Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Empty
PostSubject: Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame   Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Icon_minitimeMon Nov 10, 2014 9:40 pm

Despite the nerves and the inhibitions of the group, the remainder of the flight to California was quiet and the air was easy on them. Sionn had given Lilly some vague answers when she asked about his condition, assuring her that he was nothing more than tired, and clearly he was, the circles under his eyes showing he had barely slept since they left Scotland, or maybe even longer.

As the plane landed and rolled to a stop in front of another private hanger, the passengers deboarded and headed inside. Ean checked the gear bags while Elizabeth snuck away to take some more motion sickness medication. After a few minutes the group managed to verify that everything was in place and Ean spoke, “Alright lads, lassies, Sionn tells me that there are no other aircraft scheduled to arrive to this hanger for about thirty minutes. If ya have any business to take care of you’ve got a wee bit of time. We have a couple vans that Annette and Erich supplied so Dietrich and I will load up the gear and we will set off for the hotel in San Francisco when everyone is ready.”

He looked at Aurora with a smile and pulled her in as he kissed her forehead, “Lexy gave me a wee bit more of that medication, take it if you need it, she assures me it won’t knock your wits about.”

He slipped the vile into her palm, kissed her on the forehead again and then turned to Dietrich, “Well my friend, these bags are no gon’ta move themselves aye?”

Soon enough the group was in the vans, Sionn was driving one and Ean the other. He followed Sionn for a short drive and they arrived at a very nice looking hotel. The group had done their best to dress “normal” so they could blend in, but in the end they still stuck out like a bunch of out of towners, luckily if there was one place one could look “out of place” but not be noticed, it was San Francisco.

After a couple hours the group had settled in. The McGhee’s had reserved them each their own room on the same floor, every room adjacent to one another, and even a room that was currently empty but waiting for Kain. In addition there were four extra rooms at the end of the hall that all had access to. The gear as well as other necessary equipment was stored here so the room wouldn’t get too crowded. Elizabeth and Lexy had two rooms that shared a door, they had immediately opened it and were for all practical purposes in the same room, even electing to sleep in the same space and use the other as a “living room”. Ean was in a room next to theirs and noticed that Aurora’s was beside his and also had one of the shared doors, but he said nothing, though his thoughts were running wild as to whether or not this was a coincidence.

Kimiko sat in her room, looking out the window across the city and her eyes rested on the Golden Gate bridge. She had never been to San Francisco, and so far she did find it quite beautiful. As she calmed herself and focused on the beauty of the bright red bridge a soft knock ticked off the door. She turned and spoke softly, “Come in.”

Sionn, eyes dark with lack of sleep entered and looked at Kimiko with an expected hollowness to his expression. With a smile that barely hid her concern she nodded her head softly and spoke, “Hello Sionn.”

Sionn looked up at her and forced a smile but it faded as quickly as it had appeared. Kimiko stood and walked over, looking at him, “I am concerned Sionn.”

Sionn stepped into her and spoke, “What is there to be concerned about?”

She furrowed her brows and stepped back, “You look like you haven’t slept in days.”

“I haven’t.”

“Why not?”

Sionn leaned into her again, his crystal green eyes swirling as he licked his lips, “It’s difficult to say, but who can ever know these sorts of things.”

He leaned in again, clearly making an advance. Kimiko placed her hand on his chest and pushed, “No.”

Sionn stopped, looking at her longingly, “You are refusing me? My family? All our hospitality?”

Her brows dipped deeply and she spoke with a deep conviction and authority, “I owe you nor your family anything.”

“Don’t you owe us something? Don’t you owe me something?”

Kimiko’s eyes suddenly flared with dangerous sparkling energy and Sionn immediately retreated, noting that he had crossed the line. She said nothing, simply looking at him, hands open, fingers outstretched. He took a half step back and narrowed his eyes on her, “Do you not find me attractive?”

Kimiko inhaled deeply and spoke, “No.”

Sionn’s muscles twitched tightly under his cheeks as he tightened his jaw. He was looking for something to say, clearly, but found no words.”

“I will pay for my own room, and expenses.”

Sionn, again, simply stared at her. Several awkward, silent moments passed, but Kimiko didn’t budge in the slightest and finally spoke softly but with authority, “I think you need to leave.”

Without a word, Sionn turned and left her room, not looking back, the latch clicking softly as he walked back into the hall.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame The_li10Lilly stopped unpacking, not that she had much to unpack and left her room to go speak to Kimiko about Sionn. She was worried about him. Something wasn't right with him. She was silent as she walked the short distance to Kimiko's room. She tilted her head when she saw the door was open was double quiet now, her hand on the hilt of one of the blades Sionn had made for her when she heard Sionn's voice. She peeked around the door and saw everything, heard everything and her heart shattered. She'd still held some hope for him in her heart. She backed up when he exited the room, standing just a few feet from Kimiko's door, her odd eyes so filled with heartbreak that she didn't think she'd be able to stand it. She looked broken.

"Why, Sionn?", she asked in a quiet voice filled with sadness as a silver tear slid down her pale cheek.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame LQUnhE

Carla stared into the distance past the gap where the car had once been as she listened to Kimiko. She sighed; “It’s all quite complicated, isn’t it?”

She kept having to accept all the differences between this new world and the world as she knew it, but at this point it was hardly surprising anymore. The road would be full of surprises and it wasn’t unlikely for most of them to be unpleasant. She’d just have to keep rolling with the punches, even if every fiber of her being wanted to dismiss what she witnessed.

“Thank you for trying to help me understand, Kimiko. I’m pretty sure I can’t come close to understanding Kain’s reasoning, but I think I can accept why that is now.”

She looked at Kimiko and smiled weakly before looking over to the hanger. “I think I’ll just wait on the plane, I don’t just want to hang around here.” She said and started to make her way over.

“Whatever it was that Kain added, I know we’ll miss it, but not for long… It won’t be long…”

She directed those words towards Kimiko, though they were probably more for her own benefit than anything.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Eba0k1

The car was far too roomy for Kain’s small stature, but that didn’t mean he had anything to complain, the drive was comfortable and quiet; the countryside slid by the window effortlessly. All seemed well in the world for the moment until a familiar tune came onto the radio.

“Sound of the drums
Beatin’ in my heart
The thunder of guns
Tore me apart”

“Could you turn that off!?” Kain requested quite urgently.

“You’ve been – thu—“ *crackle*

“Not a fan?” The driver asked as he looked at Kain through the rearview mirror after he flicked the switch for the radio.

“Just not in the mood for it.” Kain replied.

The man looked at him inquisitively, but thought better of asking why.

But after a moment he spoke up again, “So where exactly are we headed? You got an address?”

Now it was Kain who looked inquisitively at the face reflecting off the mirror.

“What!?” The man could seemingly do no good, “I need to put it into the GPS.”

Kain sighed, he supposed there was that to consider, he did want to get to his father’s without delay and the GPS was probably useful to get to the farm; it was quite a bit off the beaten path.

“Alright…”

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame LQUnhE

The arrival in ol’ San Fran’ lifted Carla’s spirit. This was an environment she could relate to, a place filled with people she understood a lot better than the odd lot she had accompanying her. Of course, the fact that she was with them still made her somewhat of an outsider, and she got looks she otherwise never would have gotten. Perhaps she really was a step removed from the ordinary man on the street now.
The thought stung her, she didn’t want to fall in between two worlds, having a place in neither.

Still, she was surrounded by things that made sense to her, a place she could make her own. That was something most of the others would never be able to quite grasp, they were awkward onlookers. Even Lilly was more likely to call the world of the races her home than Carla’s, even if she grew up in it as well. But –and though it did them little good—they tried their best to at least fit in.

As soon as they all found their rooms Carla had a quick look around before using the bathroom to freshen up a little and headed right out the door again. Who knew for how long she’d be able to surround herself with ordinary people before the ‘circus’ got underway again. And so she was determined to spend some time down in the foyer and bask in the presence of utter normalcy. The good old humdrum.

“Oh. Uh, Aurora?” She said as she came across her in the hall, “I’m heading downstairs for a bit. You know, in case there’s something, you know where to find me…”

She hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should ask her to join her. Perhaps the kind of habit she retained from her normal life, because she wasn’t sure Aurora would care for the offer. She probably wouldn’t feel comfortable in the slightest. She was probably as poorly accustomed as her animals for this kind of environment and exposing her to more of it was perhaps not the best idea.
And she probably wanted to stay close to Ean.
Eh, there was something to be said for that as well. The mountainous man was more than charming, and he seemed sweet too.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame   Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Icon_minitimeTue Nov 11, 2014 5:39 pm

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame AuroraBannerAurora also noticed that her room was right next to Ean's with an adjoining door and she blushed as her thoughts ran rampant with what could become of that situation.  Smiling, she unpacked which didn't take long as she'd not brought much, choosing to pack lightly.  She lovingly stroked the bow, feeling it 'hum' back at her in response.  They were well and truly bonded.

Beau came up to her then, nudging her as he whined, making is displeasure known about being in the big city.  Aurora smiled down at him, stroking his massive head.

"I know, my friend.  I don't like being here anymore than you do but it is necessary thanks to Arawela and her disgusting father.  Let's go stretch our legs and check things out, shall we?"

But Beau made it clear that he would rather stay in the room instead of 'mingling' with the natives of the city.  She grinned down at him, nodding her head in understanding as she left the room, running into Carla, smiling at the young woman.  She listened to her explain where she was going, nodding her head to her.

"Okay, Carla.  Thank you for letting one of us know where you'll be", she said then laid a golden brown hand on Carla's pale skinned arm, "Carla.....if you ever feel like you need to talk to someone with all that is going on...please, don't hesitate to knock on my door.  I would gladly open it to you and would like it if we could be friends."  Her words were sincere as was the soft look in her deep brown eyes.  She turned away from her then and decided to just walk the hallway when she saw Sionn standing outside of Kimiko's room whom she'd yet to meet as well as the young Irish girl, but she could only see Sionn's face as Lilly's back was to her.

Sionn looked tired, dark circles beneath his eyes.  Her dark eyes filled with worry for him as she approached the two then she heard Lilly's voice filled with sadness, "Why Sionn?"  Aurora stopped, tilting her head as she chose then to step back, not wanting to intrude on something private, but she could feel the sadness pouring off the young Irish girl in waves and it tugged at her.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame The_li10

Lilly turned then, seeing Aurora standing there down the hall about fifteen feet from where they were standing and her odd eyes turned hard and dark, her hand moving to the hilt of one of her throwing knives.

"You!", the word coming out filled with such anger that Aurora took a step back.  "He was fine until you left him", Lilly said her voice low and filled with hate for the Native American woman.  "Look at him!!!  Look at what you've done to him!!  You don't deserve to be on the same plane as Sionn let alone in the same building!"

Her Irish temper came out full force then, her swirling eyes now swirling with various shades of reds and oranges.  Beau was going crazy behind the closed door, sensing the danger to Aurora as Lilly advanced on her.  Aurora took another step back, shaking her head at Lilly, her guilt stricken eyes leaving the girl and looking at Sionn.  Was Lilly right?  Was she the reason Sionn was looking as if he were ill?

"Lilly....listen to me.  What Sionn and I had was wonderful, but Sionn would never have been happy with me nor I with him.  He needs someone that has so much more to offer him.....someone who is more woman than I am or ever will be.  And, we are of two separate factions.....neither one of us would have remained happy.  I did what was best for us both."

But Lilly wasn't listening as she was now standing directly in front of Aurora.  The two women were similar in size, Aurora just barely taller than Lilly as they squared off.  Lilly hurting at what she'd witnessed and taking it out on Aurora, blaming the other woman for Sionn's condition.    She'd heard Sionn question Kimiko on whether or not she found him attractive and blamed Aurora for this as well.

"Because of you he questions himself now", she whispered to Aurora with barely controlled anger.  Her hand was still on the hilt of her knife and Aurora noticed it, careful not to rile the young woman anymore than she already was.  She raised guilt stricken eyes to Sionn's green ones, looking at him over Lily's head before looking back at the young Irish woman.  "He has no reason to question himself, Lily."

Aurora turned then, walking back to her room, not feeling like stretching her legs anymore.  If anything she felt sick, seeing Sionn's face up close and seeing just how bad he did look.  Along with Lily's words thrown at her she now wondered if she was to blame for Sionn being the way he was now.  She knew in her heart that he wouldn't have been happy with her in the long run nor she with him and she'd fallen deeply in love with Ean.  But she had a tender heart and right now that tender heart was taking everything Lily had said to her as truth.

Opening her door, she met Beau who was ready to lunge out the door but she stopped him, shaking her head at him as she stepped into the room, quietly closing her door behind her.

Lily turned back to Sionn, suddenly feeling deflated and defeated.  "I find you attractive, Sionn.  But clearly, like Aurora, I am not woman enough for you either."  Her once red and orange eyes were now a simple blue and the fight that was usually shining in them was gone.  It wouldn't stay gone, but for now, her young heart had taken a blow as she'd held out hope that Sionn would come to her.  She'd listened to all that he'd said to her back in Scotland.....especially the part about wanting to be sure that he could be true to someone.....but never had he said that he could never have a relationship and that was what had given her hope.  But Aurora saying how she was not woman enough for Sionn stuck in Lily's mind.  Clearly, neither was she.  She stood there, waiting to see if he would say anything....do anything before turning to walk away.  She wanted to give him a chance to redeem himself, hoping that he would do so.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame SionnBanner

Just as he was about to answer Lilly, Aurora came and Lilly turned on her like a mongoose hunting a cobra. Sionn simply watched, his legs feeling like lead had been poured through them and cooled against the floor, holding him so he could not move. He swayed slightly and the conversation between the two ladies ended almost as quickly as it had begun.

Kimiko had come to her door and watched, ready to intercede should it be necessary, but retreated when the situation calmed. As Lilly approached Sionn again he swayed gently and stared into her eyes, "Why?"

He was not asking her a question... he was repeating what she had said in the first place. "Why Sionn?" ...

His voice was soft and weak, "Why does a scorpion sting a hand... what does a frog stay in the pot that will boil him to death... why Lilly... because it is in my nature... it's in... my... na...."

He fell forward, folding like a pile of laundry poured from a basket and landed in a heap on the floor. Kimiko ran out and looked around as she heard the noise. Lizzy and Lexy came running too, Lizzy's hands covering her mouth as Lexy slid to Sionn's side, evaluating his condition. She looked up at Lilly and spoke, "What happened Lilly? Did you do something to him?"

Ean also came and knelt beside Sionn calmly. The Fara's face twitched gently, an almost mocking smile on his face though he was completely and totally passed out.

Ean looked at Lilly and spoke softly, "Tell us what happened lass, spare no detail. Before you do however, we all know that he has been off recently, so nobody is blaming you of anything."

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame   Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Icon_minitimeWed Nov 12, 2014 1:39 am

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame The_li10Lily cried out when Sionn crumpled to the floor, out cold.  When everyone came running out she took a step back, especially when the one called Lexy asked her if she'd done something to him.  She shook her head, her eyes swirling in various hues of greens and blues.  She turned them to the big man called Ean and took another step back when he told her to spare no details.  How could she tell him she'd verbally attacked his woman?  The spitfire of an Irish girl was suddenly feeling very much like the orphan she'd been staring at a group of nuns.

"I...I....", she stammered out, her hand instinctively going to the hilt of one of her blades, rubbing her fingers over it.  "I came oot tae see Kimiko and overheard the words spoken between she and Sionn.  When he came oot of her room, I...I....I asked him why, then she showed up", the last she said with hatred, speaking of Aurora.

She then explained everything that had happened, what had been said by both herself and Aurora and then what Sionn said before he'd crumpled, her Irish accent made thicker by her emotions as her eyes kept changing colors.  She saw the look of the MacGregors and took another step back.  Suddenly, she felt a pain in her chest as she looked down at Sionn laying there and shook her head again.

"He is wrong aboot himself......but I am not......she was right", she said, remembering what Aurora had said about not being woman enough for Sionn.  "She was no' woman enough for him an' neither am I", she whispered as her hand raise to cover where her heart lay.  Tears trailed down her cheeks, "She made him doubt himself", she growled out about Aurora, turning and running back to her own room before her temper ran off with her again, shutting her door and locking it.

She suddenly began throwing her blades at the wall, grouping them perfectly as tears rolled down her cheeks, her chest tightening even more until she could barely breathe.  Had she caused him harm without meaning to?

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame AuroraBanner
Aurora was sitting in her room on her bed staring out the window, unaware of what was going on out in the hall so deep in thought as she was.  Beau turned his head to the door, hearing the footsteps in the hall but his place was with Aurora and he laid his head onto her lap, feeling the tears drop onto his head.  He could feel her....and knew that Lily's words had cut deeper than she knew.  His charge had such a tender heart and that was her undoing every time.  He sighed, not knowing what to do this time.  He wanted to call for Ean but when he mentally sought him out he knew that he was helping Sionn so he pulled back and waited.

Aurora's thoughts were based on guilt, Lily's words repeating over and over in her head.  Had she caused Sionn to doubt himself?  Question himself and his attractiveness?  He'd looked horrible when she'd seen him standing in the hallway.  Was it her fault?  But she knew what she'd told Lily was true.  They wouldn't have been happy in the end and she'd fallen in love with Ean.  Just thinking about her Scotsman brought a small twitch of a smile to her lips but it quickly disappeared, her thoughts turning back to Sionn and the possible reason for him being in the condition she'd seen him in.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame   Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Icon_minitimeWed Nov 12, 2014 11:03 am

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame EanBanner

Ean watched the Irish lass, her body language and her face. She was certainly upset with Aurora, but she also telling the truth, at least as much as Ean was able to discern. As she went to her room and Aurora went to hers he looked at his sisters and then to Dietrich, “Help me with this load aye lad?”

He and Dietrich carefully picked up Sionn and got him to his room and into his bed. He stood and patted Dietrich on the shoulder, “Thanks for the assist there lad.” Turning to his sisters he looked at Lexy, “Can you do anything for him?”

Lexy exhaled softly and spoke, “Nothing more than natural sleep will bring him. Look at his face, the poor bloke is exhausted beyond measure.”

Ean looked at his old friend and then to Lexy, “Can you keep an eye on him?”

Lexy looked at him and smiled, “Of course brother.” It was clear in her face, Ean did not want to be here, he wanted to be with Aurora after the verbal assault she had just endured. Ean nodded and spoke, “OK, I’m gon’ta...” Lexy interrupted, “I know where your heart is Ean, go, she needs you.”

He smiled and turned, touching Elizabeth gently on the shoulder as he went into the hall and walked over, knocking softly on Aurora’s door. He didn’t wait for a response before he entered, the knock was more out of courtesy. He walked over and ruffled Beau on the top of the head, thanking the spirit animal for watching her while he was gone. He knelt in front of Aurora who was laying on her side and looked into her eyes, “I love you.”

As she exhaled a smile the light caught the moisture on her cheeks from her tears and he took a tissue from the box on the nightstand and began to dab her skin dry, “Sionn is in his room, so is Lilly.”

She nodded in response and he gently stroked the few strands of her raven colored hair that had fallen loose and tucked them behind her ear, “Don’t mind what she said, her heart is clearly smitten with him, and she is lashing out to blame someone. I am no saying that what she did was right by any means, but let’s give things some time to settle down before we rush to any judgments. If the air does no clear in the next day or so we will figure it out then, alright?”

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame KimikoBanner

Knowing how many daggers young Lilly was carrying, Kimiko waited outside her door until she heard the last one hit the wall. She knocked but there was no response, however this was something Kimiko was not willing to accept. She touched her finger to the lock, a small spark of energy leapt into the door, and the latch released. She stepped in and Lilly sprung to her feet.

She brought her hand up to calm her and spoke, “Little Flower, sit, I am your friend, and you NEED to talk to a friend right now.”

She knew that it was screaming inside Lilly to avoid, run, and bury all this, but Kimiko’s wise eyes remained vigilantly locked on Lilly’s and she walked across the room, sitting on a leather chair near the foot of the bed, just below where all the daggers were sticking out of the wall.

Without looking up she spoke, “I suppose the McGhee’s are going to loose any damage deposits they put on your room.”

It was a very rare show of humor, and she thought she saw Lilly stifle a smile, but she couldn’t be sure. She tilted her head slightly and spoke as she instinctually smoothed out the wrinkles of her thick, grey silk dress, “Please Little Flower, sit.”

As Lilly sat she spoke, “This will not sit well with the group, you know that, not unless it is fixed quickly. You have the Bow Bearer, her fiancé, and his sisters. That means you are already in a four on one situation if a conflict steams up from this. You understand that right?”

As Lilly hesitantly nodded Kimiko smiled, “How deeply are you in love with the Fara?”

There is was, the real question that needed to be asked, and Kimiko locked her eyes on Lilly, waiting for her answer.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Dietrich_zps57091a19
Dietrich and Ean picked up the bag of flesh that was Sionn he was surprised how light the man was as they took him back to his room wondering what impact this would have on the company it made him smile shockingly but it quickly was wiped off his face as Ean turned to thank him.

"Not any trouble you would try the same for me." Stressing the 'try' with a chuckle as he knew it would have its comedic value though passing out due to exhaustion was no laughing matter... apart from Kimiko as he suddenly remembered a small section of conversation of a wager that Sionn would pass out before they saw the druids he wondered if the Grey would want it in Yen or hard dollars.

Dietrich slowly left out the room leaving the sisters with the passed out Fara he was still smiling at what the argument had been about he wondered on the situation which was when he caught a snippet of conversation of four on one he frowned hearing it was Kimiko's voice he heard a very interesting question uttered. But told himself it wasn't his business and continued to move on as he wasn't the sneakiest person he would wager more money Kimiko had heard his steps slow infront of the door he began to whistle a rowing song as he decided he would collect the cello and clean the instrument and tune it incase his cover was ever questioned for the weapon hidden in the case.

It made him smile as his Eldest sister had been the one who insisted he learn more than just combat skills and forced interaction of the masses. Sliding into his room he moved to the large black case almost the same size as him as he opened it with large thumbs he frowned at the fact he had got the cello without so much as just a question of 'did they have?' he sighed as he set about plucking each string one at a time slowly feeling the echo of each note as he tuned it while staring out the window... "She would laugh if she saw me now." Plucking another long bass note from the string.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame ElizabethBanner

Elizabeth watched as Dietrich left and smiled warmly at him as he gave his last glance. She turned to Lexy who was rubbing the back of her hand against Sionn's forehead, "He is no feverish."

Elizabeth looked at Lexy and spoke, "Do you think it is just sleep deprivation?"

Lexy looked at Elizabeth and then back to Sionn, "There are no other symptoms. Sometimes people react to adverse situations in such ways Liz, but with things they way they are... who knows. I don't figure it's anything more than that though."

Lizzy smiled and Lexy looked at her, "What?"

With a shake of her head Elizabeth spoke, "Nothing, just that..., well I'm proud of you."

Lexy smiled and reached over, grabbing Elizabeths hand for a brief second and then returned her attention to Sionn.

"Will ya be needing anything from me?"

Lexy never looked up form Sionn and shook her head, "No, but thank you. I will call you if anything changes. For now I think we should just let him sleep."

Liz smiled and stood. As she smoothed her dress and pulled her light wool shawl over her shoulders she spoke, "I will go check on Dietrich and thank him for helping."

She turned and left the room, walking down the hall. She heard music coming from one of the rooms, Cello in fact. She furrowed her eyebrows curiously and walked as she tracked the source. With a smile of surprise she listened. The door had been left cracked open and she gently pushed it open as quietly as possible to not disturb his playing. She didn't chance stepping into the room, the melody was enchanting to say the least and selfishly she wanted to hear it out until its conclusion. As the notes lingered in the air, Dietrich's back to her, she began to feel herself as a child again, running through the damp bogs of the Highlands with her two older brothers, Ean and William. She could see William's face vividly in her mind, and the emerald green opened to her like a sea as she tried so hard to keep up with her much faster brothers. Finally she caught them when they stopped and William scoped her up, she was only 5, he was 15, but he was already massive and could easily lift her about. She giggled and laughed, her eyes lingering on his strong face.

She blinked, Dietrich had stopped playing and was facing her with a bearded smile. She blushed furiously and cleared her throat, "Excuse me... I'm sorry."

He motioned for her to come in and she did, leaving the door open, and sitting on a chair in his room. She looked at him and spoke, "It's always nice to be amazed... your song was beautiful, how long have you been playing?"

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Dietrich_zps57091a19
Dietrich had been nearing the end in honesty as he noticed the creak of a footstep his ear twitching as the bow lifted from the cello he had been meaning to only tune the instrument but old memories had got the nostalgia in full gear and he had played an old piece he rested the bow on his shoulder as he was grinning ear to ear practically seeing Liz who had mostly been impartial to the conversations and had an almost outward calm that affected others was now a beet red at being caught mid memory she apologized.

"Hardly need for that rare someone enjoys such pompous playing when the world has hip hop and god knows what else booming in the depths of an eardrum."

He smiled as she asked how long he had been playing as he tapped the wood of the neck as he thought about it slowly then shrugged it was so long since he had started and he hadn't shared much yet on his condition though he had mentioned the Templars Crusade as a personal experience... "Centuries?" A questionable answer as he wasn't sure it would satisfy her as he slowly began to retract the leg and slid the bow back into the case intrigued what had brought her down the corridor though as he would have guessed Sionn's condition would have them clamoring to speculate on his recovery.

"Do you play anything Elizabeth?" Using her full name out of respect after all he hadn't assessed what was appropriate though others seemed to shorten it to Lizzy as his cold greys held her gaze he had been tempted to ask what she was recalling but she was still smoothing creases from her dress and the raised shoulders he guessed it was an awkward memory or personnel he held his neutral footing of let it be unlike Kimiko's interrogative nature.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame ElizabethBanner

She smiled softly as he spoke, for his size he was capable of gentleness, it reminded her of her brother Ean. When he told her 'centuries' she took it in stride, it didn't seem to affect her in the least, almost as if she expected nothing less.

As he asked his question her head almost immediately began to shake side to side, "Me, heavens no. My brother... well both my brothers, play the pipes. I tinkered a wee bit with the drums at one point, but I think I made little more than a racket for my parents. No, I decided that I only wanted to be good at magic, so I pursue nothing else. Not a very well rounded approach to life I understand, but for now, I am happy with that choice."

She smiled as he watched her. She wasn't overly affectionate in her approach to people, with the exception of her siblings, but she was glad to have other friendly souls about, and she could see that in the Norseman. She cleared her throat and spoke, "So I came to thank you for helping with Sionn, obviously either you or my brother could have carried him alone, but in these instances it is good to be gentle."

She felt herself flush again. Was that the only reason she had come? To thank him? The words rolled around in her brain as she seemed to drift on them before snapping back and looking at him again. No men, no, she would not do that to herself, it caused too much distraction and worry. With a half nervous smile she sat in silence, hoping he wasn't some sort of mind reader as all these thoughts flew through her head like a wildfire.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame   Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Icon_minitimeWed Nov 12, 2014 3:11 pm

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame The_li10Lilly heard Kimiko's question as she sat down.  The question had her deep in thought immediately.  Her thoughts suddenly turned to Dietrich and how well they got along and she wondered.  But it was Sionn who kept pulling her back.  Sionn who kept invading her thoughts.  Sionn, who's face was always there.  Except when she was with Dietrich.  When she was with the Norseman, Sionn rarely invaded her thoughts.  She was too busy laughing and enjoying her time with the big man.  She sighed.

"I love Sionn, Kimiko.....I think I hae' since I was a wee lass.  But....he does'na love me.  An' even if he did...", she broke off as a tear slid down her cheek thinking about his words before he'd collapsed.  "He can'na be faithful.  Like he said before he passed out.....tis his nature."  She raised dull eyes to the Japanese woman who was her friend, "I would be with him in a heartbeat, Kimiko if he would hae' me.....but he willnae hae' me."

That was when Kimiko asked the question again, emphasizing the word deeply, "How deeply are you in love with the fara, Little Flower?"

Lilly sat there, not wanting to answer and give words to her feelings but she owed Kimiko her honesty.  Her chest still hurt and she still found it difficult to breathe.  "As deep as one can love another", she whispered.  "When he admitted tae' me tha' it was his nature it was as if he ripped me heart straight from me chest.  It still hurts to breathe.  It feels as if me heart is gone yet I feel it beating and wonder how it can."  She looked away from the Japanese woman, staring at the window, "It is no wonder he can'na love me.  Who would love an orphan?  Besides...as the American woman said to me, she was no' woman enough for him an' I know in me heart tha' neither am I."

With those few words she let Kimiko in a little further into her deepest hurts.  Things the nuns had said to her all those years in the orphanage as well as locking her away more often than not because of her eyes.  She angrily wiped at the tears that she couldn't seem to stop falling.

"It does'na matter anyway, Kimiko.  I hae' apologies tae be making.  No matter how deeply I be in love with Sionn it will never be enough tae hold him."

She smiled sadly at her friend, her eyes, so full of life just a little while ago with her temper were now dull and lifeless.  She had accepted the truth and that truth was almost more than she could bear.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame AuroraBanner

Aurora looked into her love's eyes as she lay there on the bed, nodding her head at his words and explanation for what Lilly had said to her.

"What if she is right, Ean?  Did I help cause this malady in Sionn?  There's no way we would have been happy together in the end and you are my true love...but to think that I may have something to do with what is wrong with him.....", another tear slid out of the corner of her eye, her tender heart breaking at the thought of causing harm to a friend and former love.

She went willingly into his arms when he wrapped them around her, climbing into the bed with her to hold her.  "Sometimes I wish I had a heart of stone, Ean', she whispered into his chest.  She chuckled then, "But if my heart were of stone I wouldn't know this wonderful love I feel for you.  So, maybe not of stone...but a little harder wouldn't hurt."  She sniffled, "Please tell me I didn't help do this to Sionn."

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame KimikoBanner

Kimiko listened, only asking the one follow up question. As Lilly drifted and looked out the window Kimiko stood again, walking over and sat beside the young Irish girl. Lilly turned her head, almost in surprise that Kimiko came so close to be right beside her. As she looked at Kimiko, the middle-aged Japanese woman removed a silk handkerchief from her belt and handed it to Lilly, "Do you think you are the only orphan in our midst Little Flower?"

Lilly looked at her quizzically, but then her eyes went wide and Kimiko nodded, "My brother and I were orphans, separated for years, it was only after we had been in the home for ten years but barely aged that the Lady Mistress started to get suspicious. She was in the process of having us expelled when a man showed up, stoic and proper, wishing to adopt us. He is the one who I now refer to as 'father'. My point is, if you wish to continue and lower yourself simply because you grew up different than 'normal', well you will have a long and lonely life. The fact is nobody knows you are an orphan unless you tell them, and even if they do find out otherwise and wish to judge you on that, well that's their issue not yours."

She took the handkerchief from Lilly's hand and in a motherly way dabbed the tears from Lilly's cheek and smiled, "From what I have seen, your life experience only makes you more suited for our lifestyle. We are wanderers, moving from place to place like nomads, we don't settle down or buy a house in suburbia to live out our lives tending gardens or building fences... No little flower, we are unique and special for a purpose."

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame The_li10Lily smiled sadly at Kimiko, knowing the woman was right as always. She nodded her head to her, little sniffles still escaping from her.

"Aye...ye be right, Kimiko. As for Sionn MacGhee, I am no longer going to be wishing for something tha' may never be. Tis no' fair tae' meself. An' I am ashamed of meself for attacking Aurora the way I did. She did'na deserve it."

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly, closing her eyes as one last tear slid down her cheek.

"Thank ye again, Kimiko. Ye always know what tae' say tae' me and ye are always right." She took another deep breath, clearly getting ready to say something that was not easy for her to say. She looked at Kimiko square in the eyes, her own still somewhat dull but life was returning to them. "Kimiko......I treasure our friendship. An' I thank ye for allowing me tae' be a friend to ye." She gave Kimiko a quick and tight hug, blushing afterwards as she looked down. "Ye are special tae' me and always will be. Thank ye for that." She stood then, "I have an apology tae be making." She made her way to the door, clearly intent on righting her wrong and doing it immediately.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame KimikoBanner

Kimiko sat with Lilly for as long as she needed, and when she gave the hug, Kimiko accepted it willingly, and happily.

Kimiko tucked the grey, silk handkerchief into Lilly's hand in such a way as to indicate that she was to keep it, and gave her a soft smile, "If we stopped wishing for things that might never be, then there would be nothing to wish for Little Flower."

She gave another warm smile and spoke, "It will be good to make amends now, the longer you wait will only make it more difficult."

She watched as Lilly left and then stood, walking over to the window and looking out over the Golden Gate Bridge again. She inhaled deeply and whispered to herself, "If only the coming storm were as calm as this..."

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame   Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Icon_minitimeThu Nov 13, 2014 3:15 am

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame The_li10Lilly stood outside Aurora's door for a full five minutes before she finally knocked.  She stepped back a step when Ean opened the door, intimidated by his size alone.  She noticed he didn't leave and she didn't want him to.....she wanted him to hear this as well as she looked to Aurora who was now sitting on the edge of the bed.  It was clear that she'd been crying but she looked straight at Lilly without any judgement in her brown eyes but definitely wary.

"Aurora....I owe ye a grave apology.  It was wrong o' me tae' verbally attack ye the way I did.  Sionn's condition is nae' your fault and it was wrong o' me to accuse ye o' that.  I hope ye can forgive me."

Aurora stood and walked over to the Irish girl smiling at her then she gave her a small hug.  "All is fine, Lilly and I understand."

Lilly was shocked at the woman's quickness to forgive her but simply nodded to her, saying a quick 'thank ye' and leaving the room.  She leaned against the closed door, closing her eyes which were swirling again with her confused emotions as a lone tear trailed down her pale cheek.

Pushing away from the door, she headed to Dietrich's room wondering if the big guy would like to roam the halls.....maybe see what mischief they could get into.....the huge Norseman with the tiny Irishwoman.  She smiled at the picture she had in her mind of what they must look like together when her stomach rumbled.  Perhaps Dietrich was hungry as well.

She reached his room, knocking on the door which wasn't completely latched.  It opened slightly and she slid in seeing Lizzy sitting across from Dietrich.  She immediately hung her head at the Scotswoman, feeling ashamed for what she'd done to her future sister-in-law.

"Umm...sorry, I didn't know ye had company, Dietrich.  I was just going to see if'n ye wanted to get a bit tae' eat but ye hae' company.  And...tis sorry I am for what I said tae' Aurora.  I...uhhhh....I apologized tae' her as well."

She turned then and left the room, feeling more than a little alone again. And she knew that she truly wasn't alone but right at that moment it was how she felt.  Sionn was passed out for whatever reason and it worried her but she needed to accept that he didn't want her...didn't want a relationship with her, she wasn't woman enough for him anyway and that was very clear to her in her eyes.  Kimiko, well....she was Kimiko and while she had become a very close friend, Lilly couldn't see her out and about too much, not in the big American city.  Torri was not among them and she knew that she'd pretty much burned the bridges with the MacGregors.  And Carla....well, Carla was Carla.  She'd laughed with Dietrich back in Scotland.  But he was visiting with Lizzy.  Sighing, she headed to the hotel restaurant to see what she could scrounge up, forgetting her glasses to hide her odd eyes.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame AuroraBanner

Aurora quietly shut the door after Lilly left turning to Ean and stepping into his waiting arms.  Even though Lilly had apologized her words still stung deep within Aurora's tender heart.

"Sometimes, Ean, I wonder if having a tender heart is all it's cracked up to be", she said as she rested her head against his chest.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame EanBanner

Ean smiled as Aurora forgave Lilly and he spoke softly, "You had nothing to do with Sionn's condition. You know Sionn is my friend, he has been for as long as I can remember. But Sionn... well Sionn has sown a life of bad seeds, and unfortunately seeds grow into mature plants. I don't know, I think of life in terms like that, if you want good things in your life you have to start years before with good decisions... at least that's what I do."

He walked over to her and smiled with a slight sparkle in his eye, "Like you for instance, I waited my whole life for the right woman who would understand me and love me, and so I did all I could to be in the right place when she came along, or should I say, when YOU came along."

He kissed her gently and then leaned back, "Now, with that little pat on the back out of the way, you, personally, did nothing to put Sionn in this condition. Sionn put himself in this position, and hopefully, he will be smart enough to realize it, and make some adjustments to avoid this in the future. Not everything that is going on for him is in his control, but a lot of it is, and I am no gon'ta apologize for having a relationship with you."

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame ElizabethBanner

Elizabeth was enjoying her conversation, and as Lilly walked in and spoke to her she stood and smiled warmly, "Lilly, I accept your apology, and I do forgive you. It's a stressful time for all of us."

She looked at Lilly, and her instincts went wild. It was clear that Lilly was completely head over heels for Sionn, and Elizabeth's soul was screaming at her to tell Lilly all about the womanizer, but she remained calm, and she hesitated. She barely knew Lilly, and felt at that moment it wasn't an appropriate conversation to have.

Lilly left and she turned to Dietrich with a soft smile. Suddenly something occurred to her, "You have been speaking with Lilly from time to tome aye?"

Dietrich nodded and she smiled, "She needs someone to talk to, and I don't think I am the best person right now, I have a ... history with Sionn and would only do more harm than good. You should go and talk to her, she could use the company."

Elizabeth's stomach swirled... that was it, she had made the choice, instinctually, with no thought, she had told him to go and spend his time with another woman. Her mind raced and she knew she didn't regret the decision, was it confusion? Was it longing for touch? Perhaps, perhaps not... but ultimately, at that moment, the first thought on her mind was she could go and study her spells, curled up with a hot cup of tea and in the quiet.

She walked over to Dietrich and spoke, "Really, go, talk to Lilly. If you wish to continue our conversation I will be in my room."

She smiled, touching him gently on the arm and left, pulling her shawl up tightly around her shoulders. She felt warm in the face, and happy in her heart... truly, wizardry, the pursuit of magic... these were the things she longed for and loved.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame LQUnhE

While Carla made her way to the elevator the commotion between Sionn, Lilly and Aurora began, and while she waited for the doors to open she wondered what the raised voices were all about and stared from the far end of the hall way. The argument seemed odd and out of place, what could suddenly have been the instigator for it? The lot of them might not have all been incredibly buddy-buddy, but she had felt no sign of on-edgedness or looming conflict within the group.
The moment she considered going back to perhaps help defuse the situation Aurora walked off and it left only Sionn and Lilly, and they were a lot quieter. So Carla decided that was most likely the end of it, though she was curious what their beef was, she preferred to leave these odd people to their own devices for the time being, while she returned to hers. She stepped into the elevator and as the doors closed she noticed Sionn swaying quite heavily. Had he loaded up on whiskey after their arrival and got out of his mind drunk? Was that the trigger for all this commotion? The doors sealed before Sionn hit the ground, but Carla figured it was probably just some pedestrian drunk drama, and it didn’t take one of the races to be familiar with how that goes.

When the doors opened back up Carla found a fairly empty ground floor and so she headed for one of the comfortable benches near the front so she could just bask in the normalcy of the hotel and the city just outside. She even managed to snag a Vogue from the table, which was a nice surprise, if nothing else she could read up but she also had something to pretend to read while really observing all these relatively simple folks.
But even though she sat there, in the middle of all that was normal, she didn’t feel like she was a part of it anymore. As she feared, she had become a step removed.
No. She was still an ordinary person. She was still Carla Thornsdale, psychology major with a minor in arts… Though maybe her break from that had become slightly more long term all of a sudden…
Why did she even think about that as an identifier?
Maybe if she had paid more attention in her psychology classes she’d know.

Ugh!
She didn’t just need to be among her kind, she needed to do normal things with normal people, maybe that would make her feel more connected again.
There was a Starbucks just down the street, her keen city slicker senses knew that much, she could see people with fuming cups hurriedly walking along the street. None of them risking a sip just yet. Still too hot, for that. Yes. Clearly she’d find the coffee shop within a minute. Two tops. Her coffee senses were never wrong!
She sure could go for a hazelnut macchiato right now.

She had only sat down the in the foyer a good five minutes ago, so the others probably weren’t going to miss her so soon anyway, it would be perfectly alright for her to step out and get herself a coffee. Wouldn’t even take five minutes anyway, they would be none the wiser, even if they cared in the first place.
Carla threw down the crappy Vogue she had already read anyway and marched out the front door decisively. Onward to Starbucks!
And indeed going through the same process as all these others was a refreshing feeling of belonging. To want the simple things everyone else wanted, to be stared at dryly by some uninspired youngster and eventually handed an over-priced cup of hot swill and a blueberry yogurt muffin with honey containing far too many calories for even 4 grown men. That was truly what it meant to be a part of ordinary society.
Glorious.

You know what she needed? She needed more opportunities to get in touch with her roots. She hadn’t really missed any of her facebooking, tweeting and imgurring, what with being swept away into all this saving the world business –though she could REALLY go for some cat gifs right now— and now that she stared at a phone shop while chewing down on a bite from her muffin she realized a new phone was perhaps the best way to stay in touch no matter where they went. Good thing the McGhee’s provided for all their necessities and a hefty allowance to boot. Clearly her mental wellbeing was important to their endeavors and she wouldn’t have to feel even a little guilty about splurging on the newest model iPhone and the required personalization for said iPhone.
Onward to the phone store!

Yes, overly enthusiastic hipster salesman, I do love Apple products. iOS is just the best, isn’t it? Now just hand me the damn pink phone so I can make a selfie of myself with my coffee and what’s left of this muffin. Nope, scratch that I’ll just finish that real quick. It’s really tasty. Could you throw this napkin away for me, please, mister hipster, sir? Thanks. It’ll just be me and my coffee in the phone store I guess. I’m sure my facebook friends will be thrilled to know I’m not actually dead.
Oh, the candlelit vigils she was about to disrupt, it nearly saddened her she was taking this opportunity from her faux friends to mourn her. Oh well.
Onward with business!

Back from the dead ready 2 save the world #whatsupbitches #heyo

That should cover twitter!

Now, of course she wasn’t about to actually divulge too much information about her activities. Geesh, she wasn’t that stupid! But at least she had a way to stay connected to what she once knew and held dear. With that in her pocket, she felt she could take on any amount of magical maniacs and not even flinch. No druid can compete with the power of cute cat gifs, everybody knew that!
She should totally binge on some of those as soon as she got back to the hotel lobby!
And with that thought she hastily walked back while sipping her hot coffee and keeping a close eye on any reactions on her social media.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Eba0k1

It had been a long drive and the afternoon was nearing its end when Kain stepped out of the car before the run-down fence surrounding the farmhouse. His driver, too stepped out.

“So what’s the deal here?” Kain asked him.

“I’m assigned as your driver. You tell me, sir.” He replied.

Kain looked at him squinting his eyes, he was still unsure what to think of this man he had lead to the doorstep of the house where he grew up. The home of many neglected sons and daughters, most of whom wished to remain that way.

“Will you be needing a ride from here?” The driver asked more specifically.

“I won’t be going anywhere anymore for today. So you shouldn’t loiter.”

“Of course. Shall I return in the morning?”

Kain sighed, “I suppose so…” He muttered.

He preferred to be rid of the man, but there weren’t that many options for getting off the farm again once the time came. And though he didn’t like relying on the driver, it was probably the quickest way to get back on track again.
The driver got back into the car and backed up, turned around and slowly rode back down the muddy path towards the main road.

Now that Kain turned his gaze away from the car and back to the farmhouse he couldn’t help but sigh again, he was not enjoying his day so far and it was unlikely to get much better now. And so he slowly walked up to the fence and fiddled with the sticky latch on the gate. How did that never get fixed? Once he was finally past the fence and walked past the chickens roaming the yard he noticed Sasha was already at the door.

“Hello, Sasha.” He said once she opened the door for him.

“Who was that?” She inquired immediately.

Kain shrugged, “Some driver the McGhee’s hired.”

“You shouldn’t have him brought here.”

“I didn’t want to, but I couldn’t fly and drive myself out here on such short notice myself.”

Sasha sighed, “I don’t like this, Kain.”

“I know, Sasha… But it’s good to see you.”

“It’s good to see you too, little brother.”

“How’s father doing?”

“He’s doing alright, but I know current events are weighing on him. Just don’t make too much of a fuss and I think it’ll be alright.”

“I’m not sure I can promise you that.” Kain sadly had to admit.

Sasha did not respond and simply lead Kain towards the kitchen, where three more ‘siblings’ were working on dinner.

“I’ll go downstairs and tell father you’re here.” Sasha said and left Kain in the kitchen.

He nodded and climbed on a chair, “Hey, guys, how’s things?”

Though the three of them merely looked over and continued peeling potatoes, until the youngest of the three spoke up.

“You’re not supposed to be here, Kain.”

Kain nodded, he understood that sentiment. He had said his goodbyes years ago, but times change, it seemed.

“It’s because of the druids, right?” The eldest now spoke up with the other two looking somewhat surprised.

“You heard about that, huh?” Kain said, “But that’s not what I’m here for. Not really.”

“Why are you back then?”

Kain sighed, “The same reason I left before… Punkie stuff…”

“But if that’s why you left…” The youngest clearly didn’t understand. But then again Kain didn’t really know why things went the way they went either.

“I need to ask father some things. He knows things few people do.”

“When he’s feeling well…” The youngest noted.

Clearly things weren’t quite the way they used to be. The farm seemed small, even to Kain. Small and old. Father still continued to shelter rejected Elar’uma, lost Fara and, of course, the odd homeless Punkie. But, now that Kain had seen part of the far greater picture of the races, it was clear the ones his father had taken in were just the lucky few. Many, many more fell through the cracks. Perhaps father had a reason for sheltering the ones he did, but since they came from all races and factions Kain had a hard time seeing it.
It made him doubt whether or not father was really this wise and powerful wizard he always thought he was. Somehow he expected more from his return home.
But perhaps father really was quite ill, far more ill than he had ever lead on. And perhaps has been for a long, long time. It certainly made Kain wonder.

Dietrich was stuck on conversation with Liz it seemed though enjoyable as it was she had a facination for magical stuff and his lack of 'knowledge' or 'experience' behind magic made it a difficult subject for Dietrich he thought he was saved when Lilly opened the door but alas Lilly took his choice of company and recent events lopsided... the mere mention of food made him grumble a little their last meal having been at the McGhee... excluding the many gingernut biscuits that were consumed at the Salt Lakes.

Lilly closed the door before he could respond though he quickly observed a internal conflict in Elizabeth as he smiled seeing her rationality won once again especially as she mentioned her history with Sionn he was ever so tempted to say. 'Does anyone not?' But stopped the words before they uttered from him as she told him to accompany Lilly. He nodded slowly as she seemed in a slight hurry to leave he tilted his head as he followed to the door sliding the cello case on his shoulder, where they split in different directions.

"I pray you enjoy your spellbook." He was halfway down the hallway to the elevator before she considered could he really read minds though bringing to a conclusion that she was normally reading her spellbook in most of her spare time it was a logical assumption, surely? Getting in the elevator and went down to the restaurant whistling the same tune he had just played on the cello.

He stepped out the elevator with a few passengers some shivering at the disgusting taste in music other smiling at the man's commitment to the song as he slowly made his way it wasn't hard to find Lilly as he placed the cello case against the table he looked to her reaching into a coat pocket he pulled a ludicrous set of aviators sunglasses and easily placing them on the bridge of her nose the size of them huge for his face rather than hers but then she remembered she had forgotten her own.

"I thought you liked not to draw attention to such things?" A waiter appeared at his shoulder before he could continue Dietrich ordering what seemed two of everything on the menu almost and a jug pitcher of beer even if they had to pour it from bottles instead of water then turning to her after his long order. "You ordered yet?" Smiling a little as she blinked questionably wondering if he really was going to eat all of what he had said on his order.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame The_li10Lilly smiled at Dietrich when he placed his sunglasses onto her pixie like face, the glasses way too big for her face as they were more for him but still.  Her heart actually warmed more towards at him at the fact that he'd been so considerate of her.

"Aye...I forgot me own in my haste to get something to eat", she said wondering if he knew the truth.  She'd forgotten her sunglasses due more to seeing him with Lizzy than what had happened with Aurora and Sionn.  Her eyes widened behind the dark glasses when he ordered enough for ten people.  The waiter himself was shocked as well but said nothing as he turned to Lilly, smiling at her in a very flirtatious manner, "And you miss?  I would imagine you don't eat enough to keep a bird going as tiny as you are."

Lilly, not sure how to reply to a man out and out flirting at her looked confused behind the dark glasses but kept quiet, ordering a beef Manhattan, hold the onion and mushrooms and a water to drink.  She sat there, pushing the too large glasses up onto her dainty nose wondering how much Dietrich knew that she'd done in the past hour.  She'd made a fool of herself and insulted people she barely knew.  Especially Aurora who seemed about the nicest woman she'd ever met in her life.  Sighing she took the glasses off, the swirling in her eyes having slowed considerably as her emotions had calmed leaving them a mixture of blue, green and brown.  She looked up at Dietrich, giving him a small smile.

"Elizabeth MacGregor seemed nice.  I'm glad they don't seem to hold grudges.  But thank ye for joining me", she said to him her voice sincere.  "I didn't want tae' eat alone and I would prefer tae your company tae anyone elses", she said to him with a genuine smile.  "Is there anything ye be liking tae' do after we eat?  Explore maybe?"

Aurora smiled up at Ean, "I wouldn't change anything either, Ean.  I can't nor will I regret meeting or having a relationship with Sionn because it brought me to you", she said love shining in her doe brown eyes.  "I know you are right and that I am not responsible for what has happened to Sionn but I still feel bad for him.  I can only hope that once he wakes, it will be with a new outlook and he will make better choices about his love life."

With that said, she stared into Ean's eyes, her arms snaking up around his neck as she pulled his lips to hers, pouring all of her love into that deep kiss.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame JohnnyBanner

As he brushed past the very attractive blond he turned around and spoke, “Pardon me.”

Carla turned, the kind of turn that suggested a rapid nod of acknowledgement was about all he was about to get. As she receded rapidly into the hotel lobby he knew his window was rapidly closing, “Excuse me.”

As Carla turned, this time lifting her eyes from her phone he smiled and bowed his head slightly, “Sorry about banging into you back there in the revolving door, I was wondering if maybe I could buy you a drink to make up for it?”

She lifted her coffee with a sarcastic smile and he lifted his eyebrows, thinking quickly he spoke, “Or perhaps I could just reimburse you for that one?”

He smiled, watching her, waiting for her response.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame LexyBanner

Lexy dapped Sionn’s forehead with the damp cloth and whispered, “Ya great ox of a man… what in heavens sake have ya done to yerself.

Dropping the washcloth in the ice bucket she leaned back in her chair and looked at him. She remembered him from her younger years as the object of her affection, all the lassies did, but now, he just looked hollow to her, grey and hollow. With the knowledge of who he was she had lost her affection for him. Learning just a couple months ago that he had even coerced her sister to sleep with him and then dropped her like a bad habit only embittered the taste she had once had for him.

With a sigh she looked out the window, as an August, and one who chose to heal, she needed to put such things aside, she needed to treat him as any other who needed her help.

Looking back however, she could not shake the feeling of anger in her stomach, his shallow, shuttered breathing only reflected her feelings towards him, feelings that she had not shared with anyone, or would share with anyone…

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame LQUnhE

Carla was attempting to find the latest in cat gifs, but it seemed her reentry into the social media business had conjured up a minor storm under her friends. Some of whom couldn’t find enough capital letters or exclamation marks to show both their surprise and probably fake joy, which was really all she expected to come from it, but then Jennifer came around… The gal of that girl! How dare she suggest one of the programming geeks had hacked her accounts and staged her resurrection to wreak havoc on the popular girls. If she wasn’t careful that discussion would completely hijack her posts. Damned I-envy-you-because-I’ve-got-no-cleavage-Jennifer. Find a good surgeon and stop being such a pain in my butt, would you!?

But then it appeared she barely rubbed against this guy while leaving the revolving door into the hotel. It really didn’t even register until he spoke up about it. But then again, she was a little preoccupied and it wasn’t unusual for people to start conversations with her out of the blue either. At least he was pretty cute, 80% of the time it was just some obnoxious fat balding guy perving on her or worse. In a sense it was just another thing that helped her feel like she was back in her old environment. So she was inclined to humor the guy. And though these offers were never quite as one sided as these men made them out to be at first glance, she was no fool, she knew how to get out of these situations ahead.
Poor fellow.

“Well, if you insist.” She said as she returned a warm smile.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame Eba0k1

When Sasha returned to the kitchen Kain immediately noticed she was shaking her head.

“Father is very tired, Kain.” She said and sat down at the table.

Kain sighed, this wasn’t going as planned, “I see…”

“It’s often like this.” She said, “But sometimes he perks up after dinner.”

Kain could tell by the way she said it, and the reaction from the others in the kitchen, that despite what she said he probably shouldn’t get his hopes up.

“Can I, like, maybe lend a hand or something?” Kain offered. He couldn’t help but feel the state of the farm was worsening with his father’s condition since he left. Though he wasn’t in any way responsible, there was still a nagging that made him want to do something.

“Thanks, little brother, but no.” Sasha said, “We’re alright. Just make yourself at home, I’ve got some more things to take care of but at least we’ll have a nice dinner together, alright?”

Kain was disappointed there was nothing he could do. It felt like there was so much that needed to be done, though Sasha was probably right that most of these things couldn’t be fixed by Kain just before dinner. Clearly it was Sasha who was keeping the farm together at this point. Perhaps there was a bit of pride getting in the way of accepting Kain’s help as well and he could respect that.

“I think I’ll go for a walk.” Kain decided and hopped from the chair.

“Don’t go too far.” Sasha said with a hint of worry.

“I still know my way around, dear sister.” He said and headed for the front door.

A walk around the premises seemed like a good idea to Kain. There were times where he’d hike through the woods with father, or scamper through the woods with his brothers and sisters, but this wasn’t the time for that. But getting some fresh air and a good feel for the current state of the farm felt right.
Nothing seemed to have really changed, aside from the cruel atrophy caused by the advancement of time. The barn’s paint job was falling off and the fencing had gotten rickety, but at least the crops stood tall and the livestock looked healthy. The place kept running, yes, but it could use a bit more attention to be sure.
But it wasn’t that surprising, with father sickly and so many mismatched children growing up on the farm, there were so many distractions and the farm suffered. As long as it served its purpose as a safe place to grow up without fear that was still a good thing.

When Kain returned from his stroll the thick smell of dinner surrounded the farmhouse. Finding his way to the long dinner table he found the family all up and about setting the table and working on the finishing touches for dinner. All Kain could do was stand back and watch, there was no room for him to do much in this whirlwind of activity. But he did get some warm smiles and a hi in with some of the family he had not yet seen.

Once all was ready and they all sat at the table Sasha spoke up, “It’s been a long time since we’ve had Kain at this table, but as I told you yesterday, he’s finally come back for a visit.”

“It’s nice to be back and quite a surprise to see how some of you have grown. I used to be able to look some of you in the eyes without having to hurt my neck…” Kain joked and there were smiles all around the table.

“And a couple of new faces, too. Meeting Kain for the very first time.” Sasha said, referring to three young ones on the far end of the table. Yes, life goes on. “Hopefully after dinner we can all catch up, but for now we should do something about our rumbling tummies. Dig in!”

Kain couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of the old fashion dinner free for all with pots and pans making their rounds around the table and arguments arising over portions that were swiftly dealt with by the elders scattered around the table. Sasha took a full plate, probably meant for father and left for a moment, but once she returned and everyone had started eating in earnest Kain couldn’t help but wonder.

“Say, where’s Stan?” He asked Sasha.

“Stanley’s in Italy.” She said and quickly stuffed a piece of meat in her mouth, “Together with Rose.”

“The two of them, eh?”

“Not like that.” Sasha quickly stopped him from getting any ideas.

“No?” None of them were really related after all, it was far from surprising to find any of them getting romantically involved.

“Giovanni went to Australia.” Sasha continued while mashing her potatoes.

“He’s studying chemistry.” Another said. Though conversations were ongoing all around the long table clearly Kain’s return did have many paying close attention.

“Studying chemistry in Australia? That’s a long way from home!” Kain thought.

“Being homeschooled makes it a bit of a challenge to find a good school. But father called in a favor.” Sasha explained.

“He always was bright.” Kain knew.

“He’s doing very well.” Sasha told him.

“Marjorie went to her uncle.” Another who was listening in told Kain.

“What? How did that happen?” Kain wanted to know, it was unusual for one of them to return to their own families.

“Her uncle managed to clear her parent’s name. When we found out we got in contact with him and reunited him with his neice.” Sasha said.

“Lucky girl.”

“They’re happy.”

There were so many things Kain had missed out on, he spent most of dinner hearing about the accomplishments of his brothers and sisters. And once everyone was excused from the table and they retired to the living room it was Kain who told them about what he had been up to. Of course, he left out his most recent experiences.
While he told his stories he noticed Sasha leaving. He wondered if she was checking up on father. Though Kain enjoyed being back and telling his stories, he really hoped father was up for speaking with him sooner rather than later.

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame JohnnyBanner

His smile was infectious, and he gestured, "Come on... it's five o'clock somewhere right?"

The fact was, it was lunch time, and who could argue with a cocktail, she seemed like the type of gal who wouldn't. As the two of them walked along the sidewalk he didn't waste any time, "I'm Johnny, Johnny Portsman. I don't live here, I suspect you don't either based on both of us staying in a hotel, but I have been wrong before."

He was charming for sure, and dressed in very fine attire, the kind of clothing one didn't buy at Men's Warehouse or even some swanky upper class place. Everything looked custom tailored, and not a thread, fold or crease was out of place. Even his scarf was wrapped perfectly and pinned in the middle to hold it in place. The pin was about the size of a quarter and looked like a wolfs head, and clearly made of gold.

"Here, this place is pretty nice, not too stuffy and quieter than some of the other places around here."

He opened the door and let Carla go in before him. As he followed the host stepped forward and spoke politely, "Mr. Portsman, nice to have you back again."

Johnny smiled and nodded, "Thank you Tom. My friend and I would like a quiet booth where we can talk comfortably."

The man smiled and gestured for them to follow him, taking them to a comfortable booth near the back corner of the establishment. As they walked through Carla would be able to tell this was an expensive place. The bar was stocked with only top shelf quality liquor bottles, and the atmosphere was warm and smelled of well worn leather and fine wood. Soft music was playing from invisible speakers and all the wait staff were dressed in perfectly pressed uniforms. Tom stopped and motioned to a round booth, the plush leather almost begged to be sat upon and he turned to Carla, "May I take your coat Ma'am?"

Ch 10 - Moth to the Flame LQUnhE

Once Carla stopped paying attention to her phone and tucked it in her coat it became clear to her that this man strayed far from the average bloke on the street. Clearly he put quite some effort in both his appearance and manners, both of which outstanding. And though she was perfectly content with her coffee, the offer for something a little more sophisticated was appreciated. And as they walked, and Johnny talked, she made short work of what remained of her coffee.
Goodbye hazelnut macchiato, hello cosmopolitan!

Looking at Johnny Carla thought it was surprising he approached her, these kinds of things never happened to her. Of course, she always believed this is how every handsome man should treat her, but the simple fact was they never did. Perhaps she was lucky or perhaps the west coast was simply more appreciating of her rare inner and outer beauty. Could be anything, really, but who cared!

“You certainly may.” Carla said as she turned her back to Johnny so he might take her coat. “For someone who doesn’t live here you sure know your way around, Johnny. What brings you to San Francisco, business or pleasure?”
