Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons CeriBanner

"Focus Pela, focus and remember the spell."

Pela sat and was breathing heavy, she never seemed to sweat but Ceridwyn could only imagine that if the young girl was capable she would be doing so now. Ceridwyn walked over and looked down at Pela, "The key to arcane casting is memorizing and retaining the spells in your book. Once you cast it, it is gone and you have to relearn it, you must stop using your emotions and start using your thoughts. If we don't get you back to basics and then build you back up to energizing your spells with your emotions you may end up killing yourself."

Pela looked up at her, her face was a mix of anger and understanding. Ceridwyn nodded softly and extended her hand helping Pela stand, "I know I am being hard on you, but I assure you in the end it is for your own good. If you allow emotion to overshadow your casting in a life or death situation you will eventually loose. I know that casting that way has gotten you this far but take it from someone who used to cast the exact same way, it will harm you in the end. If you allow the emotions of your body to take control then you will loose the ability to STOP the spell, you will end up killing your own allies, and potentially yourself. The magic I am teaching you is much more powerful than what you have been doing all your life, and with more power comes more danger."

Pela nodded, she had come along way when it came to being patient but Ceridwyn could see it in her eyes when she was done for the day. She half smiled and spoke softly, "That is enough for today, go take a hot bath with salts to relieve the aches in your muscles, the Elves arrive in an hour so we will need to be at the portal to greet them. After that you can return to your quarters and rest and re-memorize your spells."

Pela nodded and turned to leave, Ceridwyn spoke again, "Pela." The young girl turned and saw Ceridwyn's smile, "Just so you know, you ARE doing extremely well, better than most students your age."

Pela left and Ceridwyn turned to Rayann who had been sitting off to the side. Myth had stayed in Silvanost to prepare the Elves for arrival through the portal they had created between Heartlund and Silvanost. Everyday Rayann had managed to endure the ache of distance between herself and Myth, but today she was glowing a little, for today at noon the Prince arrived with the first of the Elven troops. Ceridwyn walked over, her face was a mix of a smile and concern. As Pela left the room she spoke softly to Rayann as she sat, "I worry about her at times, but over all I think she is doing very well. She is learning to control her emotions but that last spell put her on her butt because she lost focus. Luckily I am dampening the area with my own spells to counteract the effects of her emotions, but my goodness Rayann, the girl has an amazing affinity for magic. I have said it before, but the only person I have ever seen that can rival her is Kali, and even that will be a dead even match once once Pela has more training under her robes."

Ceridwyn saw the ever so brief dip in Rayann's eyes as she mentioned Kali and put her hand on top of her friends, "We need to be able to say her name. She is still your daughter."

Rayann nodded softly and Ceridwyn smiled, "How about we focus on the fact that your beloved Prince arrives in one hour! My understanding is that he is bringing the Elven Rangers first, and the rest of the soldiers will start arriving shortly after over the next few days. Rose has given them the forests around the whole of the Keep as their staging and sleeping areas, it will give them some comfort to be in the trees, not to mention a formidable place to be she anyone attack, their bows will sing from the treetops."

Ceridwyn stood and held out her hand, "Come, let's go to the portal and make sure everything is ready for their arrival."

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Sirtrystan

Trystan walked out the main gate and to the grounds that had been established for Keataras classes. She was there, but alone this morning. The classes had been called off today due to the arrival of the first wave of Elven troops, but Keatara was bundling the weapons and making sure everything was prepared for tomorrow when the classes would resume. As Trystan walked up he spoke, "Good morrow Keatara. It is good to see you today."

He looked around with a bright smile on his face, "It appears that everything is going very well, the children all seem to love your classes and I hear them speaking about it in the streets at night when I am doing my patrol checks. You have quite a gift for teaching, have you done this sort of thing before?"

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Pela

Since the return to Heartlund form Silvanost had been intense for Pela. After her evening with Olwa, something seemed to have changed within her. Not necessarily for the worse either. She began to look at life in a different way. The young man said some things that gave her food for thought and she took his words to heart. When she wasn’t learning from Ceridwyn or Rayann, she was spending more time with others her own age and even slipping quietly into the children’s area to watch Keatara work with the children. The woman had even talked to her at length about different things Pela questioned her about. It was important to get different perspectives on the same subject and Pela would always spend her nights before going to sleep pondering over everything she learned the day before.

As she studied with the mages, she would focus on her task at hand but her mind would stray from time to time to Olwa and she would find herself missing him. That’s when her emotions would get the better of her and she would start making mistakes. Like today. All morning she’d remained focused on her lessons but the closer it got to the noon hour, the more difficult it became for her to remain so. She hadn’t seen Olwa since that night and she was certain it would be a long time before she saw him again. But just knowing his kin were arriving soon was enough to break her concentration. To her, if she were close to more of his kind, then she was closer to him in a sense.

She was excelling, that much was obvious, but when she grew tired and her emotions began to surface even more, her ability to control her spells or defend against the ones Rayann and Ceri sent to her was a wild card at best. She didn’t mean to do it. It just….happened. And as she picked herself up off the ground after Ceri sent her sprawling backwards, she brushed herself off furrowing her brows. She wasn’t upset at Ceri in the least but her frustration at herself was at an all time high.

As Ceri dimissed her. Pela nodded and turned with her shoulders slightly drooped. When Ceri called to her and gave her the compliment, Pela couldn’t help but smile and nod.

"Thank you, Ceridwyn."

As she walked away from the duo, her thoughts were nonstop. She HAD to learn to control her emotions. If she didn’t, like Ceri said, she’d destroy herself and those around her. Friend and foe alike. Perhaps a soak in the tub as Ceri suggested would do her good. But not as hot as Ceri suggested. Pela could imagine herself melting like the winter snow if she tried to sink into a hot bath. The thought horrified her. Still, a soak in the tub did sound like the perfect prescription for what ailed her.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons RayannRed

Rayann sat off to the side and watched Ceri work with Pela. IT was decided after they returned from Silvanost to alternate days with the girl, that way she would get even exposure with the two different kinds of magic users. Rayann saw a change in Pela after they returned from Silvanost and she knew it had to do with the young Elf Ceridwyn told her about Pela was out on the balcony with. But Rayann also noticed emotions were getting easier for the young woman to recognize and understand. She still had a long way to go but there was no doubt what ever happened between Pela and the Elf had triggered something in Pela to allow for her humanity to surface.

As Pela was dismissed and Ceri came over to sit next to her, Rayann smiled at her friend. As she talked about Pela and mentioned Kali’s name, Rayann’s smile faded slightly. As Ceri spoke of Kali, Rayann nodded and looked at her friend.

”I know, Ceri. But that doesn’t mean I don’t miss her terribly. Not a day goes by that I doh’t pray to the Gods for the return of my daughter. But I know there is a reason this has happened. I only pray I find out why soon. But to think I will have to face off against her in a battle saddens me most of all. And I would be lying if I said it didn’t frighten me just a little.”

Squeezing Ceri’s hand, she smiled and nodded when her friend suggested they focus on the fact Myth was arriving today with the first wave of the Elven forces. Nodding, she was more than happy to get up and walk to the portal with Ceri. AS they walked, she talked to her friend

”Rose was wise in making that decision. She knows it isn’t going to be easy for the Elves to be away from Silvanost without SOME semblance of their home. And I can imagine Myth is ready to get away from the stiff rigors of court. But I also know it’s harder for him to leave Shaer behind as well. I could see the look in his eyes when he was with his son. But I also know he knows his parents are taking good care of their grandson. I pray we will be able to see him again. Soon.”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons CeriBanner

Ceri listened as she walked with Rayann, not saying much, allowing Rayann to speak her mind, to work through the obvious sadness of not being with her son, and of the wisdom of the Solamic leadership.

As they walked up towards the portal the guards saluted and Ceridwyn spoke, "Come now, none of that, we are not in your ranks or your commanders."

The soldier looked at her quizzically, he was new to this guard duty, Trystan had been shuffling the men around a lot lately in an attempt to avoid the boredom that could come from doing the same duties every single day. Many of the soldiers were on an assignment for at most a week and then they were moved to someplace else in the Keep. This soldier wore the colors of Sir Ordin, apparently Trystan had also been starting to bring in soldiers not housed in the Keep to the Keeps duties, this was a good thing, it got the soldiers knowing one another.

Ceridwyn smiled again and spoke, "I am Ceridwyn Bol Shoraes, you may call me Ceridwyn, this is Rayann." The soldier spoke, "It is a pleasure to meet you both. Are the Elves still slated to arrive at noon?"

"That is correct," Ceridwyn said with a smile, "We will need to get all these people back, they will most likely arrive quietly, and lead by the Prince I would imagine. Aeolis and I will be here to greet them, as will Rayann. We are not sure if Pela will make it, she has been practicing all morning and the Art can take quite a bit out of you."

He wasn't quite sure what she meant by 'the art', but he assumed it meant magic and simply nodded. Ceridwyn continued, "Rayann and I have come to check the portal and insure that all is as it needs to be, Prince Myth'alas will give the command on the other end and knows the pass phrase to activate the portal. We will know he is coming but the outer frame of this portal, it will begin to glow a bright blue and purple and the glassy surface will begin to swirl. Do you understand?"

The soldier nodded and Ceridwyn continued, "Good. I would suggest getting all these people back and getting more soldiers to create a perimeter, my guess is about 200 Elves will be arriving and they will need room to keep moving or the Elves coming in behind them will stack up."

He nodded again and spoke to one of the soldiers a few meters away, "Greiss, go get two dozen more, we need to create a perimeter."

Ceridwyn smiled and touched the man on his gauntleted forearm, "Thank you."

The soldiers eyes sparkled slightly at her touch, as most human men would in the presence of an elf. He had managed to restrain himself but at her touch his face cracked and he showed his admiration for her Elven beauty. He simply stared and Ceridwyn finally broke the silence, "That will be all good sir."

The man seemed to snap back to reality and cleared his throat, "Uhh... yes Ceridwym, yes."

He moved and started to assemble the soldiers who were already arriving and Ceridwyn turned to look at Rayann with a slight roll of her eyes. Then her face suddenly lit up as she looked over Rayann's shoulder, she spoke with a sparkle in her voice, "Mel'amine!" She went past Rayann, touching her on the shoulder to not do so in a rude fashion, and embraced Aeolis who had just arrived. She embraced him lovingly and pressed her cheek into his leather armored chest, "It has been a long morning, but all is forgotten now that you are here."

PostSubject: Re: Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons   Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Icon_minitimeFri Jul 01, 2011 12:48 pm

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Color_10Keatara smiled up at Trystan, "Aye, the children are a joy to be around. I used to watch me nieces and nephews when me brothers who were mated would be out in the fields with Da." Her green eyes turned haunted then as she remembered that day and the carnage. She turned away from him, hiding the moisture that was building in her expressive eyes as her hand automatically went to her scarred right eye. Would she ever forget? Would her nightmares constantly plague her? She took a deep breath then, also trying to quell the feeling of guilt for not leaving and continuing her search for Tynen. She liked it here. She loved the children and her new friends. And, she was beginning to think that Old Madge was right and Tynen being alive was a long shot. After a few moments, she turned back to Trystan her eyes still filled with sadness but a smile on her face. "I have noticed that there has been little problems with the children now within the walls since the classes have begun. They didn't like it at first, but they also have had to learn self-control and respect." She finished tying off her bundle of training weapons and began to walk towards the storage shed that the knights had built for her to store her training tools. She chuckled when she remembered how Gideon had looked as he'd helped with the building of it, showing off his physique, making her constantly blush, which she did again just thinking about it. She'd not gotten to really. talk to him or spend any time with him, but he'd cast her smiles, letting her know that he was watching her. She was grateful to Tanjee for the help she was giving her in building her self-confidence where Gideon was concerned.

They reached the sturdy building where Keatara quickly put away the bundle of training weapons. Inside the small storage shed it was neat and orderly, Keatara having made sure that everything had it's place and was easy to get to. She demanded that the children help her bring them out and put them away properly. As she walked out, closing the door and shutting the shed up tight, she turned to Trystan.

"Sir Trystan...I was thinking. I know a little about healing and I think it would be a good thing for the children to learn as well. What if they are separated during an attack or the only ones around when a loved one is injured. They would be able to take care of the injury until aid arrived. I could go to the woods, when it be safe of course, and gather what I would need, even growing starts so as not to deplete anything from the healers and the children would learn what herbs do what and how to be making poultices and salves. I have me own mortar and pestle and could also show them the proper way to bandage a wound. What do you say, Sir Trystan?"

PostSubject: Re: Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons   Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Icon_minitimeFri Jul 01, 2011 1:05 pm

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons RayannRed

Rayann loved to watch Ceri interact with the Knights. She was no fool as to what her friend was doing but to see her in action was truly something to behold. Her friend would never use her natural beauty to manipulate anyone but, as Rayann was famous for saying, it was far easier to use sugar than vinegar to get what you wanted. And no one was better at it than Ceridwyn Bol Shoraes. As the soldier practically melted right before her eyes, Rayann chuckled softly to herself and shook her head as she sent a missive to her friend’s mind.

~I’m so glad you aren’t on the opposing side, Ceri. You’d have the Dark Queens armies eating out of the palm of your hands and we’d ALL be doomed then.~

When she saw Ceri’s face light up the way it did, she knew why even before Ceri spoke a word. Turning to watch her friend with the love of her life, she couldn’t help but sigh softly and chuckle again.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Aeolis

Aeolis let out a slight OOF when Ceri came to him. Of course it was all for show as the Elfess was light as the feathers on his arrows. Wrapping his arms lovingly around her, he drew her into him and hugged her tight inhaling deeply the scent of her and whispering in her ear in their native language.

”Heart of my heart….it is good to see you too, mel’amine.”

Letting his fingers run through her hair before reluctantly releasing her, he stepped back slightly and smiled lovingly at her. When she returned she seemed…changed. Like a burden had been removed from her shoulders. She had always been affectionate before but when she returned, it was almost as though she couldn’t be affectionate enough. And of course Aeolis wasn’t complaining in the least.

As he saw the look from some of the guards that were starting to gather, he cleared his throat softly then gave them a stern look and nodded curtly. Looking at Cer, though, his look softened considerably. He was dressed in his Royal Guard armor and in the center of his leather breast plate was carved the insignia of the Royal Guard the intertwined with the symbol of the Silvanesti. On the shoulders of the leather were markings of his Captain’s rank within the Guard. Beneath the leather breast plate he wore a dark green , sleeveless tunic. Dark brown, deer skin leggings were tucked into his soft, high boots. His bow and quiver of arrows were slung over his shoulders and rested on his back.

He looked over at Rayann and smiled, nodding his head.

”Greetings, Princess. The hour grows near when your husband will be with you again. I can only imagine how happy you will be.”

Rayann smiled and nodded feeling her cheeks grow warm. She still wasn’t used to being addressed as royalty but it was her title. Even thought she would prefer to be called plain old ‘Rayann’.

”I dare say my enthusiasm will match Ceri’s but I will have to refrain from such displays in public. I shall certainly greet him thusly when we are in private.”

Aeolis feigned concern.

”Mayhap I should warn him ahead of time so he is prepared.”

He grinned mischievously then.

”No. Best he be surprised. The affect is much better that way.”

Rayann laughed softly and nodded.

”Indeed.

Aeolis looked around then back at Ceri.

”Where is the youngling? Does she not wish to see what she helped create in use?”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Sirtrystan

Trystan listened to Keatara and could see the sadness in her eyes over her losses in this life. He could relate, he had known many brave men who were like family that had been killed in the last year, and the one that hurt the most, Kali, walking off into the sphere... that one hurt the most. He inhaled deeply and buried his feelings as he looked back up at her.

As she spoke of teaching the children healing from herbs he could only chuckle lightly and shook his head, "You will turn them all into Rangers yet. I think that learning herbology and botany will serve anyone well, I think it's a great idea."

He smiled and then turned as he heard the crier announce it was 11:30. He turned back to Keatara and spoke, "I need to get going, the Elven Prince and the first wave of their soldiers are arriving in thirty minutes. Would you care to come and stand with Aeolis as they come through the portal? I think to give you a place of honor among the arrival welcoming party is the least I can do after all you have done for the kids."

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons CeriBanner

Ceridwyn turned at Rayann's missive and rolled her eyes in jest at her friends missive sending a response with a wink, ~ "Shut up" ~

As she was reunited with Aeolis after a long morning his words were a comfort and a welcome rest from the hectic schedule. She whispered to him as he stood before her, "Might I say Aeolis, you look dashing in your royal uniform."

She winked and then walked to Rayann's side, seeing the look on Rayann's face as Aeolis referred to her as 'Princess', "Get used to it kiddo, a Princess is what you are."

Rayann turned and looked at Ceridwyn with shock after the sarcastic and playful comment and Ceridwyn simply shrugged as she flashed her same infectious smile, "It is what it is my friend."

She turned and looked at Aeolis as he mentioned Pela and Ceridwyn spoke, "She has been given time to take a bath and clean up. If she decides to skip the welcome it is forgivable, she had a rougher morning than usual, but she is making good progress."

She walked back over to Aeolis and slipped her elbow behind his, locking their arms together, doing so almost unconsciously. Since her time at Silvanost when she was able to truly allow the past to blow away like autumn leaves she had felt a new fire for Aeolis, and her affection towards him was more intense than it had ever been, she was able to truly love him, with all her heart and with no restraints.

The crier called 11:30 and she turned to look at Rayann, "Well, there's our song my friend, shall we dance?"

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Color_10Keatara smiled, the sadness lifting some from her eyes as she nodded her head to Trystan, "Aye...I be glad that you agree, Sir Trystan and being a Ranger is not so bad a thing", she said with a smile, "As soon as things be calming down from the arrival of the Elven Prince and his soldiers, I will make ready to head out to gather what I will need to begin that part of my teachings as well." Upon his invitation of accompanying him as well as a place of honor, she looked uncomfortable. "I am honored that you think of me so highly, but I am just doing what I love, Sir Trystan. I have never been in the presence of royalty and would be sorely mortified if I embarrassed you or the others with my lack of knowledge."

At Trystan's gentle smile, she looked away. He reminded her so much of her eldest brother that sometimes it was painful for Syrus had been a lot like the knight that stood before her. It was coming upon the anniversary of her family's slaughter and she was finding it even more difficult this year to deal with things. Possibly because she was feeling secure now where as the rest of her family, save Tynen, were gone. Mentally, she sighed, knowing that her family would not want it any other way for her.

"Sir Trystan...will Sir Gideon be there?" This she asked in a shy manner, wondering if it wouldn't be such a bad thing to go.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons RayannRed

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Aeolis

”As if you needed to ask.”

Rayann was already moving into position. As Aeolis looked to the gathered Knights, he instructed them to make a wide path for the Elves to move through. With so many Elves arriving through the portal he needed to make sure they would have sufficient room to keep moving so a bottle neck was not formed causing a back up on the other end.

Rayann took one last look at her robes to make sure she was presentable and saw the way Ceri was looking at her. Scrunching up her nose, she sent the same message to her friend she had received in kind just moments earlier.

~Shut up~

Aeolis took a deep breath and let it out slowly as he stood next to Ceri. Movement caught his eye and he looked to see Trystan walking with Keatara behind him. As Trystan explained his invitation to Keatara, Aeolis smiled broadly and nodded.

”Indeed. I would be honored is she could stand beside my as my brothers and sisters arrive.”

A rush of blue caught ever one’s attention as Tanjee came rushing up and stood next to Keatara. When Trystan looked down at her, she grinned.

”You thought I would miss such a monumental occasion and not be properly dressed?”

Wearing the delicately embroidered robes of Mishakal, Tanjee looked every bit the cleric she was. Gone were her usual ranger like clothing and now she was dressed in a pale blue dress that seemed to accentuate her curves with the same delicate, silver threading of her robe. Her strawberry blonde hair was pulled back and braided in a single plait that started on top of her head and ended between her shoulder blades.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Healer

As Trystan stood next to Aeolis on the opposite side Keatara stood they all prepared for the top of the hour for the arrival of the Elves.

Rayann and Ceri were making last minute preparations for the opening of the portal and had just taken up their positions when Pela walked into the guarded area quietly. When Ceri and Rayann looked over at her they would see she had indeed taken the bath Ceri suggested. Her hair was still damp but curled into a bun at the crown of her head but a few locks had escaped and framed her face in lazy curls. She was wearing a gray tunic and black leggings beneath the gray robes Ceri had given to her. Like her white and red counterparts, she was there in official magi capacity. She looked at both magi with a questioning gaze.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Pela

”May I?”

Rayann glanced quickly at Ceri and they both had the same look on their faces. Rayann looked to Pela then and smiled, nodding.

”Of course.”

As the bells began to ring out the noon hour, the three magi stood ready. Pela in the center, Ceri to the left and Rayann to the right. As a faint glow began to appear on the frozen archway, Pela knew this was the signal form the other side, they were ready. Her ice blue eyes focused on the beautiful archway and she began to chant the spidery words of magic. The archway began to glow brighter and brighter and the light began to =bleed into the open space between then arches.

Pela slowly began to lift her hands as they began to glow. As she still chanted the words, she could now hear the voices of Ceri and Rayann joining her. The pull of the arcane magic around her was starting to grow rapidly and as she stood before the archway she felt the arcane magic pulsating through her body. She loved this feeling and it made her want to have this sensation more and more but she was wise enough to know too much was not good either.

Finally the light burst forth showering all three magi in it’ bright glow. Through the portal things began to focus and when everything was clearly visible, they would see the Elves on the other side with Myth standing there ready to lead them through. Pela stood statue still as she helped hold the portal open with Ceri and Rayann. It was as though she were in a trance like state as her ice blue eyes stared straight ahead.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Color_10Keatara had never seen anything like this in her life. She smiled at Tanjee, thinking how beautiful her friend looked and then looked down at her plain, ranger like wardrobe. Even Aeolis was in his dress uniform. She felt rather underdressed but stood next to her friends with her held high. She smiled broadly at Aeolis' comment of him being honored to have her stand next to him. She'd made two new wonderful friends and she wouldn't embarrass them.

"How do I greet them, Tanjee?", she whispered. "I've never in my life met royalty of any kind before."

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Healer

Tanjee smiled at her friend and touched her hand gently with her own.

”Do not worry about a thing, Keatrara. Just follow my lead and you will do just fine. The Elves are really not much different than humans. You will see soon enough.”

A the portal was opened fully she looked into the portal beyond ans saw her homeland. A sudden wave of homesickness washed over her but she swallowed it down. She would be back there soon enough. Perhaps even Kwinn will be on his way back through her lands and she can see him then as well. With that thought in mind, she smiled and waited for her Prince to lead the way for her people to move thorugh the portal.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons SirOrdin

Sir Ordin had arrived with Commander Rose just a few moments before the crier announced noon. They were talking quietly, his five generals and Roses generals stood in a broad semicericle in front of them. They stood side by side on an elevated platform and a path had been arranged for Myth to come to them when he stepped through. Though they had all been working together for months there was some pomp and circumstance necessary, this was the first time in hundreds of years that a massive movement of Silvanesti would be standing on Solamic soil, and the Knights were prepared to accept them warmly.

The two other heads of the Order of the Crown and Order of the Sword were standing nearby in a position to create a secondary welcoming line where the commanders and leaders of the Elven warriors could come and meet their counterparts. The walls were also decorated with the banners of the Orders and all the soldiers and Knights present were wearing their display armor as a show of respect and welcome.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons CeriBanner

Ceridwyn stifled a laugh as Rayann fussed over her appearance and then broke into a snort as her friend told her to shut up. She responded with a missive of her own, ~ "Oddly enough it's probably not what you're wearing but what you aren't that our Prince is more interested in." ~ The look of shock that crossed Rayann's face as she turned sharply towards Ceridwyn was priceless and Ceridwyn only shrugged, it is the kind of thing she would never say aloud, and rarely to anyone, but she and Rayann had enough history that the naughtier side was coming out from time to time. Rayann's face was almost as red as her robes.

When the crier called noon Rayann and Ceridwyn took their places. The arrival of Pela right before they cast was perfect and Ceridwyn let Rayann do the talking. She only gave Pela a small wink that said, 'glad you could make it' and the three began the chant to open the portal.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Mythban2

The party had been one of extravagance and Myth had enjoyed every moment of it with his wife, son, and friends. It was with great reluctance that he remained in Silvanost to prepare the first wave of troops that would march to heartlund. It was a task he had prepared for and was ready to begin the moment Rayann had left his side. If there had been any doubts about his ability to lead a military force they were dashed within the first three days as Myth met with th heads of the elven military. Orders were discussed and when approved they were penned by Myth personally.

The only thing Myth had no say in was the personal entourage that would be assigned to him. Myth made it clear that he would not put a single soldier in a that he himself would not venture. While Myth was not popular among some of the nobility they did demand that he have a personal retinue of guards. Two Rangers, Two Soldiers, and a mage. All would be hand picked by the Speaker himself. While Myth did not agree with the need for the retinue he could not argue against their presence. The one consolation he was able to get in his favor was the need of a mage as he had both Ceridwyn and his own wife to fill that role.

Myth now stood dressed for battle at the head of the ranger contingent. In his armored arms he smiled holding Shaer for a few moments more before passing his son gently to his mother. He gave a nod to the twins that flanked her before turning to face the men behind him. He took a breath and approached Olwa and smiled at the young elf patting him on the shoulder. It was unusual for someone fresh out of training like him to embark upon a military campaign such as this, but with his exceptional ability both Myth and the Speaker agreed he should be aloud to embark upon this journey. As part of that honor Olwa would be the first elf to go through the portal after Myth.

Myth cleared his throat before speaking aloud with a booming voice. "Soldiers of Silvanost prepare to embark. We will be guests in lands not our own but we will be fighting a common enemy. You are the representatives of our people and I expect you to embody all that is good in the elven people. Commanders... prepare to march once the portal has opened."

Spinning on his heal Myth stepped up to the icy archway reaching out with his hand speaking softly "Open the path to the heart of our destiny. The edges of the archway began to glow and the glass-like surface of the portal began to swirl. After several seconds Myth lifted his chin and squared his shoulders before Marching through with Olwa just behind him to his right followed by the assigned retinue and then the elven rangers of Silvanost.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons OlwaBanner

Olwa looked up at the Prince as he spoke, he was proud to be an Elf today, proud to be chosen to do this and proud that he was being given a place of such honor to step through the portal second. The truth was however he knew who was on the other side of that portal, and it was she who he wanted to see more than anything.

Myth made the call to his people and Olwa stood proud and tall. He was excited and ready, this was to be the first time he was going to step out of Silvanesti lands and he was more than ready. He was dressed in his battle armor, finely etched leather that was crafted to perfection and rubbed with oils that made it as dark as night and didn't allow the slightest reflection to shine from it. His tunic and pants were made of armor weave fabric, completely silent and patterned in Elven camouflage. If he was to stand still in the forests he would become virtually invisible simply be not moving, add into that the training he was given and he like all 200 Rangers behind him, could literally disappear into their surroundings.

The portal swirled and Myth disappeared. Olwa knew that was his signal and his heart lept into his throat, he could see her, she was standing between Ceridwyn and Rayann. They had just finished their incantation and the three of them were welcoming the Prince. Olwa stepped into the swirling magic and where one foot was on Silvanesti soil the front hit Solamic dirt. He came through and looked around. The sun was bright and he squinted, never had he seen the sun so bright, the foliage of the forest having always obscured it at least a little.

He looked straight at Pela and could not help but smile, however it was brief as he had to do what his duty demanded, he instantly turned on his heel and marched to the two Commanders, Sir Ordin and Lady Rose. Prince Myth'alas had told him where they would be, and it was easy to simply turn and follow him. He stopped in front of Lady Rose and saluted, then shifted and saluted to Sir Ordin. Both returned the salute in kind and he then marched behind Prince Myth'alas and came to parade rest behind his left shoulder. He chanced a sideways glance and saw that the smile which he could not help but keep on his face was echoed by Pela's own.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Pela

As the portal opened for the Elves on the other side, Pela stepped back in line with Rayann and Ceridwyn. She saw the Prince step through as expected but when she saw who followed closely behind him, she felt her jaw drop. No doubt the first look Olwa saw on her face was one of utter surprise followed very quickly by the brightest smile she’d ever given anyone. When she first caught sight of Olwa stepping through she gave a small gasp causing Rayann and Ceridwyn to glance at her quickly but when they saw what, or more appropriately who, made her gasp, they understood.

As the Prince made his greetings followed by Olwa, Pela never took her eyes off him. He was proud of himself and his people today and it reflected in everything from his posture to the look on his face and in his blue eyes. And she was proud for and of him as well. No doubt he had been given a high honor by being the second one to step through the portal after the Prince.

Her eyes took in his battle armor and she saw how dark it was and she saw how easily he moved with it on. Everything about him spoke of his Elven heritage and his intense training as an Elven Ranger. And she felt that butterfly feeling in her stomach almost immediately after her heart jumped to her throat then settled back in her chest only to beat wildly.

It was all Pela could do to resist the urge to run to where he was and throw her arms around him in a hug. Wait. A…..hug? She actually WANTED to hug another being? Yes. YES! She DID! AS she stood there and realized this about herself, she began to fidget, curl her hands into fists then stretch the fingers out and shift her weight from one foot to the other as the Elven soldiers began to arrive in droves. This was going to be a looooooong day and no doubt it would be HOURS before she could give Olwa a hug. She would just have to bide her time until then. And it was going to be torture.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons RayannRed

Rayann heard the small gasp from Pela and glanced at the girl and saw where she was looking. As Rayann saw Olwa, the slightest of knowing grins eased over her features. As her husband greeted the Commanders, she felt her own heart flutter in her chest. There was no doubt he was a handsome sight to see. And he looked every bit the warrior Prince of his people.

As she stood next to Pela she could feel the girls emotions about to bubble over. Rayann was glad to feel anything from the girl that was hostile in nature. It was proof Pela was learning what it meant to be human. For 14 years her emotions were suppressed and now, as she was letting herself explore these emotions, Rayann felt a sense of relief. It wasn’t going to be easy for any of them. But at least now Pela was on the right course to letting them flow from start to finish instead of trying to stifle them. As Pela began to fidget, Rayann reached over and touched the girls hand with the tips of her fingers and spoke to her mind.

~Soon, Pela. Soon you will be able to speak to Olwa. Until then, remain with Ceri and I. The formalities won’t last too terribly long.~

Pela blinked when she felt Rayann’s touch, breaking her from the self imposed spell she had looking at Olwa. Glancing at Rayann and smiled and nodded slightly before turning to look back at Olwa with that same bright smile she had been wearing since his arrival. Her face was beginning to hurt because of it but she couldn’t help it.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Aeolis

Aeolis stood proud as the Prince arrive. When he saw Olwa step through immediately after Myth, he blinked. He knew Olwa was one of the best Archers and Rangers of his people, but the youngling hadn’t been outside of Silvanost. But he knew Myth wouldn’t have brought the youngling along if he didn’t have the skills necessary to perform his duties.

As the Elven warriors began to amass through the portal, Aeolis felt a surge of pride in his people. At long last they were joining this fight. He knew not all of them would survive and because of that, he felt a pang of hurt slip through him, but he also knew they understood the stakes in this war and accepted their assignment anyway.

He glanced down at Tanjee and saw she wore the same look of pride and when she glanced up at him, he nodded slightly before looking back at the Elves as they arrived. All of them were dressed in their battle armor and carried a small pack with them of the barest necessities they would need. Everything else they needed would be found in the woods that surrounded the Keep where they would be stationed or supplied by the Knights.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Healer

As Tanjee watched the arrival of her kin, she felt a lump form in her throat. She knew many of these brave warriors wouldn’t survive this looming war and those that did would forever be scared by the things they would witness. She prayed silently to her Goddess there would be mercy for as many as there could be. She woud do all she could with the gift her Goddess graced her with but much of their recovery would come with time. If they could ever recover fully.

Pushing those thoughts from her mind, she smiled proudly and blinked away the moisture that threatened to build up in her eyes. This was a proud moment for her and her people and she was more proud of them than she could ever express in words.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons OlwaBanner

The Rangers continued to pour out of the portal and when the last had his foot on the ground they turned in perfect unison four rows of fifty and faced Commander Rose and Sir Ordin. Myth's face was like stone as they all shouted in unison, "Aaye Ernil Myth'alas, Aaye coia, irma russe tuulo' moriloomir lye runya a'fuin! (Hail Prince Myth, Hail life, like lightning we strike the darkness!)

There was a very small welcome from Commander Rose and Sir Ordin, the commanders of the Elves were invited to come for a briefing with the heads of the Orders and then the Elves were dismissed to the woods to set up their encampment. The rest of the Elves, around 3000 in all would be arriving over the next few days and the excitement as well the feeling of hope hung on the air around the whole city. Olwa turned as the troops were dismissed and he looked at Pela with a bright smile, however she could see on his face that he still had duties to perform. She would be able to tell by the look on his face that he was yearning to speak with her, he was practically bursting from his skin however he was only able to wink slightly and smile. He wanted to send her a missive but he was not sure how she would feel about it and as such he restrained from speaking to her mind.

Olwa turned the opposite direction of his kin and walked straight up to Aeolis. He held scrolls sealed with the mark of the Speaker of the Stars and he came to attention in front of him, "Aeolis, heruamin (my lord), two messages from the Speaker for you."

He handed him the first and when Aeolis opened it the news would be mildly shocking, he was being asked to take command of the two hundred Elven Rangers that had just come through the portal. Prince Myth'alas would command the rest but these elite special forces Rangers from the same schooling that Aeolis himself had been through were under his direct and formal direction. Olwa cleared his throat slightly after a minute and Aeolis' head snapped up to look at him, "Also heruamin." Olwa handed him the second scroll and when he opened it he would see Olwa's transfer orders to the Ranger unit as well as a personal note from the Speaker placing Olwa under Aeolis' direct command. As Aeolis looked back up at him Olwa bowed his head respectfully placing his open palm over his heart and spoke, "Amin coiamin, amin voron, gurth goth'rim tel'Silvanesti!" (My life, my loyalty, death to the foes of the Silvanesti!)

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons CeriBanner

Ceridwyn stood at Aeolis side as the formation of Rangers came through. She too was filled with tremendous pride at the beginning of this movement of troops. For years and years she had worked to see the Elves and the Humans reunite to battle the evil of this planet and the fruits of her labor were finally starting to pay off. She wanted to hold Aeolis and weep tears of joy into his chest as this unfolded, but she remained where she stood, stoic and proud as he kin marched and shouted their battle pledge to the human Commanders but mostly to their Prince.

Myth'alas dismissed them to the woods and like vapors they seemed to disappear the instant they hit the shadows of the canopy. A lot of the forests that surrounded the Keep had been thinned to prevent sneak attacks but even still the Elves seemed to just vanish into the wild.

Olwa approached Aeolis and Ceridwyn stood by watching as the young Ranger handed the two scrolls to Aeolis. She could see the look on his face and she chanced a glance at the first. She saw the order of command given to him and she smiled softly under the hood of her robes, she could not have been more proud of him. Second she heard the pledge and formal title that Olwa spoke to him and she knew that not only was Olwa also now under his direct command, he was part of that same regiment. She felt her heart pound in her chest, Aeolis was being promoted and given his own company of Rangers, never had she felt more in love with him.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Pela

Pela groaned inwardly as she saw the Elves dispatched and sent to the woods near the Keep. Why oh why did time creep along like this? And why was Olwa staying here and walking towards Aeolis? As Olwa approached and handed Aeolis the scrolls, Pela’s eyes were locked on Olwa. So close but yet still so far away. I was so unfair! As the moments ticked by and Aeolis read the messages Olwa handed to him, she saw the look on Aeolis’ face when she chanced a glance at him. The news was of some importance and when she saw the way Olwa saluted Aeolis, she knew the news was rather significant and involved Olwa.

Again Pela had to force herself to stay where she was and at one point, if it hadn’t been for Rayann’s fingers lightly touching her hand, Pela was certain she would have jumped out and wrapped her arms around Olwa’s neck and practically strangled him. Thankful for Rayann’s intervention once more, Pela settled back down as best she could. Once more her eyes settled on Olwa’s and she felt that fluttering in her stomach grow.

Aeolis read the messages from the Speaker and couldn’t believe what his eyes were seeing. Just to make sure, he read it several times over and each time, each word was the same, in the same place on the paper. By the Gods…..he was being promoted. And he had command of the regiment of Rangers. The shock was still settling in when he heard Olwa clear his throat causing him to snap his head up and look at the young man again. When he finished reading the second message, he looked to Olwa again with raised brows. When Olwa saluted him and spoke his loyalty, Aeolis responded in kind. Rolling the messages back up, he placed them under his leather breast plate then turned to look at Ceri with a stunned smile on his face.

”Mel’amin…..I have to go speak to my soldiers. Take care and I will see you at the dinner hour if not before hand. Knowing our Knightly friends, they will wish to have some sort of dinner this evening. Until then, know my heart is with you.”

He leaned in closer and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead then stepped back and looked to Olwa and nodded.

”Come. Your official training under my command begins right now.”

He saw the way Olwa and Pela had been looking at each other and as they started walking away, he lowered his voice for Olwa’s ears alone.

”She will wait for you to return. It will not be easy for her, but she will do it. Perhaps now she will be able to focus like she did before now that you are here.”

As Aeolis saw the look on Olwa’s face, Aeolis chuckled softly and shook his head.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Healer

Tanjee watched all the events unfold and when Olwa approached her brother, she listened carefully to what transpired. When she saw Aeolis look at her, she nodded and smiled proudly at him. When he turned with Olwa to go to the Elven Rangers, she looked back at Ceri and practically squealed with delight, hugging the Elfess tightly.

”I knew he had it in him. It just took the love of a good woman to show him. I am very happy for him and for you. Now, if you will excuse me, I have to change and get back to my duties. Have a good day!”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons RayannRed

Rayann watched Aeolis and Olwa interact and as Olwa approached, Rayann could feel Pela’s excitement growing. It was all the young girl could do to hold her excitement in check and she was doing a very good job. Rayann reached over and touched her hand gently to remind her now was still not the time.

AS Aeolis received the news of his new position, she saw the look on his face and on Ceri’s as her friend smiled from beneath her hood. As the two males turned and walked off, Rayann saw Tanjee and chuckled softly as she squeezed Ceri. As Tanjee walked off, Rayann looked to Ceri and Pela and smiled as she pushed the hood of her robe off her head.

”Well, ladies, welcome to the world of a military officer’s companion. Needless to say, the time you share with them will be even more special now for you. Trust me. In the meantime, shall we?”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons OlwaBanner

As Aeolis gave his command Olwa did groan slightly inside, he only wanted to talk to Pela and spend time with her... but alas his new commander was calling him to task and he had to respond, "Yes heruamin," was his reply as Aeolis walked past him. When Aeolis leaned in and whispered Olwa looked up at him and smiled somewhat sadly, he looked over his shoulder at Pela and gave her a soft smile with a slight wink as the two Elves disappeared through the gate. She would be able to see it on his face, he was being torn away from her and was not going except by the orders of his new commander.

As the two of them walked along the long road that lead to the forest Olwa noted the looks of the Knights that were lined in a massive ten camp across the entirety of the open area around the city. He could tell that normally the canons and trebuchets of the city walls were most likely zeroed on on every square inch of this place to bombard attacking armies but now it was a massive base for the human soldiers. He could not tell how many were in the area but there must have been thousands.

The distance to the woods couldn't be closed fast enough, he was actually slightly uncomfortable now. Though the eyes of the humans were not hostile the curiosity that lingered in all of them was odd and he found it not to his liking. The moment they were in the canopy he exhaled and immediately felt more at home. Not far into the trees the Rangers were already setting leans and shelters, some had already began braiding rope from the surrounding foliage while others were building the rungs that would become ladders for getting in and out of the trees quickly. The Rangers had let no time pass in their preparations. As Aeolis approached they all stopped and formed ranks around him knowing he was most likely coming to address them.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons CeriBanner

When Tanjee embraced her Ceri could only laugh. Aeolis' sister was truly excited by this news and when she spoke her words Ceridwyn blushed slightly and placed her hand gently on Tanjee's cheek, "It was a group effort mellonamin (my friend), if not for the efforts of us all he would not be where he is. The sum of our efforts and our love has created the whole."

She squeezed Tanjee and watched as she left. When Rayann spoke she turned and also removed the hood from her head now that the welcoming was over. She nodded softly and spoke, "At least we have each other eh?"

They giggled and she turned to see Pela straining to see Olwa after he had disappeared into the crowds and out the gate, "His heart yearns the same as yours Pela. Patience, in all situations, even the affairs of the heart. Heed only that one piece of advice and you will be steps ahead of your entire race."

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons   Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Icon_minitimeTue Jul 05, 2011 12:19 pm

As the three women turned to go about their business, Pela took one more glance over her shoulder in the direction she last saw Olwa and mumbled under her breath fully aware Ceri would be able to hear her perfectly.

”Hope their giant steps that cover a lot of ground….”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Aeolis

The day was filled with work of all sorts. Aeolis DID address his Rangers. He let them know how the Knights worked, filled them in on the different Orders and how the rankings were done. He spoke at length about the Towers and how the Elves would feel nauseous after a while yet measures were in place to try and keep the ill effects from occurring.

He spoke with all of the Rangers to gauge their perspective on the war and find out where their strengths and weaknesses were. He made sure Olwa was beside him the entire time so he could ask the younger Elf some questions as well. It had been a while since he was in Silvanost and he wasn’t sure the skills of the men he now commanded and he relied on the younglings honesty. Once things had been established, he sent Olwa out to find out if there was anything the Rangers needed from the Keep and he would make sure it was brought out for them. He doubted there was anything but he made the offer all the same.

Questions arose about the Knights, the citizens within the Keep and the mages that had opened the portal for them. Of course Aeolis knew the questions weren’t about Rayann and Ceridwyn but mostly about Pela. They had gotten a glimpse of her in Silvanost and again here but they knew very little about her. Except for the rumors they heard that she had been raised, by of all things, a Netherman. Aeolis could see Olwa wasn’t upset by the questions but he wasn’t exactly happy either. Aeolis took each question in stride and by the time he got done, the Elves at least knew she wasn’t going to be a threat to them unless they crossed her. But he could see it on the faces of his troops they weren’t about to do that. Especially when Aeolis described how she single handedly took down several of the giant rock creatures patrolling the towers grounds.

As he got a good idea of his Rangers, Aeolis, immediately had a squad start a watch that was changed out every three hours. He didn’t want them to be on that duty too long for fear they would find the time too boring. Even the greatest of hunts could draw ones attention down if things weren’t happening. As each squad was changed out, he took them through the trees to where they could see the towers first hand and show them the protection in place around them. He wanted them to understand the severity of the situation and he knew the only way to nail it home for them was to let them see for themselves what happened here.

Between keeping the squads abreast of the situation, Aeolis went about helping them with the tasks at hand. He wanted to show them he wasn’t just a leader on paper. He was a true leader who had been where they were at one point in his life. He made sure Olwa did the same. He wanted to show Olwa was not getting special treatment and he gave the younger Elf a few tasks of his own to complete.

As the sun was dipping low on the horizon, Aeolis made one final round to double check on the Rangers before bidding them a good evening. He didn’t realize just how much he missed being with his fellow Rangers and being in the trees until now and even though he knew Ceri was waiting for him, he was sad to leave the trees and his Rangers. Looking over at Olwa, he clasped the young man on the shoulder and smiled.

”Good work today, Olwa. I believe you shall make a fine leader.”

Aeolis looked toward the Keep and furrowed his brows as he saw the Towers beyond then turning around to look at the land stretching out away from the Keep. Taking a deep breath, he spoke quietly.

”I pray we are enough to turn the tide of darkness, my friend.”

He stood there a few more moments before looking at Olwa again the letting a knowing smile ease over his features.

”I believe there are a couple of women who will be anxious to see us. What do you say we go find them, after we’ve bathed of course?”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Pela

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons RayannRed

Rayann and Ceri had picked up where they left off with Pela. She had insisted to do so to pass the time after Aeolis and Olwa walked off. Rayann was reluctant to do so but Pela was rather persistent. And Rayann was glad for the persistence. It was as though Pela had found her center again. Her focus had returned and she was able to defend against spells that were being sent towards her as well as fire off a few of her own. Ceri and Rayann both saw the accuracy had also returned to her spells as well. It was good to see her like this once more.

In this particular instance, Rayann had trapped Pela in an earthen tomb and within moments, the ground burst forth sending sharp shrapnel’s of ice in all directions. Rayann and Ceri shielded themselves from the damage of the shards of ice as they watched Pela bursting from the ground with the ice shards. Landing a few feet away from the earthen tomb, Pela knelt down on one knee with her head bowed before she slowly lifted her head to look at Rayann.

Rayann could see Pela was slightly winded, as well she should be, but she was ready to go another round if she had to. With a nod, Rayann and Ceri dropped their shield and walked to Pela who slowly got to her feet and brushed herself off. She had changed into a pair of leggings, a tunic and soft boots, as she always did, when practicing. Her face was smudged with dirt but there was a definite twinkle to her eyes now.

”Very good, Pela. You made a good combination of escape and attack in one spell. It would certainly surprise the enemy. It’s good to see you focusing better. It’s very important you keep that focus, regardless of what happens around you. Remember, there’s ALWAYS a way out. Somehow.”

Pela nodded and smiled as she looked to Rayann and Ceri.

”I understand. I hope to improve even more in the coming days. It is important, especially now. I am certain the mages within the towers are well aware of the activity lately. It is best we be prepared for some sort of action from them.”

Rayann nodded.

”Indeed. I believe we call that being safe instead of sorry. Why don’t we call it a day and get ready for our dinner? I’m sure we will hear the dinner bell soon enough. And I don’t know about you ladies, but I am famished and ready to spend some time with my Prince. I’m sure the both of you would like to spend some time with your men as well.”

Pela blushed brightly when Rayann said that and she dared a glance at Ceri before looking back at Rayann and smiling shyly.

”I would be telling a lie if I said I was not looking forward to seeing Olwa.”

Rayann looked at Ceri and grinned then looked back to Pela.

”Really? We had no idea.”

Pela blinked and looked at Rayann and Ceri and started to speak up again.

”Certainly you sa…..”

Realizing Rayann was jesting, Pela giggled softly.

”I am learning….it takes me a few seconds, but I am learning.”

Rayann smiled and nodded.

”Yes you are, Pela. And it shows. You’re blossoming into a beautiful young woman. No wonder Olwa can’t help looking at you.”

Again Pela felt her cheeks burn. She smiled once more.

”Well, if you both will excuse me, I need to bathe before I see him again.”

Turning on her heel, Pela walked away from the o ther mages with her head held high and a slight bounce in her step. Rayann watched her walking away and spoke to Ceri.

”I believe our apprentice is learning what it means to be human and have emotions. Did you hear that giggle? I don’t think I ever heard her giggle before. I was shocked to say the least. I hope it didn’t show.”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons OlwaBanner

Olwa did as his commander instructed and stuck with Aeolis the entire day. He did the tasks assigned to him with all the energy and fervor he could muster, and by the time the sun was beginning to set the Rangers had their camp set, defenses in place and a perimeter established. Aeolis had already began the patrols and Olwa was half expecting to be placed in the first one but Aeolis held him back.

They walked together and Aeolis stared at the towers, speaking his words of concern but also complimenting Olwa for his efforts today. He was surprised to hear that he would make a fine leader, he had not really thought that far ahead in his life, frankly he was not so sure he even wanted to serve in the military forces of the Elves. He was following the traditions of his family, earning awards for his efforts and being bragged about back home in Silvanost by his parents, quite frankly it was more doing things out of routine anymore rather than having a drive to become an Elf of importance in the Ranger forces.

He did smile politely and buried his feelings. For now, he would serve and he would do so with everything he had, there would be no world left to live in if he didn't, and for the first time he was starting to realize there was more to living than simply training. He simply could not get his mind off of Pela and as he looked at the tops of the three towers, their ominous glow breaking the tranquil skyline with their spurting shadows and flames, he had the urge to protect something, for the first time.

He couldn't help but look at Aeolis and smile as he mentioned their "ladies"... honestly he hadn't even thought of Pela as his "lady", he was simply interested in her, more interested than he had ever been in a female, but to be thinking of it in those terms was also a little foreign. He certainly did want to see her, in fact it was the driving force that kept him going all day, the hope that when the work was done he would get to see her, to talk with her and connect with her again.

Aeolis suggested bathes and he nodded, "I will meet you here in 30 minutes heruamin, is that reasonable?" Aeolis nodded with a smile and Olwa went to clean up and change. He wore finely knit garments made from Elven silks. They were in wartime now however so over the nicer garments he was wearing a black, light armor leather vest that held his twin blades criss-crossed on his back. The armor was so intricate and woven with such fine precision it hardly appeared as armor, but for one with a trained eye it would be obvious that he was prepared for any kind of surprise action the enemy might throw against them at all times, as were all the rangers.

Olwa returned and found Aeolis waiting. He smiled and saluted with his open palm against his heart and nodded respectfully as Aeolis looked him over.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons CeriBanner

Ceridwyn was more than impressed with Pela's performance and when she escaped the earth tomb she was even more so. Rayann had cast it and Ceridwyn was prepared to release it should there be a problem with Pela not being able to escape. It was dangerous what they were doing, but it was also necessary. Wizard training was a constant walking of the line between life and death and ultimately came to a finale in the Trials. This was not the trials however and though the Wizards who would conduct Pela's trials should she choose to take them WOULD be trying to kill her that was not the goal today.

Pela burst forth and landed on the ground, the ice shards ricocheting off Rayann and Ceridwyn's shields. Ceridwyn raised her eyebrows and looked at Rayann with a cross of being impressed but also some concern. She was worrying that Pela might be learning too quickly, however she also realized that they had to keep moving her forward in progression. She didn't want to introduce too much power into the young girl too quickly for fear she could end up tearing her own body apart, however to hold her back could have even worse consequences. The amount of power that Pela had just drawn into herself however was slightly alarming but Ceridwyn swiftly lost the expression on her face before Pela had a chance to open her eyes and see it.

As Rayann spoke and began talking of stopping for the even Ceridwyn concurred and nodded in agreement. Then Pela opened up and the blossom opened fully before their very eyes. Ceridwyn could only watch with a smile as the girl giggled and then confessed that she did indeed want to spend time with Olwa and Ceridwyn responded, "Then spend time with him is what you should do. To say you deserve the rest is an understatement, but to deny you the time with someone you find of interest would be criminal."

She watched as Pela left to bathe and change and she spoke again, "Pela, just be careful please."

Pela turned and looked at her with a sparkling smile and a confident nod. She had 'heard' what was said, the message that was under the words, and Ceridwyn could see on her face that she got it. With a smile Ceridwyn nodded and then turned to Rayann as she spoke of Pela's changes this evening. She turned back after Rayann had finished speaking, looking in the direction that Pela had departed, "We were both shocked my friend, but what a shock of welcome it was. I think that the time is coming for me to step back and for you to fully take over. She can't learn what it is to be human from me...," she turned and looked at Rayann with a slight sadness in her eyes, "She can only learn that from a human."

Rayann was about to speak and Ceridwyn shook her head and interrupted, "It is how it should be, and it is the right thing. An apprentice should only have one master lest the messages become confused. We are very similar Rayann, but we do wear different robes. Pela needs to start learning a path of thought, if we stay too broad she will ultimately become confused. It is how all wizards start, and ultimately she will chose her allegiance. I will not become absent be any means, but if we continue to conduct the training in this way we will do more harm than good in the long run. It is unnatural and therefore it will cause problems."

She looked up at Rayann again and smiled, "When this is over she will be living at Glen Durel with you, she needs to begin to see you as a Mother figure if that is going to work out as well. That will never happen if I am always hanging around. Obviously she will never be a replacement for any of your children, but if you are adopting this orphan she needs to be treated as your third child."

PostSubject: Re: Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons   Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Icon_minitimeTue Jul 05, 2011 2:00 pm

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons RayannRed

Rayann stared at Ceri for what seemed like an eternity without saying a word. The words Ceri spoke hit Rayann hard, right to her soul and she didn’t know what to say. Ceri was right and deep down Rayann knew that, but she had been keeping Pela at arm’s length purposefully. But to hear Ceri state the obvious aloud was something Rayann was not prepared for. Not yet anyway. Then again, would she EVER be ready? She doubted it. But now that the subject matter had been given life, there was no way for Rayann to skirt the issue any longer.

Finally taking a deep breath and looking to where Pela had been walking a few moments ago, Rayann felt her reserve beginning to crack. Her voice trembled slightly when she spoke and what she spoke was the hurtful truth even Rayann herself didn’t want to talk about. Not even to Myth. Even though he knew all about it without her ever saying a word.

”I’m afraid to, Ceri. What if she turns her back on me like Kali did? I don’t know if I can go through that again. I know she needs me in the way you’re referring to but…..Gods I just don’t know. In many ways she reminds me of Kali but there are so many ways she is different. And like you say she will never replace any of my children but what if one day I forget all about Kali because of Pela?”

She turned her pained gaze to her friend then.

”How can I abandon Kali for Pela? That wouldn’t be fair to my daughter.”

She felt tears sting her eyes and Rayann grew angry for trying to shed them. She thought she’d cried enough about all of this but as it turns out, she still had plenty more to cry about. As the first tears fell, she wiped them away and looked away for a moment before looking back at Ceri.

”I wish nothing more than for us to be back at Glen Durel right now but I know I can never rewrite the past. I can only try and mold my future but when I look at my future, I don’t know what I see. But I also know it’s not fair to Pela to just leave her out there dangling. She needs guidance but…..I’m so afraid of getting close to her.”

She reached out and took her friends hand, squeezing it gently.

”If you could cast a spell on me right now to take this fear away from me, I wish you would do it right now, but I know that’s impossible. Tell me, Ceri….what should I do?”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Aeolis

Aeolis checked Olwa’s choice of attire out and nodded with approval. He was dressed similarly, even donning his own vest and wearing his blade, something he hadn’t done in a while since being here. He gave Olwa a smile and gestured for him to walk with him. He spoke in their native language as they walked.

”So as it turns out, there is a dinner tonight. A very informal one. I have sent a runner for the Rangers to join us in shifts. The upper command thought it would be a good idea for the Elves and Knights to get to know each other on less formal terms. Of course they have both been told to be on their best behavior.”

Aeolis chuckled and shook his head.

”Like that sort of reminder needs to be given to either side. But I wanted you to be aware so when we walk into the Keep proper you are not overwhelmed. There will be a good many bodies about within. More so than usual and things will get crowded at times. If you should feel the need for fresh air, do not hesitate to do so. Just let me know when you do.”

He tapped on his temple with his fore and middle finger to let Olwa know how to let him know.

”The Knights are a good group of men. They have suffered two devastating losses in the last six months that have depleted their numbers greatly. While they will be sociable and jovial for the most part, there will be somberness about them as well. Just be yourself and they will find your company, knowledge and skills a welcome change. You will find out what it is about the human spirit that makes them, well….human. And you will understand why it is so important our races come together to fight as one.”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons CeriBanner

Ceridwyn listened and was there for Rayann. She knew what she was saying was going to hit some raw flesh, but it had to be said, and then Rayann hit it exactly, "That is right Rayann, it isn't fair to Pela to leave her dangling. After Bad Rock was killed I offered to take her to Silvanost after all this but you insisted that she go to Glen Durel with you and Myth'alas instead. That is the RIGHT thing, she needs to be around her own people she would always be somewhat of an outcast in Elven lands. What happened with Kali is not your fault and you HAVE to stop blaming yourself!"

Her voice was slightly elevated with that last sentence, almost but not quite a parental instruction. Ceridwyn paused and inhaled deeply, "There are things I have been wanting to say but have not wanted to say them for fear that they will hurt, because they will hurt. Kali didn't just walk out on you though, she walked out on Aeolis and me, on the whole of Heartlund and specifically Trystan. Why she did so with such haste is beyond me, but she was raised to make decisions with her emotional responses to the environment she was in. If you feel anger, lash out, sadness destroy that which makes you sad, fear, embrace it and face it head ..... on...."

Her voice drifted away and her eyes locked onto an invisible spot on the wall, clearly she had slipped into deep thought and she furrowed her brows with her minds whirling. She looked back up at Rayann after a few seconds and continued, "The fact is Rayann, Pela needs you, and you need Pela. You will never forget about Kali, but you can't drag Pela behind the memories of it. Any child is capable of walking away from you, your son might do it some day just as his father did to his parents." Ceridwyn's face was serious and somewhat stern, "I don't mean disrespect towards the Prince with that statement, but it is true, and he did come back. If we live our lives in the what if's and not the what is happening then we will miss out on a lot. As I said, Pela will never be a replacement for Kali, but if you are going to commit to this young ladies life then commit with everything you have, don't go half way because she will know and she will leave to find something that holds her close. Bad Rock was a Netherman, what we see as a Barbarian race with their services available to the highest bidder. They are known for their lack of emotions and their rash decision to move them moment to moment. Pela loved Bad Rock for one reason, because he cared for her, he took her in, he taught her and sheltered her from a harsh world. We might not agree with the things he taught her or how he did so but he was more of a father to her then anything she had ever know. She loved him because he brought structure and discipline into her life and gave her something to shoot for everyday."

Cweidwyn squeezed Rayann's hands in return, "My advice is to love her if you are going to love her, but cut her loose if you can't. She is a survivor and I will take her in so we don't loose her... but the girl needs a mother and father figure in her life, and it should be you and Prince Myth'alas. I don't know where things will go for myself, Aeolis loves me, of that I am certain but I can't mate with him, my womb is sealed. He has not proposed any sort of deeper commitment than what we have, and I can live with that, but it is no place for Pela to be, she needs to see a husband and wife that love one another."

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons OlwaBanner

Olwa listened as Aeolis talked. He remembered hearing much of this from the Prince as they prepared to come to Heartlund over the last couple weeks. He nodded in affirmation that he was paying attention and was heeding Aeolis' words.

As they made their way into the main audience room of the Keep Olwa immediately noticed the human architecture. It was bland, so bland he wasn't sure where to put his eyes. He was doing his best to find the most interesting spot but there was simply nothing but grey rock and some banners. Truly there was no craftsmanship involved in the design of this place.

Aeolis excused himself to go talk to Trystan and Olwa nodded. He made his way over towards the long banquet table all the while searching the room for Pela.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons RayannRed

As Ceri talked to Rayann, she couldn’t help but hear her own mother speak these words to her. It was as if, for just a moment, Rayann’s mother was talking through Ceri and as she heard the words Ceri spoke, she felt the pain of them but she also felt the truth in them. And the truth will always set you free. Rayann’s tears fell freely then and she reached out and hugged her friend dearly. She DID need to hear the words Ceri spoke. And she needed the chance to cleanse her heart once and for all. Since Kali left there had been no real time for her to think about what her daughter had done except for the darkest hours of the night. When all was quiet and there was nowhere for her to escape, Rayann was forever haunted by the last time she saw her daughter….walking into the protective wardings of the towers. It took a few moments for Rayann to collect herself and when she did, she sniffled softly and nodded her head.

”You’re right, Ceri. I do need her. Even if she doesn’t realize it, I do. And I understand what you say about children leaving. I hadn’t looked at it like that. I guess I was just too caught up in my own pain that I didn’t see the others who were hurt from her actions. I suppose it’s time for me to stop looking over my shoulder and look at what’s right before my eyes.”

She smiled at her friend as she wiped her eyes once more.

”Thank you, Ceri. I needed to hear all of that. Where would I be without you?”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Pela

Pela had bathed and dressed in a soft, dark blue tunic that had a built in corset like bodice. The laces were black and tied in the front instead of the back, pulling the middle of the tunic in giving a tapered look. The collar gave way to a slight V in the neck. There were no sleeves allowing her arms to be completely bare, just the way she liked them to be. Black leggings that peeked out from the long waist of the tunic covered her legs and she wore the highly polished black boots that had been given to her shortly after she had arrived in Heartlund.

Her white hair fell down past her shoulder blades and fell in lazy waves while the front of her hair had been braided then pulled back and cinched at the base of her skull by a hair clip. She was walking down the hall and her feet couldn’t carry her fast enough. Her eyes scanned every face she saw noting there were several Elven faces already in the crowd but none of them HIS.

Finally she reached the main audience room where the biggest crowds of people were and she didn’t see him. Her smile dropped and she figured there was a reason why he wasn’t there yet. But she saw Aeolis so she figured Olwa HAD to be there. Her eyes scanned the crowd again, this time more carefully and she finally saw him. She would know him anywhere, even though she’d spent only a few moments with him.

As she began to weave her way through the sea of bodies heading towards him, she was using every set of manners she could to not be rude but in truth, all she wanted to do was push her way towards him and forget everybody else around her. Of course it wasn’t like she was getting any salutations from the Knights. At least not many of the ones who survived the assault on the Towers, anyway.

Finally she made it to where she last saw Olwa and she walked up behind him. He seemed to be searching the room as well and she hoped it was for her. That overwhelming urge to hug him was back and try as she may, she simply couldn’t stop herself this time. By the time his eyes found her, she was about to collide with him, arms wide open.

”Olwa!”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons CeriBanner

Ceridwyn nodded and placed her hands on Rayann's cheeks as her friend spoke her words. Ceridwyn could feel the moisture against her palms and she looked up into Rayann's eyes speaking softly, "I love you Rayann, you are the best friend I have ever had. It is no mystery why I have shared every one of your pains as well as your laughs."

She hugged Rayann tightly and giggled softly as Rayann spoke asking where she would be without Ceridwyn. She laughed, "No doubt you would be living peacefully in Glen Durel with your Prince and not being drug along on these fool hearty adventures."

She winked and leaned up placing a kiss on Rayann's cheek, "Let's to the celebration, though it will most likely be a slightly somber event it is still a dinner party and I am sure we can find some laughter."

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons OlwaBanner

Olwa was starting to become discouraged. He had been looking and looking with no sight of her. Finally he heard steps rapidly approaching and though he did not know the sound of her he turned. He was greeted with the impact of her and he could not help but smile as he felt her pressed up against him. What were these feelings? This desire to be close and never be without? They all rushed over him like a tidal wave and he embraced them lovingly.

She was giggling in his ear and he knew at that moment he would banish the birds from the royal gardens if they were to dare interrupt her song. Finally she pushed back and was looking into his eyes with a smile on her face. He spoke in Elven, the spell from Ceridwyn had worn off but somehow she still could understand his words, "Nae saian luume', cormamin lindua ele lle!" ("It has been too long, my heart sings to see you!")

He smiled warmly and brought his hand up, rubbing it against her cheek. The cold from her skin was once again more intoxicating than any wine he had ever consumed and he looked into her eyes, "I would walk with you on the battlements and have some time to ourselves, if it pleases you to be on my arm this evening."

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Color_10Keatara watched the events unfold with absolute wonderment in her eyes. The elves were beautiful in their glamor and grace and looking at Tanjee and Aeolis, she could see their pride in their brothers and sisters shining in their eyes. She was proud to be next to them and be able to share this with them. But, it was bittersweet for she also remembered her own family and the gatherings they would have. Still, she held her head high and did not disgrace her new friends.

As everyone began to disperse, she suddenly felt somewhat left out but smiled to herself for her childishness. These people were new here as well as Tanjee and Aeolis greeting ones they hadn't seen in the Goddess knew how long. Keatara slipped away unnoticed by all, leaving Tanjee and Aeolis to their friends and loved ones as she headed back to the training area for the children. With all of the commotion, she wondered if now would be a good time to go into the woods and gather the herbs she would need for her new classes with the children. She now had her own, small two room cabin at the training area and was thankful to Trystan for making it happen. It made it easier for her for she was knew everything she needed to be to be with the children.

She entered the small cabin and smiled. It was clean and orderly, everything having it's place. Her small single bed was made with a celtic quilt covering the mattress...a gift from the leather worker that his deceased wife had made for the daughter they'd never had. She ran her fingers over it for she had become close the elderly man.....he had become the father she'd lost so to speak and she the daughter he'd never had. Walking over to a cupboard, she pulled down some jars with lids and then in a drawer, she pulled out some small hand-made pouches. In another drawer, she gathered small gardening shears to cut the plants with without harming the root system except for those she wished to have starts grow from.

Having everything she needed she headed to the wooded area around the keep, having told one of the guards at the gate where she would be and what she was doing.

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons RayannRed

Rayann couldn’t help but laugh softly at Ceri and shake her head.

”As if I would let this go on around me and NOT get involved. Please. You and I know me much better than that”

As she felt Ceri’s kiss to her cheek, Rayann smiled again and closed her eyes. Standing up with Ceri, she smiled back at her friend and nodded.

”I love you too Ceri. You’re the sister I never had. And I can’t thank you enough for being here with me. Let‘s see if we can find our men folk and spend some time with them this evening before it‘s too late and it‘s time for bed.”

Rayann dropped her voice as they started walking.

”Of course that’s when some of the BEST time we could spend with them happens.”

She saw the look Ceri was giving her and feigned innocence.

”What? And like the comment you made earlier was better?”

Laughing softly, they walked arm in arm to the main audience hall just in time to see Pela and Olwa reunited. Sighing softly, Rayann looked at the two younger people and smiled.

”I hope somehow they will be able to stay that way with each other for a while. He certainly has been a very positive influence on her. I would hate to see what would happen if anything negative happened between them.”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Pela

Pela giggled softly as she felt Olwa’s arms wrap around her and hold her against him. It was even better than she expected. When she pulled back and looked into his eyes, she could see it felt as good if not better to him as well. When he spoke to her in Elven, she understood what he was saying and she couldn’t help but smile even more. She couldn’t speak the language as eloquently as he could, obviously, but she gave it a try all the same.

”cormamin lindua ele lle….um…too.”

She felt her cheeks grow warm and she looked down before looking back up at him. When she felt the touch of his hand on her cheek, she looked back up at him and nodded to his inquiry.

”Yes. I would love to. And it pleases me greatly to be on your arm this evening. Besides, I do not like crowds and it is rather crowded in here right now.”

As he held out his elbow for her to take, she slipped her hand under his arm and headed out to the battlements with him. As they walked, she spoke softly to him so no other ears could hear her.

”I did not think I would see you again. And when I saw you walk through the portal, it was all I could do NOT to run to you like I just did. But I knew there were certain protocols in place I had to adhere to.”

Something just dawned on her and she stopped walking practically pulling him back a step. His nimble footedness kept him from stumbling and it seemed as though he knew all along what she was going to do. When he looked at her, she had a look of sheer terror on her face.

”Oh no. Did I break a protocol by hugging you like that in public? Have I brought shame to you with that display of affection?”

Ch 20: Of Towers and Dragons Aeolis

Aeolis watched as Pela practically threw herself into Olwa’s arms. He knew she had been very anxious to meet up with the youngling and now that they had, there was nothing standing between them. He chuckled softly as he watched them a few minutes and when they started to leave the room, he saw Olwa glance at him and send him the missive of where they were going. Aeolis gave the slightest of nods as he sent an affirmative missive back to Olwa.

In almost the same instance he felt Ceri’s presence and looked across the room to see her and Reayann enter and watch Olwa and Pela’s reunion. When she looked at him he was smiling softly at her. He sent her a missive to her mind as he nodded ever so slightly.

~Heart of my heart. Come…join us. We would love the company of you two beautiful ladies.~

Rayann took a deep breath when she saw Myth from across the room standing with Aeolis, Trystan, Sir Ordin, Commander Fairwind and a few others. She knew his keen Elven eyesight saw the puffiness of her eyes and the redness that was wearing off telling him she had been crying. Sending him a missive to ease his mind, she spoke softly to his mind.

~All is well, mel’amin. I will explain all later. For now, enjoy the company and I will be by your side shortly.~
