of spell has her? There has to be someone that can help her?”

His voice began to grow panicked as he lifted his eyes to look at those around him again.

”She was fine until Piramay showed up. What if I go to the fire mage myself? Surely she can bring Ceri back to me. I cannot just let her go like this! Please! Someone help me! Help her!”

Tanjee couldn’t take her brother’s heartbreak any longer and she cried out as she ran forward and wrapped her arms around her brother holding him tight as tears rolled unchecked down her cheeks.

”I am so sorry, brother….”

Aeolis’ arms came up as thought o hug his sister but he disengaged her arms from his body and slowly moved her back a step to keep her at arms length.

”I d o not need pity. I need someone to make Ceri better. To find a way to release her from this spell. To bring her back to me so we can ma…..”

Aeolis felt his resolve disintegrating and he clamped his mouth shut hard to try and maintain his control over himself.

”So we can have a life together as we planned. I refuse to let her go so easily….I cannot give up on her. Not when I truly believe in my heart she can be saved.”

Even as he spoke the words he knew how unlikely it was Ceri would ever come back from wherever it was she had gone. While she wasn’t dead, she certainly wasn’t with him, and that much he was more than painfully aware of.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations KellanBanner

Kellan felt the lump form in her throat and she was having trouble keeping her emotions in check as she watched the heartbreak play out before her. Even after Raju and Tanjee’s multiple attempts, Ceridwyn simply would not recover from whatever it was that had a hold of her.

When she felt Nol’s hand on the small of her back, she stepped back just enough to feel his heat and as Aeolis begged for help, Kellan felt moisture form in her eyes and no matter how hard she tried to stop it, she was as helpless as Aeolis was.

Finally she could take no more and she glanced up at Nol then quietly excused herself. Suddenly feeling as though she were suffocating, she left the room and searched for the first opening to the outside she could find. She was near a panic when she finally came across a door that led to an outer chamber where a beautiful garden bloomed and fragranced the air with the many beautiful blossoms.

Great, Kellan thought. What a mockery of the way I feel. Seeing a bench close by, she made her way to it and sat down heavily. It was rare she gave into her tears but right now, she had no choice. And she detested herself for it. But she detested Piramay even more for what she did to not only Ceri but Aeolis as well.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations RajuBanner

Nol watched as Kellan left and he could feel her discomfort and sadness. With a glance to Aeolis he stepped forward and spoke, “Aeolis, we have been through much together and you are an Elf of honor. As you know our departure back to the Aisle of Mists was to be today so know our leaving is not out of disrespect for Ceridwyn’s condition.”

Aeolis gave a soft and sad nod of acknowledgement and Nol continued, “I will speak with the Highborne, I will ask on behalf of Ceridwyn and yourself to seek his assistance, on this pledge I promise to follow through. I will send word once I have the Highbornes answer but know that with the ancients meet it is with a timeline most mortals find to be frustratingly slow, especially in a time such is this where you are already strained to the limit.”

He reached forth and placed his hand on Aeolis’ shoulder, “But know that you WILL hear from me as soon as I have something to tell you.” He turned and looked at Raju with a sad expression, “Cousin, will you be ready to depart on schedule?” Raju nodded and spoke softly, “Aye cousin, Tanjee and I have healed all the goddess was willing, which was all, and I will be ready to depart on the hour.”

With a nod He spoke, “Very well, I need to go see if Kellan is alright…,” Raju stepped forward, “No cousin, go speak with Prince Myth’alas. He had wanted a status report on Ceridwyn. I will tend to Kellan.”

Nol hesitated a mere second but then nodded in agreement. He walked over to Ceridwyn and gently touched the back of her hand. It was like touching ash, lifeless and cold. Her breathing was steady and her face looked like it was carved from grey stone. With a small inhalation he spoke in Draconic, none would understand him except Raju, “I will speak to the Highborne lady of Dragons, I will seek his guidance and counsel.

He exited the room as Raju turned to Tanjee, “Thank you again my friend for all you did, the strength of Mishikal is obvious in you.” She reached forth and embraced Tanjee in a firm hug, the kind of hug that comes only when two of trudged through adversity. As she stepped back she turned to Aeolis, “Trust in Nol’s words until you hear otherwise.”

She nodded respectfully as she took one last glance at Ceridwyn and then walked in the direction Kellan had left. It took a small amount of time but when she found her in the garden Raju walked up and sat on the bench beside her. She sat in silence a moment and then finally spoke, “One thousand years ago when the dragons still moved freely on Krynn, during the celebration of high moon, a black robed wizard attempted to use the alignment of the moons and kill a silver dragon who he despised. As you know, we love humanity, in fact our kin say it is our curse to love you the way we do. It’s not even something we can explain, it’s just part of us. During the fight, the female dragon he attacked was badly injured, she was struck with heat spells so powerful she was down to the point of near death and the wizard closed in for the kill. As he circled her, her eyes trailed and watched, she had no more magic in her, she was exhausted, beaten and only the killing blow remained. However she was a fighter, and when he approached to lay the final spell her tail lashed around and struck him with a blow so fierce it split his body in half.”

Raju inhaled as she paused and then continued, “Her name was Mercury. She survived and went on to sit on the council of the Highborne for several hundred years before she left to be with the fathers and mothers. She was a fighter, not in the sense that she could wield incredible power on the battlefield or that she was a warrior of ferocity, but that she never quit, in fact she was always the one who insisted there was another way, another attempt undiscovered… she is the one who gave Ceridwyn part of her heart in the Passage ceremony.”

Kellan turned to look at Raju and Raju smiled as she reached up and brushed away some of the dirt sticking to her wet cheek, “Ceridwyn is a fighter, she is not dead yet, and she won’t go easily.” She looked out into the beautiful garden again and spoke, “Nol has pledged to speak with the Highborne about Ceridwyn’s condition, all hope isn’t lost yet.”

She felt Kellan’s eye upon her and she turned once again to smile at her soon to be sister, “Come sister, we have a long journey ahead and the sooner we leave, the sooner we can assist Ceridwyn.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations NolBanner

Nol approached Prince Myth’alas and Princess Rayann. They were in the Chamber of the Stars, directing in the buttressing of what remained to make it supportive enough o not collapse so repairs could begin. As he looked at the ground where the magma beast had erupted Nol was astounded by the amount of magic that still lingered. Whatever Piramay had done she had done underground and had managed to keep it secret and disguised by using the earth below. This was something they would learn from and do all they could to prevent from happening again.

As he approached Myth and Rayann looked at him with hopeful expressions but all he could offer was an apology, “I am sorry Prince and Princess, Ceridwyn’s condition has not improved. She looked like little more than living stone, barely breathing and ashen in color.”

Rayann began to immediately well up with tears and rested her weary head against Myth’s shoulder as Nol continued, “Raju and Kellan prayed all night, but it is not Mishikal’s unwillingness to heal her that is the problem, something deeper has a hold of her, something even the goddess of healing cannot restore and make right. It is not always a mystery however, and I have pledged to Aeolis that I will speak to the Highborne on his behalf to seek a cure.”

He was about to say more but then he stopped and after a small pause spoke, “I am sorry.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Color_10Ketara was in shock....looking around her in disbelief. How could this happen? How could such devastation happen on such a wonderous day? It didn't make any sense to her and at the same time it brought back painful memories of when her own family was attacked. Gideon kept looking at her, a worried expression in his eyes. Never had seen Tara so forlorn and quiet. It was as if she didn't know what to do.....how to fix this. He wrapped his strong arms around her, guiding her to a quiet spot beneath a canopy of leaves. Setting her down, he pulled her to him, instinctively knowing what was about to happen. And he was right. As they sat there, her shaking began and then the tears. Not tears for her loss, but tears for Tanjee, Aeolis, Ceri and all of the elves who had been hurt and killed.

"How can such evil exist on such a blessed day, Gideon? How can someone be so evil that they destroy something so beautiful?" And yet, she knew the answers to her questions. Her brother had been one of the kindest souls ever and look what happened to him. For the longest time, she sat there in his arms, quietly crying. When she was done, she wiped at her eyes, turning their green depths up to his soft brown ones. "I must go an' look for Tanjee. She be needing me, I am sure."

Gideon gently pushed back a strand of her hair that had fallen into her face, then gently kissed her. "Aye.....come m'lady. I will help you find her."

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Aeolis

Aeolis watched as Nol and Raju departed the room. The dragon’s words echoed in his head but they didn’t sink in. He knew the dragon would do all he could but he also knew Nol was right about the timeline of dragons as opposed to the other creatures on Krynn. One would go mad with frustration waiting for an answer from them….if they didn’t die first.

As the room cleared out to just he and Tanjee with Ceridwyn, he sighed heavily and sat back down taking her cold, lifeless feeling hand in his and run his fingers gently over the back of it. What he wouldn’t give to see her vibrant smile, her dancing eyes and hear her lilting laughter. His resolve crumbled and he wept softly as he bent over pressing his forehead to the back of Ceri’s hand.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Healer

Tanjee hugged Raju and thanked her softly for her praise but she felt as though she had failed all the same because Ceri would not snap out of her affliction. Even though Tanjee knew whatever had a hold of Ceridwyn was not something Mishikal could heal and was more likely magically induced.

As Nol and Raju departed, Tanjee stood like a silent statue and watched her brother. He was always so strong….so reserved when it came to expressing his emotions so openly. But when he finally broke down and started weeping over Ceridwyn, Tanjee dropped to her knees beside him and wept openly sharing in his grief and pain. It was the first time in a long time they had shared such emotion with each other.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations KellanBanner

Kellan listened to the story Raju told her about the silver dragon who gave Ceridwyn part of her heart. She found comfort in knowing the silver dragon that was a part of Ceri was such a fighter. Perhaps whatever had a hold of the Elfess would be broken before it had a chance to take her away. And Kellan knew Ceri was a fighter.

When Raju reached up and wiped the moisture from her face, Kellan smiled softly and nodded.

”I’ve prayed to Paladin so much these past twelve hours I’m certain he’s getting tired of hearing my voice. I know that if there is a way he can help, he will. But I get the feeling there’s nothing he can do. So I merely pray one with the knowledge will step forward and bring Ceridwyn back from the brink. And give her and Aeolis the life they deserve to live together.”

Reaching over and squeezing Raju’s hand, she stood up with her soon to be sister and wiped the evidence of her crying from her face as best she could.

”Let’s find Nol.”

Before she turned to go with Raju, she glanced around the beautiful garden once more.

”It’s incredible how such beauty can still exist when such devastation is just a few hundred yard away.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations RayannRed

Rayann was near exhaustion but she refused to stop as long as the citizens of Silvanost needed her. She knew her magic was taking a toll on her but if she could assist in some small way, she would cast until she could cast no more. She had just helped lift a large piece of debris and wiped the moisture from her brow when she felt a familiar presence. Turning she saw Nol approaching and could see by the look on his handsome face the news was not going to be good.

A large figure seemed to appear beside her from out of nowhere (or so it seemed) and she felt the strong fingers of her husband’s hand close around her now trembling, smaller hand. Glancing up into his eyes, she saw the look he gave her and knew he was thinking along the same lines she was.

As Nol delivered the news, Rayann felt her body suddenly grow even wearier and she leaned against Myth as droplets of saline slid down her dirt stained cheeks. This can’t be happening, she thought. Ceridwyn couldn’t be dying. Even as she heard Nol say he was going to speak to the Highborn, Rayann knew perhaps even the ancient dragon may not be able to help.

Finally pulling herself together, she lifted her eyes to Nol and nodded. Her voice was full of the emotion she felt as she stepped forward and warmly hugged the dragon.

”Thank you…Nol. And Thank Raju for us as well. We know she and Tanjee did all they could do. Have a safe journey to the Myst Isles and keep Kellan safe. And please….tell the Highborn his wise counsel is greatly appreciated.”

She stepped back and allowed Myth to say his farewells. When Nol turned to depart, she looked up at Myth as she blinked back more tears.

”I know what is wrong with Ceri, Amel’amin….and I think there may only be one person who can help us get her back. If that’s even possible. Just before the beast erupted into the Chamber, Kali sent me a missive. She said the one word I thought I would never have to hear again.”

She saw the hardening look in Myth’s eyes and nodded slightly.

”Fifth”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Gideon2

Gideon knew Tara was distraught over what happened as much as anyone was. He stayed with her as much as he could but he had to leave her to help as much as he could with the Chamber of Stars. When things were secure enough that the Elves could fully take over, he sought Tara again.

Making their way through the Palace they almost ran into the Lady of the Stars, quite literally. Her guards quickly went on the defense causing Tara and Gideon to stop short and look at the menacing spears and swords with a bit of trepidation.

”Stand down.”

Slowly the spears and swords were lowered and the guards parted so the Lady could walk forward. She was still dressed in her fine gown from the night before but now it was stained and torn. Her auburn hair was not as perfectly placed upon her head as it was when the ceremony started and it was clear by the fatigue showing on her face she had not rested. Her eyes studied the two humans intently with a hard look before it slowly softened.

”You are tanjee’s friend. Tara, yes? The one who is fond of the children.”

As Tara nodded, she continued as she looked to Gideon.

”And you, Sir Knight. I saw you working in the Chamber of Stars alongside my kin. Your service to my people will not be forgotten. But….why are you here? In this part of the palace?”

As she watched Tara and Gideon glance at each other then back to her she raised a delicate brow over her left eye thinking the worst. It wasn’t until Gideon spoke up it became clear.

Gideon bowed respectfully then stood back up and leveled his eyes on the Lady.

”Beg your pardon, Your Grace, we were merely searching for Tanjee. We meant no disrespect to your, your family or your kin. My Lady Tara wished to give comfort and aid to her friend if it was needed.”

The Lady’s expression softened as Gideon spoke and turned sad as she nodded.

”You would be correct in thinking that. Come. I will take you there myself.”

Gideon started to protest but the Lady held up her hand as she turned on her heel and started down a long corridor.

”You may stay there and blabber about or you may walk with me to where Tanjee is. The choice is yours.”

Gideon quickly silenced his protests and grabbed Tara’s hand and rushed to catch up with the Lady. They walked a good ways down a few more corridors when she finally stopped at a door. There was no sound from the other side and the Lady seemed to hesitate before she slowly, quietly opened the door and stepped inside, holding the door open.

Aeolis sat next to Ceridwyn as she lay, looking like the dead, on the bed. Tanjee sat next to her brother with her hand over his that lay over Ceridwyn’s. Tanjee slowly turned her gaze to look at who had come and she quickly got to her feet and wiped her face.

”Your Grace I….”

Once again the Lady of the Stars held her hand up silenced any words.

”Now is not the time for protocol, Tanjee. I have brought you guests who are most concerned for you.”

Tanjee peered beyond the door and saw Tara and Gideon. Her eyes welled up with tears once more and she rushed forward to embrace her friend.

”I am so glad you are safe. And I am so glad to see you.”

Aeolis sat unmoving as he prayed to any God or Goddess that would hear his prayers and bring his Ceri back to him.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations NolBanner
Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations RajuBanner

Nol, Kellan and Raju met up at their assigned departure point and Nol took one last look at Silvanost before he turned to Raju and Kellan, “The scars will last a long time… Maybe the Silvanesti will stop denying that the war is even at their doorstep.”

He turned and looked at Kellan and Raju. Their faces were tired and showed the same emotion as his. He closed his eyes and in a flash stood in his native form. Raju followed suit and Nol stepped over to Kellan, kneeling down on his front legs to give Kellan easier access to place the saddle back on his body he waited until she had everything secured and tightened.

She rubbed her hand along his shiny scales as she finished and walked up to be face to face with him. He looked at her and smiled as best a dragon can smile and spoke, “Strap yourself in and rest, even sleep if you can. Raju and I are going straight to the Isle. We’ll only stop when you need to eat or relieve yourself, I apologize but considering the circumstances…”

Kellan smiled and rubbed her hand on his cheek as she nodded in agreement. He turned to look at Raju and spoke, “Do you have the spell ready?”

Raju nodded and Kellan looked at her curiously. Raju smiled and spoke, “Enchantment of speed, we’ll get there in half the time but it is still a full day and nights flight.”

Kellan climbed up onto Nol’s back and as soon as Nol felt she was strapped in Raju hissed the words of magic. Their scales flashed brightly and a strange coolness surrounded them. Simultaneously the cousin dragons kicked off the ground, twisted through the canopy of trees and soared into the air and beat their wings heavily. The acceleration of speed was phenomenal and the two of them, rider on Nol’s back, soared to the Northeast and towards their home.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations BranchBanner
Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations OlwaBanner

Olwa, Branch and Pela made their way to the Watergate of Sithelnost. It was the main gate and it was also the gate closest to the harbor. Wagons came in and out in an organized manner as merchants brought wares to trade and sell. Surprisingly there were a lot of humans and the atmosphere was mostly cheerful. The gate itself was ornate but formidable at the same time. Several dozen Elven guards stood easily and kept an eye on those coming and going.

The groups coming in were stopped as protocol demanded and asked their intentions, logged and permitted. As Olwa lead the three of them towards the gate guards he realized that if he gave their real names it would leave evidence of their arrival and he only had seconds to adjust the strategy, “Name?”

Olwa looked at the guard and spoke, “Ryla of Silvanost.” The guard looked up and noted the ornate leather armor and quirked a brow, “Surname?”

“Ryla Silverstrand of the House of Silverstrand.” The guard immediately snapped to attention and lifted his hand to his chest, “I beg your pardon Lord Ryla, I did not mean disrespect! I did not realize you were from the house of Silverstrand!” Olwa lifted his hand and shook his head, “No matter friend, but please do not log my real name.” The guard looked at him curiously and he leaned in, “This is Lady Trisha Whitehawk of the Northlands, she is a Princess and was on a diplomatic mission to see the Speaker of the Stars to discuss trade negotiations for their diamonds and salts. We don’t want to attract any unwanted attention so just make up some false names if you please.”

The guard nodded and spoke, “Of course my lord, but if I may be so bold, why is she not traveling with her own escorts?” Olwa nodded and spoke, “Is it common for the Northerners to travel freely into our forests? Admittedly relations between the Silvanesti and the Northerners has been strained at best, but the Speaker is looking to soften relations by introducing trade, and hopefully deeper diplomatic ties so we can be at peace. If Lady Whitehawk was to enter our lands with a contingency of soldiers would it not look negative towards those efforts? It was thought best to travel in a softer manner. Her people are planning to meet us in Pashin and from there they will escort her back to Queen’s Shield on the coast of Newsea.”

The guard nodded in understanding and then looked at Branch who had kept her hands folded in her belly and her head inclined the entire conversation, just like a servant would, “And you slave’s name?”

Olwa turned and looked at Branch and then back to the guard, “She is a wild elf, I don’t know her name, I just call her ‘Inya’.” The guard snickered in a smug manner and Olwa could feel the cold instantly begin coming off Pela’s body, he reached and touched her hand, telling her non-verbally to stay calm.

The guard looked back up to Olwa and spoke, “Lord Silverstrand, welcome to Sithelnost.” He stepped aside and the three of them walked past him and into the exquisite city. It was obvious that a great deal of effort was put into incorporating human type dwellings into the familiar Elven architecture of Silvanost. A massive trade square was only a few hundred meters from the main gate and was simply swarming with merchants hawking their wares. Olwa lead the two ladies into the square and then stopped in a small clump of grass off to the side. He looked at them and spoke, “Well that was easier than I thought it was going to be. So, I have a few silver pieces, but I don’t know if it is enough to get everything we need.”

Branch suddenly looked up sheepishly and spoke softly, “You pardons Master Olwa.” He turned and looked at her and furrowed his brows, “Branch I…” She brought up her hand and spoke, “Branch stole Master, she took from Master Ky’ly and Mistress Alawana.”

She reached into her tunic and removed a small bag which clearly contained coins. Olwa looked at her and then to Pela. Branches face was apologetic and downcast, Brach knew…she knew we would need money for this journey. When Branch saw you leaving and going by the Way Gate she gathered what she could quickly so to catch up.”

Olwa spoke, “How much is there?”

Branch looked sad again and spoke, “56 gold pieces Master.”

Olwa turned to look at Pela and then started laughing softly, “Well done Branch, WELL done.”

Branch looked at him curiously and spoke, “But… what Branch did was wrong Master Olwa! Branch should not have stolen from the Master and Mistress of the house!”

Olwa stepped forward and spoke, “Branch, was it right when he would hit you with a belt?” Branch looked at her feet and spoke, “When Branch did not do right it…” Olwa reached and lifted her chin up to look at him, “Branch, you have NEVER done wrong. You have served my family for longer than I can remember and they have treated you worse than the dog. On behalf of my family, consider this back pay!” Branch turned to look at Pela and then to Olwa, “Branch sees no better way to spend it then to buy us horses and comfortable bedding.”

Olwa smiled and spoke, “It is your money, you do with it what you like.” Branch smiled and nodded, “Branch shall meet you back here in one hour.”

Olwa nodded and watched as Branch disappeared into the crowd. He turned to look at Pela, there was sadness in his eyes.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations KellanBanner

It became routine for Kellan to walk up to Nol’s head and caress his silver scales before leaning in and kissing his snout. This was no different. At least, not in the fact she would do as she always did. As Nol and Raju revealed to her their plan, Kellan was a bit concerned knowing the strain it would put on the mighty creatures. While they were powerful they weren’t without limitations and the last thing she wanted was to see them drain themselves too much and be unable to defend themselves should the need arise. Enchantment or not, they were still in for a long flight.

Still, she trusted the dragons to know what they were doing and without hesitation she slid into the saddle and fastened herself in. Once she gave the signal she was ready she leaned down and let her legs hold her weight as Nol leapt into the with Raju by his side. Once more making herself one with his massive body, she waited until they reached the right altitude before she even thought of sitting up.

And thought of it was all she did. Up here, among the sparse clouds and fresh air, Kellan was able to relax the most and with the rhythm of Nol’s wings and the gentle glide on the air currents, she found herself drifting off into slumber. It had been an exhausting day and she was drained in every way possible. And like it or not, her body would take what it needed, like it or not.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Pela

Pela paid very close attention to what Olwa said to the guard at the gate. Everything relied on the plan they had devised and she needed to make sure she followed it to the last detail. Including the fake names he’d just given to them. So…she was the Princess Trisha Whitehawk. Befitting considering who she was, to be quite honest. Well….at least the name but perhaps not the title.

What amazed Pela even more was the knowledge of the land Olwa had just divulged. She knew he was well learned but she wasn’t exactly sure just how well until now. Not that she doubted his abilities, but to see it in action put any inklings of question she had rest once and for all.

She looked at the guard when he snickered at what Olwa had said to use as Branch’s name. She didn’t care for his reaction to the word, even though it was not really an insult. Pela knew enough of the Elven language to know what ‘Inya’ meant. It was a proper word for her as well. At least as far as gender was concerned. But for some reason, the guard made it seem like it was derogatory in nature and that didn’t set well with the young sorceress. If it hadn’t been for Olwa’s hand, she would have frozen the guard solid and delighted in shattering him into tiny pieces.

And they would have been in a bad situation then. Better to play along, for now, and make their way through the city instead of bringing unwanted attention their direction.

Pela was just starting to scope out potential, unknowing financiers when Branch disclosed the gold coins she had lifted from Olwa’s parents. Hearing some more of the things Olwa’s parents did to Branch while she worked for them once more angered the young woman and she wanted nothing more than to give them a taste of their own medicine. In fact….she vowed that once day, if given the chance, she would do just that. Still, Pela couldn’t help but grin as the full details were revealed and Pela nodded in agreement with Olwa.

”Ol….Ryla is right….Inya…”

Pela glanced around quickly to see if anyone was listening. She knew others were. You didn’t come to a place like this and be completely unnoticed. She knew they would have to play the parts well while they were here. And no time like now to do so.

”Use the coin as you see fit. In the meantime, Lord Ryla and I will move about looking for supplies we will need.”

As the wild elfess slipped off and Olwa looked back at her, Pela nodded in agreement to Olwa’s unspoken words.

”I know….we will make sure she never gets treated like that again. This I promise you….Lord Ryla.”

Pela’s ice blue eyes twinkled and she smiled a smile that was devious to say the least but only if you knew her well. Like Olwa did. She gestured to the city then.

”I believe we will find what we are seeking further in to the market square, yes?”

As they moved along, Pela glanced around at the many faces she saw. There was all sorts of people milling about. Elves and humans coexisted publically as though there was no class difference in their races. She saw Elves bartering with humans and vise verse. So unlike Silvanost, she thought.

She and Olwa made sure they didn’t show any outwardly affection for each other nor did they let their gazes linger too long on each other. They wished not to arouse any suspicion they were anything but what Olwa had stated. He was her guide and she was a visiting diplomat in search of a trade agreement.

Pela made mental note of the vendors who had the best supplies they would need at the best prices. While she was at it, she also made mental note of certain establishments they needed to avoid and others that would be good to visit. If for nothing else than to get the latest news out of the northern lands. After all, they were headed in that direction and it would be best to know what they were headed for instead of walking in blindly.

Once they had walked through the market square in its entirety, Pela turned to look back through the crowd and narrowed her eyes slightly. Branch should be arriving at any time with the horses, or so Pela hoped.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations OlwaBanner

Olwa smiled in response to Pela’s words and as they walked around he purposely made a point of showing her architectural differences between the Elves and Humans. He
knew she was quite aware of a lot he was telling her but for the sake of the intrigue they were attempting to pull off it was necessary.

As they made their way around and back to the meeting place Olwa turned and looked to see Branch approaching down the street with three mounts. They were beautiful and sleek, clearly she had managed to find good quality horses, not bargain or worn out beasts. As she walked up she bowed her head respectfully to Branch and spoke in Elvish, “Master Silverstrand, I managed to find us the mounts you requested.” She turned to Pela and spoke in her normal, broken common, “For the Mistress Lady Whitehawk, a mount that would match your hair, it seemed appropriate for I to do this, yes?”

Branch handed the reigns over to Pela and the animal seemed to take to her immediately. The horses color was so pure white she seemed to be made from Pela’s own snow white hair. The animal didn’t have a dark hair on its body and it hooved at the ground gently as she stood there.” Branch turned and handed both sets of reigns to Olwa and kept her head inclined, “For Master, the horses.”

Olwa took the reigns of both horses and then inspected them carefully. It was a formality for the show of this display they were making, he knew that Branch was more capable of picking good horses than he was, but for the sake of appearances he made it seem as though he was inspecting them to insure she had done her job properly. He turned to her and spoke as he handed her one of the sets of reigns, “You have done well inva, we need to gather the supplies. The Lady Whitehawk and I will go procure some food and water skins, please see that we have proper bedding and I will need more arrows, as will you. We will also need some rope and lamp oil.”

Branch kept her eyes to the ground as he addressed her and she nodded softly in response, “As Master Silverstrand requests.”

She reached out and handed Olwa the bag of coin, “What is left after the purchase of our mounts Master, might I have the money necessary for the supplies you have requested?” Olwa nodded and returned to her palm two gold coins, “This should be enough to cover what we need, now go.” Even as he said the words to make it sound like an order he could taste the bitterness of them on his tongue. He was never one to give an ‘order’, but in this case it was all part of their plan. Branch bowed low and disappeared back into the crowd and Olwa turned to Pela, “Lady Whitehawk, let’s tie these mounts and gather what we need to continue on.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Pela

Pela understood the importance of keeping up the front but it didn’t mean she had to like it. Especially seeing how subservient Branch was. She furrowed her brows slightly as she thought of what it must have been like for Branch to live under Olwa’s parents rule.

As Branch disappeared back into the crowd, Pela sighed heavily. She glanced at Olwa then nodded.

”Come….we need to get our supplies.”

As they moved back through the market square, Pela stopped at the vendors she had picked out on the first pass through. Olwa discovered how shrewd of a business woman she could be and she negotiated everything. If the vendor didn’t meet her on a fair price, she either took her business to another vendor or just the threat would be enough to cause the vendor to solicit her business by meeting her on the price.

When they were done, Pela had gotten them everything they needed to make the journey as well as negotiated the price for Olwa’s arrows. While she let him chose the ones he wanted, when it came to the price the vendor asked, Pela was adamant she wasn’t going to let Olwa pay that much for them. It took some time but finally Pela wore the vendor down and agreed on a price less than what he originally asked for.

With supplies in hand or held for pick up if they were too bulky or too heavy to carry, Pela and Olwa headed back out of the market square and ran into Branch once more. Pela smiled at the elfess then quickly corrected herself to make it look more like a formal gesture than anything.

”Have you gotten us a place for us to rest?”

Branch nodded respectively and turned her horse to the side so they could see the oil skin, bed rolls and one hundred meters of rope. She then looked to Olwa and bowed her head humbly as she spoke in Elvish again, “Will there be anything else Master Silverstrand?”

Olwa looked over the animal and checked that the supplies were tied on securely before turning back to her, “No.”

His answer was curt and short, like a royal elf would address a servant and he turned to Pela, “Lady Whitehawk, I believe we should begin the rest of our journey to get you back to your kin.”

Pela looked at him and nodded. He aided her to get on her mount and then got onto his. He began to go and Pela hesitated but Olwa turned to look at her, “Lady Whitehawk?”

Pela looked at Branch who was holding the reigns of her mount and he spoke, “Silvanesti servants and slaves are not permitted to ride horses, come Lady Whitehawk.” He lead them slowly back up the street, Pela behind him and Branch leading her horse by hand. As they approached the gate the guard who had taken their entrance information approached and bowed his head, “Master Silverstrand, it looks like you have what you came for.”

Olwa turned and looked at the two ladies, the supplies and horses and turned to look at the guard, “Yes, Sithelnost has proven once again to be a valued stop on any journey to the North.”

The guard nodded and smiled as he checked off their names on the entrance rooster. He looked back up at Olwa and spoke, “If it isn’t out of order I am curious why you didn’t have horses to begin with, I mean, pardon me but it seems odd that you would travel all the way from Silvanost without mounts.”

Olwa narrowed his eyes and his voice became suddenly aggressive, “It is in fact out of order, and though it is none of your business the Lady Whitehawk requested we move on foot through the forest, she had not until the last couple days seen the beauty of our forests and wished to see it more intently.”

The guard looked at Pela and then back to Olwa, “My apologies Master Silverstand, I meant no disrespect.”

Olwa looked at him and leaned forward on the horn of his saddle, “Mind your time next time I am here, for I will come back on my return journey.” The guard nodded and brought his hand to his chest in the traditional military salute of the Elves as Olwa urged his horse forward and the three of them exited the ornate gateway.

Slowly they moved to the north road and made their way across the bridge that crossed the river. They traveled about a kilometer before Olwa turned to look behind them. There was no sign of anyone having followed them and the city was well hidden now behind the dense forest. He stopped and dismounted, walked over to Pela and helped her off her mount. He walked over to Branch and smiled, “I apologize for having to treat you like dirt back there Branch.”

The wild elf looked at him and nodded her head lovingly, “Master Olwa did what was necessary to ensure the deception was complete, Branch knows Master Olwa’s real heart.”

She smiled again and the three of them unstrapped the goods and supplies from the third horse, retied everything to their own mounts and the three of them mounted up and took to the north road towards Sithelnost.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Color_10Tara was unsure how to respond to the Lady of the Stars so she remained quietly respectful, giving her her full attention. Finally, they were at a door and Tara saw the great lady hesitate, but only for a mere second before opening the door. She heard Tanjee's voice as well as the tears and hugged her back when she came to her. "Ahhh, Tanjee....I be sorry at what has taken place for ye and Aeolis. Please.....tell me what to do and I shall do it." She looked over at Aeolis leaning over Ceridwyn's still form and saw that he was weeping. To see the strong elf weeping brought tears to her own eyes. She turned to look at the Lady of the Stars and smiled at her, "I thank ye, m'lady, for showing us where Tanjee was. Ye are most gracious and kind."

"Tara...I'm sorry, but I must return to my post and give any aide that is needed. I will find you once I am finished." Tara looked up at Gideon's soft brown eyes and smiled at him, nodding her head and accepting the kiss he gave her before he nodded his head to Tanjee and left. Tara then turned her attention back to her friend and hugged her. "What can I be doing, Tanjee?"

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Pela

Pela was amazed at how well Olwa played the noble Elf so well. In fact, she was rather glad he wasn't like that in reality. If he was, she was certain they wouldn't be running away together. In fact, she was quite certain one of them would be dead by now. She was glad to leave the city of Sithelnost behind and move forward to Pashin. Pashin was going to be a far different city than Sithelnost but it would prove to have it's own challenges as well.

As they divided the supplies to even out the load on the horses and give each one their own things, Pela stroked the soft muzzle of the horse Branch had chosen for her. The mare wasn't exceptionally large but she was quite sturdy and she had a very sweet disposition. When her dark eyes looked at Pela it was as though she was trying to tell the young sorceress something. Smiling at the horse, she took the reins in her hand as she walked over to the side and easily stepped up into the saddle and settled herself in.

As they headed out again, Pela glanced over at Olwa and Branch as she spoke to both of them.

"When we get to Pashin it might be a good idea if we keep the names we gave in Sithelnost. It would be best in case someone from Sithelnost were to travel to Pashin as well. It is not uncommon for merchants to travel between both cities. But we will no longer need to treat Branch badly. In fact, we will all three need to be at the top of our game, as they say. While Sithelnost was a city with minimal danger, Pashin will be crawling with it. Literally in some cases. A city that sits on the edge of the bad lands cannot help but accept all sorts of travelers and citizens. If it wishes to thrive, anyway."

She looked ahead and admired the beauty of the forest as she continued.

"Bad Rock and I used to go there from time to time. More me than him. He would usually wait on the outskirts for me to return. We would visit there when we needed money to purchase supplies. The last time I was here was just before Lady Kellan came to get us to help with Heartlund."

Pela grew quiet then as she retreated within herself as memories from the past came to her. She took a deep breath then looked over at Branch and Olwa again with a small smile.

"That seems like a lifetime ago now."

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Healer

Tanjee was so glad to see Tara. The past twelve hours had been exhausting for her. And to see her brother so broken was heart wrenching. But to see her friend and know she made it out of the chaos safely brought a small amount of relief to her.

"Oh Tara....I am so glad to see you are safe. I was so worried. And when I did not see you in the many wounded, I was starting to think the worse."

She released her friend and turned to look at Aeolis again and felt her throat constrict. She looked back to Tara and silently ushered her out of the room and closed the door behind her.

"I fear Ceridwyn is under a powerful spell of some sort. Raju and I have tried to no avail to heal her but our Goddess is unable to do anything. It is as though Ceridwyn is dead yet she still breathes. I have never seen anything like this before. I pray we find someone who will be able to tell us how to reverse the spell. The dragons are seeking counsel with the ancients but their timeline is excruciatingly slow to those of the mortal races."

Tanjee looked into her friends eyes as though she was searching for an answer but knew there was nothing there.

"Such a beautiful thing has been made a mockery of. How could that mage do such a thing on that day? I knew she was ruthless but I had no idea just how much until now."

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Kyly

Ky'ly stood and looked out the window to the ruins of the Chamber of Stars. His eyes narrowed and he focused his gaze as the dragons took to the air just off the front lawn. He ground his teeth as the muscles in his jaw tightened and with a long inhalation he turned to check on his wife.

Allawana was laying on the bed, her face had its color back and she looked as fine as the day he had met her. She turned and smiled as she sat up and he placed a pillow behind her back, “It looks like Mishikal’s grace was all you needed.”

She nodded and responded in the affirmative and he spoke again, “Now only one loose end remains.” His eyes showed the resentment and anger at his sons departure and he turned to look at the door which lead to his armory, “I shall track them until I find them, I shall find our son, and I will kill the White Witch who bewitched his mind and twisted his logic. I will kill her and that filthy house elf…” He turned and looked at his wife, her face showing approval at his words, “I will return with our son, by Paladine I swear it.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations BranchBanner

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations OlwaBanner

Branch and Olwa found no flaw in Pela’s words and the three of them continued through the forest on their mounts for the next several hours, talking in low voices and enjoying not having to use their feet for a change. Olwa had taken point and was riding fifty or so meters ahead as Branch and Pela rode side by side. As they moved along the road Branch turned to Pela and with a smile she spoke, “Branch remembers when Master Olwa was born. The light of Solinari was bright the evening of and his little pink face seemed to absorb the goodness of it. Branch was Mistress Allawana’s mid-wife, I was there to help his coming out.”

She looked up the road at Olwa and smiled as she continued, “Mistress Allawana was very tired and her delivery was not… not a well one. She was very ill for many many months and Branch was then to be caretaker of Master Olwa. I would have to pump Mistress’ milk and then feed Master Olwa myself. He was always so hungry.”

She looked downwards slightly and continued, “Then Mistress finally one day, she was better and strong, she was wanting to be mother… but Olwa, little baby Olwa, he would cry when she held him, she would try and try, she would sing and kiss his head, she would hold him tightly to her bosoms and hum, but Master, he only wanted…” She stopped and turned to look at Pela, “Master only wanted to be hold by Branch.”

She inhaled deeply and looked down the road again. She was silent for a while and then spoke as she watched Olwa riding up ahead of them, “Mistress never liked Branch much, but after that she hated Branch. She would beat me to make me ugly to scare Master Olwa. She would hit my face to make it swell and bruise, Branch thinks to hope for him to not like me, to push me away and love her. But Master Olwa… him would always love Branch more than Mistress, and so she would just beat me harder.”

Branch inhaled deeply and turned to Pela forcing a smile, “Master Ky’ly is of the Speaker’s Guard, his a General in the ranks and one of Silvanesti's finest Rangers. Them is a very powerful and wealthy family, but they never chose to replace me or make me to leave. I never knew, I always said to her while she was hitting me with the switch, ‘Mistress… Mistress… Branch will leave and never bother you again.’ But she would just keep hitting me. Branch knows not why they kept me, maybe in her heart she know that Branch was taking good care of Master Olwa. Branch has fears though Istar'ostring, fears that he will come looking for us, fears that we might be found for there are few trackers with Master Ky'ly's skills.”

She watched as Olwa stopped and she slowed her horse in kind, as did Pela. As they made their way up beside him Olwa spoke with a smile unaware of what they had been talking about, “There is the forests edge, we are only a few kilometers from Pashin.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Allawana

As Allawana sat listening to her husband’s words, she could not agree more with him. Their son dealt them a huge blow of embarrassment and she was certain it was because the White Witch had somehow charmed him under some sort of spell.

Remove her from the face of Krynn, verno’ (husband). If you do not, I fear she will find a way back to him and we simply cannot have that. One stain within society is one too many as it is. And with her gone, he will not think of searching for her again.”

She smoothed out the soft blanket that covered her legs then looked up at her husband again.

”Make her suffer first. Along with that filth we allowed into our home. Let him see what you are capable of. Perhaps it will deter such behavior from him in the future.”

Allawana reached out her hand for him to take I and when he did, she smiled sweetly up at him.

”The conviction in your words assures me you will see them made good.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Pela

Pela listened intently to Branch. While she felt her anger rising as she heard of the way Branch was treated, she was glad to get some further insight into Olwa’s childhood and Branch’s connection to all him. From time to time her eyes would glance at Olwa as he sat astride the horse and Pela couldn’t help but feel her heart skip a beat at how striking he looked.

Still, as she heard of the repeated abuse Branch suffered at the hands of Olwa’s mother, of all people, Pwla was starting to understand much clearer as to why Olwa bonded better with Branch than his own mother and why Branch was so protective of him. And why Branch and he loved each other the way they did. It made Pela feel a pang of sadness for not knowing her own mother in such a way….but considering the fact her own mother abandoned her on the side of the road mere seconds after birthing her, Pela was also certain she would most likely kill the woman if she met her now.

Pela’s heart found another person to feel affection for and she reached over placing her cool hand over Branch’s warm one and smiled.

”Let him come, Branch. We are traveling back into territory I am more familiar with than he is. And you did not know me as I used to be. But you will if anyone or anything threatens us.”

When Olwa halted his progress and the women joined him on either side, Pela looked out over the barren land that laid between them and Pashin and she narrowed her eyes slightly before looking up at the sky. The sun was still rather high but if she pulled the hood of her tunic up over her head, it would be easier on her. And with the horse exerting the energy to walk, the heat should be relatively easy for her to handle. Reaching back and pulling her hood up over her white head, she looked over at Olwa and Branch.

”Well…..if time is of the essence then what are we waiting here for?”

Gently urging her horse forward, she approached the very edge of the forest carefully and halted once more. Peering out over the openness, she once more narrowed her eyes then looked left then to the right before slowly easing her horse out of the tree line. As the shade of the trees was left behind Pela could feel the heat of the sun shining down on her. While it wasn’t too bad right now, she knew that by the time she reached Pashin she would be ready to seek shade once more.

And sure enough, by the time Pahin started coming into view, Pela was grateful to see the buildings. And she was even more grateful for the cooling towels Branch had given her to keep her cool as they journeyed across the plains. While it wasn’t that long of a journey, it was long enough for the young sorceress.

As the gates came into view, she looked over at Olwa and Branch and smiled. There were guards posted but until Sithelnost, they didn’t ask for names but they were certainly eyes as they passed through. And also unlike Sithelnost the look and feel of Pashin was far different. There was an almost sinister feel to the place and people took not of the riders as they made their way through the city.

Pela felt the eyes upon her and while she didn’t look like it, she was very well aware of everything and everyone around her. It was crucial for he to be. As they passed by a particular establishment, she spoke quietly to Branch and Olwa.

”The Tankard and Flask is a particularly rough tavern. It is best we not venture into it if we do not need to. The Courtesan Castle would be suitable for Olwa, but not for us, Branch. Unless we worked there. Ah…now this is a place we would definitely be welcomed. And be relatively safe.”

Pela pulled her horse to a stop in front of a well maintained dwelling that had a shingle out front with the words “The Cradle and Spoon” on it. She looked over at Olwa and Branch.

”The name is quite deceiving. They have very clean rooms and the cook is rather well versed in many types of pallet pleasing meals. And the owner prides himself on privacy. Of course the doorman does tend to help in that area.”

Standing next to the door was a rather imposing figure of a man. He stood well over six foot, had a chest that resembled a barrel and arms the size of small tree trunks that were crossed over his chest. No hair covered his head but he did have a beard and mustache that were rather full and his dark eyes seemed to bore straight through you.

Looking over at Olwa, she leaned over and smiled as she spoke softly to him.

”Do not worry. He looks meaner than he really is. At least…as long as you do not start trouble.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Kyly

With the encouragement of his wife and her words of affirmation Ky’ly dressed and prepared for departure. He called his squire who assisted him in getting into his Ranger armor and got all his belongings together.

Walking into the city of Silvanost from his lavish treetop home, Ky’ly went first to his headquarters and acquired eleven Elves to accompany him. He picked the finest Rangers in his unit and instructed them to be ready by sunset to depart. Their mission was to retrieve his son at whatever cost. His Elves were loyal, Ky’ly was one of the finest and most respected commanders in the Speaker’s Guard. His was “the First”, a highly decorated and proficient unit of the Speakers personal protection. “The First” had been the watchers of the inner wall for thousands of years and the most elite of them walked and remained with the Speaker at all times to ensure his safety. They were the most elite of the soldiery Silvanost had to offer.

Ky’ly met with his Elves one hour after their commands were given. All were at the gate of the inner wall and he looked them over. His armor was the finest Elven leathersmiths were capable of making. It was almost as hard as steel but as flexible as cloth. It was silent as he moved and the decorative embossments on it were a wonder unto themselves. On his left chest was proudly displayed the symbol of the Speaker of the Stars and he wore it with arrogant pride. Looking over his Elves he spoke, “We go to retrieve my son. Our mission is not official, but you have all been briefed on this fact. He has been bewitched but the Sorceress Pela of the Netherman, and I intend to see him returned. We know they are heading north, so that is where we will start. I warn you, she is most likely taking him into Netherman country, our enemies on our border. This is not a safe mission, most likely we will need to shed blood. This is your last chance to withdraw and not accompany me. I assure you that it will not be held against you.”

Because of the amount of respect he had among his troopers, Every Elf moved their mount forward, not backward, in a show of solidarity. Ky’ly nodded in recognition and spoke, “Then we ride north.” He swung his smoky black horse around and slowly the contingency of Rangers began heading to the main gate at the North of Silvanost.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations OlwaBanner

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations BranchBanner

Olwa looked at Pela unassured by her words but then turned to the very large man who raised an eyebrow in curiosity. Olwa cleared his throat and spoke, "Greetings sir. We..., um, we come to water our horses and grab a bite to eat. My friend here says that this is the finest place in town for our needs and as well as I know her I trust her judgement over mine, especially since I have never been to Pashin."

The man seemed to huff slightly and his eye wondered to Branch and then to Pela who was just behind the she-elf. He cocked his head slightly and leaned forward as he focused his gaze on her. He spoke with a gruff and intimidating voice that Olwa felt was more than appropriate for the sight of him, "Pela?"

Pela smiled softly and nodded her head. The man uncrossed his arms and shook his head in amazement, "Goodness girl, it's been, what two years? By the gods you have sprouted up! Look at the size of you now!"

He turned to look back at the Elves and then to her once more, "Riding now in the company of..." Pela furrowed her brows slightly and very gently shook her head and the man instantly clamped up. Olwa was impressed, he understood her immediately and the discretion that she was asking without a word passing between them. He looked at her and without skipping a beat continued, "...others your own age. It's fine time you did too, gods knows I don't think I ever saw you come here with anyone, always just grabbing supplies for your father I remember, half a lamb and three rabbits, raw, always liked to cook them himself aye?"

Pela nodded and the man smiled from under his bushy beard, "Well, you are always welcome as usual. Take your horses around the side and Morty will handle them for you."

Olwa was about to move at the man's instruction when Pela touched his hand softly and he stopped to look at her. She smiled and nudged her head towards the large doorman and Olwa furrowed his brow in confusion. She whispered so low under her breath that he couldn't understand and he shook his head in confusion, looking from her to him again and then back to her. He was so confused that finally the doorman cleared his throat and Olwa turned to look, "She is saying young Master, that I should be tipped for my words, instructions, and allowing you entrance into the establishment."

Olwa looked even more confused now and he repeated the word, "Tipped..." He looked at the man in confusion and spoke, "Begging your pardon sir, but I don't see how on Krynn I could possibly tip you over, nor based on your size would I venture to do so."

The man laughed so deeply his entire body shook and after catching his breath he leaned forward and whispered, "Clearly little lord you aren't from these parts. A tip is a small, shall we say, courtesy of monetary sorts in thanks for the service rendered. Particularly in appreciation for my never remembering that the three of you ever came."

Olwa leaned back and nodded in understanding. He had no idea how much was necessary so he handed the man a gold coin and his face brightened, "Well there ya are little lord, I will personally make sure that the stable hands rub your mounts down, feed them, water them and give the nice clean stalls. Welcome to the Cradle and Spoon."

Branch had only watched the entire time, taking in all that transpired and it wasn't until they circled the building that Pela would notice her hand was on her dagger, and just now being released. The wild elves eyes were darting every which way to watch for danger, clearly she was nervous and anxious about their human surroundings. As they dismounted Branch rubbed her nose on the horses velvety muzzle and whispered softly as she bid it farewell. The horse seemed to understand and turned to watch as the three of them entered into the establishment.

The stench of stale beer, roasted potatoes, dried meats and body odor hit them the second the door was breached and Branch turned her head down slightly. It wasn't clear if she did this to be subservient to Olwa and Pela our out of an attempt to stifle the smell from her nose. Olwa coughed softly at the stench and he turned to look at Pela who seemed to know exactly what smells that were to be expected. He turned to look back into the dimly lit tavern area and he whispered, "What do we do now?"

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Pela

Pela was glad Burl recognized her and at the same time understood her need. He wouldn’t ask questions as to why she needed to be discreet nor would he see the need to gossip to anyone about her presence. Even after she had gone. And given the fact Olwa paid the man handsomely as a tip, he inadvertently gained more protection from the large man with his generosity.

As the trio dropped the horses off at the stables owned by the tavern, she smiled to Morty who also recognized her.

”Pela? Where on Krynn have ye been hidin’ gal? We was hopin’ he worst hadn’t happened to ye. We heard the news about Heartlund and the return of dragons to the land and when ye hadn’t showed up fer a while, we was thinking’ perhaps….AH…..but is good t’see ye again. And travelin’ with some mighty fine horse flesh too. Mighty fine.”

Morty’s trained eye was already assessing the mounts as he took the reins and slowly eased his hands along the muscles. When Pela stepped closer and handed him another gold coin his eyes lit up as both brows raised. He turned his faded blue eyes to look at her.

”It is wonderful to see you again, Morty. I am afraid things have not been pleasant since our last meeting. While I survived the worst of things, I am afraid father did not. That is why I am traveling with company now. We are headed back to my home and these two fine Elves have offered to make sure I make it there OK. And only the three of us are going.”

She leveled a pointed look at the man who let his gaze drift to both elves then back to Pela and he nodded in understanding.

”I be sorry fer yer loss, lass. I know how much you loved yer father. May the Gods bring him peace in the afterlife. And no worries about anything…..I will tend to yer mounts and make sure they be well rested for your journey. And be mum about it.”

Pela smiled at the man and nodded then turned and nodded to Olwa and Branch. When she led them into the tavern and the scents, sounds and sights greeted them, Pela stood there for a moment and inhaled deeply. She never realized how offensive a dwelling like this could be but after spending time in more ‘civilized’ places, she realized what Olwa and Branch were looking offended about. She leaned in when she heard Olwa ask what they were to do now and without looking at him, she spoke softly.

”We secure ourselves quarters. Come….follow me.”

Passing through the tavern several people turned to see the new comers as they sat and ate, drank and shared conversation. They made their way to the bar where a slightly older gentleman stood wiping the worn, wooden surface down. He looked up to see the trio and one brow arched.

”Can I help you, young lady?”

Pela smiled at the man.

”We would like rooms for the night, sir. Next to each other if that could be arranged.”

The man narrowed his eyes as he looked at her then slowly leaned forward until he was almost nose to nose with her. His voice was whisper soft as he spoke.

”Pela? Is that you? My eyes aren‘t that well but I never forget a voice. And my goodness….look how much you‘ve grown, young lady.”

Pela smiled and nodded then glanced around slightly keeping her voice as soft as his own.

”Yes, Cristof. It is. I am traveling with friends I have met. A young Elf Lord and an Elfess. We would like rooms but do not wish to be a burden. Do you have anything for us?”

The older man looked at the two figures next to Pela and tried to get a better look at them but it was obvious his vision was all but gone. He looked back at Pela and nodded then leaned closer keeping his voice low again as he understood her unspoken message. As he spoke he reached beneath the bar then handed a door key.

”Aye….I can…Got just the room for ye. It’s up on the second floor closest to the rear stairs. But, I only have the one. The three of ye will have to share it. Not too many others up in that area and the few who are, are quiet. Falicia is still the maid so if you need anything, just let her know.”

Pela nodded and smiled and Cristof held her hand between his.

”Good to see you back here, child.”

Pela smiled once more then slowly slipped her hand out of his and turned to Olwa and Branch.

”This way.”

She led them back through the tavern and to the main stairs that led to the upper floor. The wooden stairs were well worn and a few creaked as they placed their weight on them. Once at the top of the stairs, she turned to the left and walked down a corridor before turning right and walking to almost the very end. The sounds and smells of the tavern faded the further they made their way down the hallways. Pela looked at Olwa and Branch, smiling before she placed the key in the lock and turned it. Opening the door, she stepped inside and looked around.

The room was rather large and a large, four post bed occupied the center wall to the left of the door. On the right was a large settee with soft throw pillows positioned close enough to the fireplace yet still far enough away to feel as though it was separated from the bed. A large wardrobe, dresser and dry sink occupied the other free walls and a privacy screen occupied the far corner. Behind the screen was a large tub that sat on four clawed legs. Several towels and different fragrances occupied a couple of stools close to the tub.

Once the room was inspected, Pela turned to Branch and Olwa.

”Well…..it is not home, but I believe it will do for the night.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations BranchBanner
Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations OlwaBanner

Branch and Olwa followed Pela’s lead. As they made their way to the room and had a look around Olwa nodded and turned to Pela, “You are correct, this will be perfect.”

He turned to look at the bed and spoke, “That bed is large enough for the two of you, I’ll sleep on my bedroll over here near the window.”

Branch was about to protest and he interrupted, “Branch, it would be appropriate for it to be this way and no other.”

Branch looked at him and then to Pela before nodding softly. She the spoke however, “Istar’ostring will need proper rest above all however, and so I too will sleep on my bedroll, she doesn’t need Branch beside her.”

She looked at Pela and smiled, “Branch will be plenty comfortable on a bedroll too.”

Turning to Olwa she spoke, “Master, branch will go retrieve food for us if you wish.” Olwa walked up to her and smiled at her and spoke, “No, I will go, you two bathe and get today’s journey washed off of you. I will be back in half a candle tick. That should be plenty of time I think.”

Branch nodded, knowing that was probably best and without a word walked over to the window. She spoke as she looked out into the grey, human city, “Istar’Ostring should bathe first… that is appropriate. I will set our beds and make some tea.”

She turned and looked at the two of them and though her face was as soft and tender as always it was clear that there would be no debate on Pela bathing and getting clean first. Olwa laughed softly and walked out of the room to go back down to the main public area of the tavern. As he walked into the room the stale smell of beer and sweat hit him again. He was ready for it this time and managed to keep himself composed. He walked to the Barkeep and spoke, “Greetings again sir, I would like to order some food.” The Barkeep squinted at him and once Olwa finally came into focus he nodded and spoke, “And what would the little lord like?”

Olwa ordered some fresh fruits, bread, roasted chicken and some mead. He turned to look at the room and the gruff crowd mostly ignored him, “Five silvers please.” Olwa snapped back to reality and turned to face the elderly Barkeep again. “Five silvers little lord.” Olwa shook his head and spoke as he handed the money over, “My apologies sir, I did not mean to…” The old Barkeep laughed and spoke, “It is of no matter little lord, I will have things ready in a quarter tick.”

Olwa nodded and turned back to the room. A burly young man was standing almost at his back when he did and he leaned back slightly in surprise. The man who couldn’t have been more than 24 or 25 annuals gave a half toothed smile and spoke with breath that would have knocked a horse to the ground, “Well, well, well… an elf.” Olwa cleared his throat softly and nodded nervously, “Aye sir… I am.”

The man cocked an eyebrow and looked him over, “A rich elf from the look of you.”

Olwa swallowed nervously again and was about to speak when a huge hand grabbed the man’s right shoulder and spun him around. Burl looked the man in the face and spoke, “Back to your business boy.”

Burl clearly towered over the fellow but the young man spoke back, “What are you an Elf lover Burl?”

Burl narrowed his eyebrows and spoke in a soft but threatening manner, “There are no Elves here.”

The young man turned and pointed at Olwa but suddenly found his hand wrapped inside Burl’s which squeezed and the sound of a finger snapping followed rapidly by his screaming echoed through the tavern. He spun to look at Burl as he cradled his broken finger, “As I said boy, there is no one in this Tavern, just you, and me.”

The boy nodded and scampered off while Burl turned to look at Olwa. With a half wink he turned and walked back to the door. “Order’s up little lord.”

Olwa turned and looked at the elderly Barkeep and smiled with a nod as he handed him another silver coin, “Thank you sir, and please thank Burl for me next time he is around you.”

He picked up the tray and carried it to the room knocking softly when he arrived. He heard Pela’s voice, “Who is there?” Olwa spoke, “It is I, and I have dinner.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Arthur

"We've had enough of your singing for now." The man in the grey tunic said again. His two friends were standing behind him, they looked as put out as he did.
"Did ya hear what I said?" The man said.

Kwinn finished the verse of the song he had started, it was something about lusty topless mermaids off the coast of the great lake at Dogwater.
"Are you speaking to me?" Kwinn said with a slight slur in his voice, the kind of slur brought on by multiple draughts of good quality mead, such as was served here.

"Why are you so bothered?, tis a great old song about sailing and bosoms and the like." Kwinn snorted at the merchant in the grey shirt.

'We don't want to hear your foul songs any longer." The man said. "Yeah..." his friends agreed.

Kwinn stood up out of his chair to face the man, he nearly fell to his hands and knees as his did so but maintained his bipedal balance and looked the man face to face. Kwinn picked two small biscuits from his table and rubbed them into a small glob of butter from the same plate. Kwinn mushed the sticky biscuits onto the ears of the merchant, taking care to make sure they properly covered the man's ears.
"There you are music lover, now you need not hear any more fine songs of adventure and women..." Kwinn said with a big grin.

At this the men lunged at the long haired ranger, the older merchant in grey was doing his best to strangle Kwinn, the man's friends were feebly punching and grabbing at the ranger.

"What kind of establishment are you running Christof?" Kwinn chuckled as the men tried to get a hold of him.
"More biscuits at table 4!" Kwinn hollered as the three merchants pushed him down.

Christof came out from behind the bar, the whole place had grown quiet, all the patrons were watching the fracas. An ice cold pail of water washed over the ranger and the three men wrestling about on the floor. Christof stood over them clutching the empty bucket.

"Enough of this knavery..." Christof said sternly.
"Johann, you and your apprentices go back to your own table and YOU..." Christof grabbed a hold of Kwinn by the arm and led him out the front of the tavern. Christof walked the filthy, drunken ranger to a water trough and pushed him in.
"Don't come back until you sober up, Kwinn." Christof barked. Christof rubbed his hands together. "By the gods you're filthy, take a bath boy!" Christof said wiping his hands on his apron.

"I am taking a bath, Christof..." Kwinn replied childishly as he splashed around in the trough.
"You can't kick me out, I have a room here!" Kwinn said as he turned around in the water.

"So go to it." Christof huffed as he walked back into the tavern.

"Christof..." Kwinn said gently.
"Yes?" Christof replied.
"You're a beautiful man..." Kwinn said with a wink.
"Go to bed..." Christof said as turned away from the ranger who was reclining in the water trough as if it was a copper tub at a fine bathhouse.

No sooner had Christof returned to the tavern that Kwinn began another baudy song, this one was about ancient wood nymphs, wood nymphs who had not seen a man in a long time. The song was long and it was loud enough for all to hear.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Pela

When Olwa left, Pela wasted no time in getting her bath. Without the need for warm water, she was able to fill the tub to a suitable depth, strip and get a much needed bath. The cool water helped invigorate her and she scrubbed until her skin took on a healthy pink hue. Once her hair was washed to her satisfaction, she quickly stepped out o the tub and dried herself off. Looking at the tub, she used a spell Rayann taught her and when the water disappeared from the tub she smiled in satisfaction.

Quickly dressing in the extra set of clothes she brought along with her, she was just brushing her hair out as Branch was getting a bath when the knock on the door was heard. She paused a moment before she walked towards the door. Just to be on the safe side, she prepared a spell and was ready to let it go when she heard Olwa answer her inquiry.

Hearing his voice she let the spell go and quickly unlocked the door opening it and letting him step through. Quickly closing the door, she locked it once more. The sound of water splashing from behind the privacy screen told them both Branch was still in the tub. Smiling at Olwa, Pela walked with him to a table Branch prepared for their meal near the settee, she helped Olwa get the things set out for them. The aroma of the food made Pela belly growl softly and she giggled softly.

”I did not realize how hungry I was until I smelled the food. Mable is a rather good cook. At least she was the last time I was here.”

She looked at Olwa again.

”Did you have any trouble?”

When Olwa told her about the incident that took place, she furrowed her brows slightly.

”Burl is very intuitive. I am sure he would not have done anything if he did not feel the need for it. Unfortunately, Burl is not the most discreet of people and therefore we must be cautious when we venture out.”

She chewed pensively on her bottom lip as she studied the door.

”I will be certain to place a spell that will alert us to any unwanted visitors when we finally turn in for the night.”

She looked over at Olwa again then caught movement out of the corner of her eye to see Branch emerge from behind the screen. Like Pela she looked as though she felt better and with her hair still damp, it was obvious she took full advantage of the tub in their room as well.

”Ah…Branch….Olwa has brought us some delicious food. Come. Sit and have dinner with us.”

Just then Pela heard something that sounded like a drowning Minotaur whaling from outside the tavern. She paused, blinked as she heard the awful noise then looked over at Olwa and Branch with a rather worried but confused look on her face.

”What is that terrible noise?”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations BranchBanner

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations OlwaBanner

Olwa entered and set the food down where Pela suggested. They worked together to get things ready and waited for branch to finish cleaning up.

“Branch prefers a nice river or waterfall to THAT!”

Olwa laughed as she pointed almost angrily at the tub. She continued, “Branch could barely move in that, that, false pond! Branch will not ever understand how one can clean thez’self in such a small pond.”

Olwa was about to speak when he turned to look at the window, hearing the same thing that Pela did. As he walked and looked he saw a rather dirty and scruffy looking man being dunked in the horse trough across the street. Shaking his head he was about to turn away and ignore it when he suddenly looked closer and spoke, “By the gods that’s…”

Pela turned to look and he finished, “…Kwinn.”

Pela’s face went slightly pale as did his. Branch stepped up and looked out at the human and her brows furrowed slightly as she spoke, “Is his trouble?”

Olwa shook his head and spoke, “No, the opposite actually. He’s a human Ranger, a damn fine one at that. He was at the Battle of Heartlund with us and worked very closely with Lady Rose and her Knights. He assisted in tracking and keeping information parchments coming in regarding the enemies movements. I have to say he was almost to Elven standards, best human Ranger I ever saw in action. He disappeared very shortly after the battle, nobody knew where he left, or why.”

He turned to look at Pela, “What do you think he is doing in Pashin? It seems like an odd place, but then again, he was very rough around the edges, so maybe it makes sense. What I am more concerned with is our not being seen, if anyone is able to report back as to our location we are sure to be found.”

Branch turned and looked at the man and then to Olwa and Pela, “Branch will handle him.”

Olwa immediately shook his head, “No Branch, no. The less we are known of the better.” Branch turned to look at Olwa and Pela and smiled deviously, “Only, he not know Branch, only Master Olwa and Istar’ostring. If Branch can distract him for enough, she can ensure he not follow us or even sees you.”

Olwa inhaled deeply and watched as Kwinn walked back into The Tankard and Flask. Before he could turn around he heard Branch grabbing her things. He reached and grabbed her arm with concern in his eyes but she touched his face gently and spoke, “Master Olwa need not worry about Branch, most important is to get Istra’ostring to her home in the mountains. Master and Istra’ostring are to leave first thing in the morning, no matter if Branch is with them or not, understand?” Pela and Olwa looked at her pensively and she spoke in a more maternal tone, “Understand?!”

Olwa instinctually nodded and she gave one sharp nod as she turned to look at Pela and spoke to her mind, ~”Take cares of Master Olwa while I am gone… and take care of you.”~

She turned and in a flash was out the door and crossing the street in the Tankard and Flask. As she entered Branch looked around and saw Kwinn being picked up and thrown out into the stables behind the tavern for singing his second song, she slipped back outside and around the building to the back where Kwinn was shouting something derogatory at the Inn Keeper as he retreated back into the Tavern. When Kwinn looked up he would see an extremely attractive and very wild looking Kagonesti Elf looking down at him. She extended her hand and spoke in thickly broken common, “Greetings, my is called Branch.”

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Pela

As Pela watched Branch go, she felt a twisting in her gut that Branch should stay with them. Especially in Pashin. But even as she nodded affirmatively to Branch’s mental message, she knew she couldn’t stop the Elfess from doing what it was she set her mind to do. Both of their faces crowded the window so they could see what was going to happen next and when Branch disappeared inside the rougher tavern, Pela felt that twisting in her gut row.

Slowly stepping away from the window, she looked at Olwa, glanced at the door as she chewed on her bottom lip then looked back at Olwa once more.

”That is no place for Branch to be by herself. I know she is well trained but this is not like Sithelnost. There are people here who would give anything to harm others. Especially a lone Elfess. We cannot let her go alone, Olwa. I would rather suffer her wrath for not listening to her than see something happen to her. We must go to help her. Especially with Kwinn….We could sneak him up the back stairs and bring him into the room with us. No one will know and we could go our one ways in the morning. Do you not agree?”

It was clear Pela wanted Olwa to agree with her but if he didn’t, she was prepared to go out alone if she had to.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations OlwaBanner

Olwa watched with Pela and when she disappeared into the Tankard and Flask he felt the same nervousness in his gut. As Pela spoke he listened intently but he shook his head as she spoke, “I do agree with you, but I don’t…”

Pela furrowed her brow and she immediately turned to go get her things and leave. He reached and grabbed her arm gently to get her to look at him again. She did but she was cross, he could see it on her face and especially in her eyes, “Pela wait, please. We agreed that she was to accompany us only if she be an equal, not a servant or slave. She is asserting herself right now, it’s the only time I have seen her assert herself in such a direct manner. Maybe it is more out of respect for her grasping for freedom that makes me hesitant than anything else. You are right, she is accomplished in her training, but don’t underestimate her, she is a Kagonesti Elf, if there is only one thing they are good at it is adapting to their environment and making the best with what they have. Besides, Kwinn isn’t an evil guy, he fought alongside our forces in the Battle for Heartlund, I don’t suspect that he will do anything to harm her, why would he? What possible motivation would he have to do such a thing?”

He turned and looked back at their untouched dinner and then back to Pela, “Here’s the thing, Branch asked us to stay, she asked us to leave whether or not she is with us. Clearly she has a plan to keep Kwinn from seeing us and giving him any chance to recognize us. I say we give her that chance, but I will leave the decision to leave, you aren’t my prisoner or my servant, you are a free woman who can do whatever she wants, but as for me, I am going to stay here and respect her wishes.”

He walked over to the small table and picked up a piece of the bread, tore it in half and began to eat it as he looked out the window towards the stables where their horses were being rubbed down.

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations Pela

Olwa was correct. Pela HAD to trust in Branch and what she was doing. And when Olwa went to sit down at the table, Pela glanced out the window one last time before looking over at Olwa again. As the silence of the room settled around Pela and Olwa, the sorceress blinked and slowly turned. Looking at Olwa again then letting her light blue eyes roam around the room, it dawned on her almost like a large boulder dropping on her, she was alone with the young Elf. Completely alone. And there was a rather large bed in the room they occupied. Slowly her gaze turned to look at Olwa and her cheeks colored as the implication of such a thing washed over her.

Feeling as awkward as a new born calf, Pela stepped away from the window, and walked over to the table with Olwa space between them. Sitting down and making sure her eyes looked anywhere but his, she started eating her dinner as well. Pela felt silly. Why was she suddenly so nervous around Olwa. They’d been through so much together. They had been alone from time to time in the past. So what was so different about this particular time? Without realizing it, Pela’s eyes glanced towards the bed. While she was worldly in many things, she was still rather innocent about others. it was then she realized why she was so anxious abot Branch not being with her in the room with Olwa. As her gaze moved to Olwa’s, she smiled nervously and took a sip of the water then set the glass back down.

”The last time I was in Pashin I stayed in a room here. Father and I did not have such fine things and when we came here to get supplies and food, he would stay hidden on the outskirts of Pashin and allow me one night of staying in a room humans normally stay in.”

She broke off another piece of bread and dipped it into the hot broth of the soup and nibbled as she kept talking.

”it was something Bad Rock started shortly after I was able to venture out without him by my side. He worried, of course, but I always returned to him. I met Morty, Burl and Cristof when I was younger. No one ever gave them the time of day let alone talked to them about anything. People thought of Burl as nothing but a fleshy weapon. Others treated Morty as if he was witless and Cristof was getting ripped off more than he was getting paid. As I got to know the men, I found there was much more to them than people realized. And it angered me when I saw the way they were treated. So I did something about it.”

”With each visit, I would find one of them in need of my services. A customer taking a riding whip to Morty for supposedly mistreating their horse. Someone purposely making Burl lose his temper. A customer paying Cristof with less money than they said they were. I would find those same people and make them pay for their treatment of the others. I would freeze the arm of the man who whipped Morty then break it off and watch it shatter into pieces. The one who got Burl angry would find themselves suddenly frozen to their bed and the only way they could get free was to peel layers of their skin off. Or they would simply lay there and freeze to death. And the one who lied to Cristof would find themselves without a tongue and hands. In between all of this, I befriended the men. They started getting used to seeing me on a regular basis and it was just before Bad Rock and I went to Heartlund they figured out what I was doing. They could have turned me over to the authority here but they did not. Instead, they promised me that should I ever need anything, all I had to do was ask and they would be there for me.”

Shrugging her shoulders slightly, she picked up her glass of water and chilled it with the touch of her hand to the glass before she took a sip.

”I did not think they were serious and had said that only out of fear of me. But I see…..they were sincere. I am glad to know they are men of their word."

Bk 2: Ch5 - Fragmentations OlwaBanner

Olwa kept looking outside until he heard Pela’s voice and then he turned to look at her. Her cheeks were slightly flush and he made a note to ask if she was getting too warm again but he wanted to give her his attention as she told her story.

He listened and nodded as she hit highpoints of the tale. As she spoke of the things she was doing he was perplexed, she had never seemed the type to do these sorts of acts of vengeance or cruelty. He understood the need for justice but not in the sense of taking matters into ones own hands and become a vigilantly of sorts. Of course he grew up in a society that was relatively peaceful, there was none of the cheating or abuse she was speaking of, at least not in public. As she finished and spoke about being glad these men were men of her words he nodded and smiled almost sadly, “It is a rare thing anymore to find people who are true to their words, human or otherwise.”

She looked at him and smiled with a nod and he smiled again, this time more happily. He felt relief that she was not going out to pursue Branch, though he wanted to go as well he was confident that she would be alright. Pela started blushing again and she was refusing to make eye contact, staring at her feet and staying completely silent. He could see she was deep in thought and he crinkled his brow slightly as he spoke, “Pela, what is wrong? You are acting as if something is bothering you, or otherwise on your mind… what’s wrong?”
