14: Mixed Minds Aeolis

Aeolis was awake when the sky was still dark but light would soon be coming and he knew he had to prepare for the journey ahead. Ceri slept soundly next to him and he didn’t want to leave the warmth of her body. Especially after the somewhat restless night she had the night before. Several times he had to hold her close and speak softly to her until she settled once more. His brow furrowed as he could imagine what caused her restlessness.

With little indication he left the bed, he slid out from the protective embrace of the leaves and moved to get dress. He chose his ranger clothing that consisted of dark brown leggings, a dark green tunic with hood and his soft, high boots. Once he was dressed, he gathered his weapons and secured his quiver and bow on his back while securing his short sword on his hip and his daggers on other areas of his person.

Lastly, he placed his bracers on his forearms and secured them over his long sleeves. His clothing was heavier and made for the colder weather winter brought with it. Once he was ready to go, he looked back at Ceri sleeping in the embrace of the leaves and walked over to kneel next to her on the bed. Leaning down, he kissed her temple and whispered softly in her ear in Elven.

”Rest, mel’amin. I shall return soon. I promise.”

He was half tempted to curl up beside her once more but he knew if he did, he would be late and he couldn’t afford to make them late. Time was not on their side and he had to hurry and find Bad Rock while they still had what time they did. Walking over to the door, he looked back at her once more then slipped out silently, pausing to look at the guards.

”Keep her safe until I return.”

The guards both saluted and nodded. Aeolis then slipped silently down the hall and made his way out of the Keep. The grounds were still eerily quiet as he made his way stealthily towards the livery.

14: Mixed Minds LadyKellan

Kellan closed the shudder to her window then slipped into the bed and curled under the covers, settling into their warmth. As she drifted off to sleep, her thoughts were that of a handsome Elf and soaring high above the clouds. When her eyes fluttered open, she blinked a few times then pulled herself from her bed. Going about her normal morning routine, she washed and slipped her clothing on she wore under her armor. The leggings and tunic were well fitted to her form and she felt as though they were more a part of her own body than that of clothing she wore.

Once her clothes were on, she called her Squire in to help her don the traveling armor she would wear. The young girl was no more than 14 summers old but she was very proficient and quick with her duties. Not to mention she reminded Kellan of herself at her age. Once she assisted her with the armor, she requested her to gather up her bow and sword so she could carry them with her. As the Squire went about making sure her arrows were sharp and her sword polished and sharpened as well, Kellan sat down at the small desk in her room.

Pulling out a parchment and her ink quill, she started to write a note then paused. Chewing on her bottom lip she debated on what, if anything, she should write. Finally she began to write and when she was done, she critiqued her letter to make sure it sounded appropriate.

Trystan,

I know things between us have not been the most pleasant they could be but I needed to send this to you. Liam used to tell you that sometimes the threat came from within and I never understood what he meant by that, until last evening.
Please be careful while I am gone. Be mindful of your inner circle for things are not as they appear to be. Jealousy can eat a person up inside and cause them to do things they normally would not do and my fear is that you would be an unsuspecting target.

Stay safe and may Paladine watch over you.

Yours in Honor,
Kellan

Satisfied her note would at least make him think, she folded it neatly then sealed it with wax. Standing, she saw her Squire waiting for her. Smiling at the girl, Kellan handed the note to her.

”Make sure Sir Trystan gets this note as soon as you see him, Moira. It’s extremely important.”

The girl took the note and nodded.

“Aye, Lady Kellan. I will deliver it to his hand personally. I swear.”

Kellan smiled and touched the girls shoulder gently as she nodded.

”Of that, I have no doubt, Moira. Be safe while I’m gone and when I return, I want to hear how well you have been at your studies, hm?”

Moira nodded again.

‘Yes, Ma’am. You will receive a good report on me. Please be safe and return to Heartlund quickly.”

Kellan nodded.

”I will, Moira. I promise.”

With Moira’s assistance, even though it wasn’t needed, Kellan had her blade strapped to her hip, her traveling cloak secured at her neck, and her bow and quiver in hand as she walked out her door. The sky was barely showing signs of growing lighter when she stepped outside the Keep into the crisp, predawn air. Her breath escaped her mouth in a plume of steam and she knew this trip would not be all that pleasant as far as the temperature was concerned.

Pulling her cloak more around her, she couldn’t help but think of the warmth she felt when Nol had given her his cloak the night before….as well as the warmth from his touch and kiss. With a sigh that sent more steam pluming into the air, she pushed those thoughts form her mind and walked to the livery.

Smoke was all prepared to go as well as a steed for Aeolis and she was just checking his legs and saddle when she heard someone clear their throat from behind her. Whirling about, she saw Aeolis standing there looking every bit the forest elf he truly was. There was a wildness about him she had not seen before and knew he was going to be right at home as they traveled through the forests.

”Didn’t y our m other teach you it was rude to sneak up on someone?”

There was half a grin on Kellan’s face as she spoke and Aeolis chuckled good naturedly.

”I am an Elf, remember? I cannot help but sneak up on people. And you will thank me for that ability when the time comes to really use it.”

Kellan chuckled.

”Perhaps, but it still unnerves me you can do that.”

Aeolis checked out his steed as well then easily swung up into the saddle and patted the beasts neck.

”I would apologize for doing that to you but….I am afraid I am really not sorry.”

When Kellan turned around he winked at her then nodded towards the entrance of the livery.

”We best be leaving now, Lady Kellan. The sooner we leave, the sooner we shall return.”

Kellan glanced towards the outside and nodded as well then pulled herself up into Smoke’s saddle and shifted her weight until she was set.

”Aye. I couldn’t agree with you more.”

With a nudge of her knees and a slight touch of her heels, Smoke headed for the livery gates and out into the open grounds of the keep. Sentries on the battlements called out to their comrades the travelers were on their way so they would not be held up by opening and closing doors. Kellan glanced all around her but could not see any sign of Nol yet she knew he was watching her from someplace high above.

Aeolis felt the muscles of the horse m ove beneath him and closed his eyes as he whispered a silent prayer to the Gods for a safe and fruitful journey to return to the Keep. When he opened his eyes, he saw the heat signature of the humans as they moved on the battlements and called out to the others.

Their journey to retrieve Bad Rock and his daughter was now beginning. Gods help them all.

14: Mixed Minds Ceribanner

Ceridwyn stirred slightly at his touch but did not wake. It was the warm sunlight on her face that finally roused her and she blinked her eyes open looking across at the empty bed. She inhaled sadly as the reality hit her, he was finally on his journey, probably a dozen kilometers off by now. She brushed the leaf and it uncurled opening itself towards the floor so she could sit up and swing her legs off the bed. Her head was pounding and she touched her temple as the depth of the evil magic pulsed around the room. She whispered in prayer as she focused and pushed the sensation of the darkness away from her. The pain subsided as she focused and finally she stood walking to the water basin.

She poured herself some water and washed her face, tucking her hair behind her ears and placing one of the ornately jeweled Elven hair pieces in her long hair. She looked in the mirror and whispered to herself, “Without your other half, this is as presentable as you are going to be my dear.” She half smiled and put her robes on. They caressed her with all the affection she would feel from a lover, wrapping themselves around her and filling the air with the sweet spicy smell of spell reagents. With a step she was at the door and as she pulled it open the two guards looked up and nodded silently at her. With a smile she spoke, “I supposed he requested you keep me safe?” One of them looked at her and nodded with a smile of his own, “Assuredly he did ma’am, and we vowed to do so.” She smiled and spoke, “Then I suppose your first duty is to see me to breakfast, for that is the pain I am feeling the most at the moment.” The guards laughed, she was unlike any elf, especially a Sylvan elf, that they had ever met, not that they had met many. She was not stuffy or snobby, in fact she was always full of conversation and warmth. As they walked she chatted with them, learning about them and getting to know who they were.

“Chow hall ma’am, we’ll wait here by the door.”

“By all means you will not!”

They looked at her and she spoke, “How dare you suggest that I eat alone, no, we are all in this mess together, so you might as well get used it it.”

The elder of the two spoke, “We are on duty ma’am, can’t eat while we are on guard.”

“And you can’t be on guard on an empty stomach, I can hear it growling through that tin can you are wearing, now come, I insist you eat with me and if one of your commanding officers has a problem with it I shall see to it that you are not put to blame.”

They looked at her apprehensively and then finally complied. “Very well, but this is not the proper time.”

“There’s a lot of that going around, three towers to the East are my case in point.” They laughed and shrugged, entering with her.

Finding a spot at the end of some long wooden tables she gestured for them to sit, “I will go get our food, that way you can say you never GOT any food for yourself but it was given to you.” With a smile she was gone in a flash, returning within a minute, a plate of warm bread cakes, roasted meat and eggs along with fresh water and goat’s milk. “I didn’t know what you two like so I just got some of everything. Unfortunately there was no tea so I will have to live with water for now.”

They ate and she found contentment in her surroundings. The place smelled of soldiers and grit, but she found a certain beauty in the loyalty most of the soldiers had to their fellows. After 20 minutes or so a Knight approached, she recognized him as the one who was chastising Lady Kellan the evening before at the dinner party. He walked over and looked down at Ceridwyn, his bushy beard concealing the distrust on his face, but all the same Ceridwyn could see it. “Lady mage.” He nodded politely and then turned to the two guards who were no longer jovial but had looks of deep concern on their faces, “Aren’t you two on duty?” One of them opened his mouth but Ceridwyn cut him off, “Sir Walter, I invited the young men to join me as I ate, you wouldn’t expect me to eat alone would you?” He turned and looked at her again, his eyes brows raising slightly, “It is their station to obey orders and their orders are to guard you during your stay.”

Cocking her head back slightly she spoke, “I thought they were merely escorts, what affront have I committed that requires I be guarded?” He looked at her, clearly he had chosen his words poorly, or was it he was now speaking from the heart, and personally felt that ALL magi should be guarded. “It is not a matter of being escorted or guarded, the issue is they are not to have chow while on duty.” He turned and looked at them again, both men stared back at him nervously and then one looked to Ceridwyn pleading with her to fix this. She stood and looked up at Sir Walter who was easily half a meter taller than her. “Sir Walter, they protested, I insisted, it is no fault of theres that…”

“The disobeyed orders and therefore will be punished.”

Her face and demeanor suddenly changed and she responded, “Now you listen to me ‘sir’, they have done nothing to deserve punishment unless hospitality is now on the list of offenses that can be committed by city guard.”

He turned and looked at her, the flush in his cheeks disguised by his beard but the anger in his eyes was obvious, “Careful Wizard, your mate is no here to protect you.”

She furrowed her brows and there was a brief instant of satisfaction on his face, a look that disappeared quickly as she responded, her voice was low and full of authority, “Now you listen to me, I swear by my robes that if you punish either of these men over this I will see to it that you regret it.”

His distrust in all wizards gave him pause and for a split second it could be seen in his face, but suddenly he was a Knight again, bravery covering his face, “Oh really, and what do you intend to do?”

She could feel the trap, no answer would be correct, “What matters is that these two men have shown more honor in just one morning with a guest than you have shown in a lifetime.”

He stepped back, his face flush with anger, “You DARE challenge my honor?!! If your mate was here I would challenge him to the sword and prove my merit!”

“Then challenge ME if your honor is damaged!”

“I would NEVER challenge a woman!”

“Then you are a coward!” He slammed his tray on the table and brought his finger up threateningly, the guards stood and grabbed at their swords but the flash in Ceridwyn’s eyes caused them to step back. Sir Walters finger began to glow as she hissed words of magic, he grasped at his wrist with his other hand and his eyes went as wide as saucers. Despite his best effort and all his strength, his right hand reached down, grabbed his sword, withdrew it from his sheath and handed it to Ceridwyn. She took it, holding it clumsily in her hand and looked directly into his terror stricken eyes, the spell had moved through his body and he was paralyzed, unable to move. “Now, Sir Walter, it seems that we have gotten off to a bad start you and I. My name is Ceridwyn Bol Shoraes of the White Robes, known by my kin the Silvanesti Elves as “Night’s Whisper”. I do not intend to shake your world to its foundation, but trust me when I say that I am more than capable of seeing to it that my safety against the likes of you is secured. You call yourself a man of honor but do you think for a second my Elven hearing didn’t hear your words towards Lady Kellan last night?”

His face went pale, it never occurred to him that with Elves in the room his biting words were not private. She hissed words again and the spell released, he clutched at the table as the strain of his muscles let loose and he moved forward. He looked up at her, a mix of dislike and distrust in his eyes. “My sword,” he reached forward towards her, his palm open to receive his blade. She looked at him and spoke, “I think not Mr. Walter, I am going to give this to Lady Rose, your new Commander and she will give it back when you are ready to wield it with honor once again.” He scowled and began to move towards her, the leather gloves from Ceridwyn’s two guards who still stood behind him creaked gently against their spears, though he was their superior, their duty to protect Ceridwyn was their mission, despite his rank. He halted and looked at her with hatred in his eyes, “Very well Wizard.” He stood upright, gathering himself to his full height, the entire mess hall was now watching and he turned without another word and exited the facility.

She turned and looked at the two guards and with a half smile spoke, “Well, that was an adventure.” The two looked at her, both shaking their heads. “All the same, it’s probably best that we step aside and let you finish your meal.” One tapped the other on the arm and they walked to the wall right by her table and stood at guard, but she could read the looks of amusement on both their faces.

14: Mixed Minds Kali2

Kali had awoken early and was up on the battlement studying her spell book when Trystan arrived. He smiled and spoke, “Well good morning Kali, good to see you up and refreshed.” She looked up and smiled shyly, closing the book and rubbing her finger down the spine as she hissed a word of magic. The runes encircled themselves on the cover and she tucked it neatly into her robes. The book disappeared without an indication that it was in there and Trystan could only shake his head in wonder. She stood and walked over to him, her voice was quiet, “Trystan, about last night…” He stopped her and spoke despite the annoyed look on her face at being interrupted, “Kali please, I don’t know what you remember, but I did nothing inappropriate. You asked me to remove the dress, and I did so that we could cool you off, but I assure you that I kept my hands to myself otherwise.” She furrowed her brow slightly, “I was not out of it Trystan, I am fully aware of what did and did not happen. There is just the matter of this situation, how realistic is it to face all this and pursue love as if nothing is going on around us.”

He looked at her and smiled, “How about simply to have something worth fighting for?” She shoke her head slightly, taken aback at his simple answer. She was dumb struck and simply stood there, looking up at him. He reached out and places his hands gently on her shoulders just above the bicep, “Kali, on my honor, I have nothing but good intentions between us. Yes, you are beautiful beyond any woman I have ever seen, yes, I would give everything to be with you, yes, there is a war on our horizon, and yes, I think it is worth the pursuit.”

She stepped back and spoke, her eyes scanning his face, “You would give up everything? Everything? Even your Knight hood?” He cocked his head slightly and looked at her, speaking, “Are you asking me too?” She regarded him and spoke, “I didn’t say that, you made the statement, that you would give up everything to be with me, so would you?”

He paused a moment and then spoke, “Yes.”

She looked at him, her porcelain perfect face cracked the slightest smile as she saw in his eyes that there was no lie in them, and she walked forward, wrapping her arms around him and burying her face in his chest. He inhaled deeply and felt the warmth of her against him. She withdrew and spoke, “Well, for the record, I am not asking that of you… yet.”

He laughed and shoke his head, “I was right… you are trouble, but certainly not more trouble than you are worth.”

14: Mixed Minds Oldknight

Walter stormed off like an old wet hen. He was furious the mage had dared cast a spell on him. It was all the more reason those sort of beings shouldn’t be trusted. Regardless of what that one stated last night. They were all magic users and therefore they were corrupted to what was really right and wrong in this world.

He would show everyone what hypocrites they all were. Especially that elf bitch and those other two sows that were brought back to Heartlund. And when he proved his point, HE would be the one promoted instead of the three that. Oh yes…..he would make sure of it.

14: Mixed Minds Human

From behind Trystan came the sound of someone clearing their throat softly. When he turned around, he would see Moira, Kellan’s squire standing there. She quickly stood rigid straight and inclined her head respectfully as she handed him the letter Kellan penned before she departed.

”Beg your pardon, Sir Trystan, but Lady Kellan requested I hand this directly to you before she departed this morning on her journey.”

She glanced past him to Kali and smiled slightly as she nodded her head.

”Ma’am.”

Looking back at Trystan, she stood straight once more.

”If that will be all, Sir, I need to get to my studies.”

With a nod from Trystan, Moira turned and slipped away as quietly as she arrived.

14: Mixed Minds -anime10

Saul awoke before dawn, to the faint sound of a snare being sprung and the snap of twigs. He slealthely climbed down from his perch and walked to the sprung snare. There hanging fron the noose was a rabbit. Saul removed the noose and laid the dead creature on the ground. He then filled in the hole, removed the leather thongs, tied one round the rabbit's legs and secured the animal to his belt. Standing he moved to the remaining snares and dismantled them, filling in the holes.

Saul retuned to his campsite where he once again prepared a small fire, skined and cooked the rabbit. After breakfast he disenguished the fire coolonig the coals with water and scattered the ashes. He then spead dirt, twigs and leaves about to remove any evidence that a camsite had existed. As dawn began to break, the dmapness and cold of the morning engulfed him. Looking towards the sky and sniffing ........... "It will be cold today, winter approaches." he thought. Reaching into his knapsack, he removed a coat and put it on. Slinging his back pack over one shoulder and his sword across the other, Saul moved to the edge of the cliff. Gazing out across the plain towards the fortress, he could see to figures on horses departing the gates. Kneeling his removed his spy glass, assembled it and watched as the riders started across the open field. "An Elf, a Ranger by his attire and a Knight." said to himself. "I think these two need to be watched and followed. They may have answers to the questions that fill my mind."

With that Saul disessenbled his spyglass, tucking it in one of the pockets of his coat and beagn his decent to the valley floor.

14: Mixed Minds Sirtrystan

14: Mixed Minds Kali2

Trystan turned at the sound of a feminine voice and saw Moira there. He knew who she was, though they hadn’t spoken all that often, and he smiled curiously as she handed him the letter. “Thank you Moira.”

She spoke again, requesting dismissal and he immediately nodded, speaking to her, “By all means Moira, thank you again for bringing this to me.”

He turned and looked at Kali, shrugging gently as he popped the wax seal and read the words Kellan had written to him. He looked up at Kali who was looking at him curiously.

“She warns me that someone from within might be targeting me.” He looked back at the letter and felt Kali’s hand on his arm, “Do you mind?” He looked at her and saw she was asking if she could read the note, he handed it to her and spoke, “By all means.”

She read the note and looked up at him, her eyes shimmering with a slight concern. “She speaks of your troops, those subordinate to you.” He looked at her with a smile, “How do you know she isn’t speaking about you?” Kali pushed him and spoke back, “For starters I am not part of your inner circle, and secondly, there is NOTHING about you that I am jealous of.”

He laughed aloud and grabbed her, she wiggled away and spun, her hand outstretched, palm facing him as he was about to come in again for a second attempt, “Mind yourself Sir Trystan, she did make one very astute observation, things are NOT as they appear to be.”

He tilted his head to the side and laughed. She backed up a couple more steps until she was against the wall between two arrow ports. He stood upright and glanced from side to side, they were alone. He stepped towards her and she shifted her head to the side as she whispered, “Are you certain this is the path you want to walk?”

“If your lips are the water then quench my thirst.”

She smiled as she grabbed him by the tunic and yanked him into the crevice of the wall with her, their mouths meeting with force and she pressed herself into him aggressively. She could feel the heat within her, the dragon that she kept locked in her heart was stirring again, thrashing its tale and banging at the door. The hinge was breaking, its eyes peering through the bars, freedom was a step away, a single, locked step away. She clutched at the back of his head and her skin began to heat up again. He felt it and began to withdraw but she clutched at him with an unnatural strength, pulling his head in tighter so her teeth cut into his lip. He furrowed his brow and her eyes opened, it was like a fire had been lit behind the pupils and she pushed him away, clutching at her robes again tearing them open. Her skin was red and she breathed deeply in fast, gasping breathes. He stepped towards her and she thrust out her hand to stop him, clutching at the wall. Her skin was so hot it charred the very rock and hissed in protest.

He watched as she slowly refocused herself. Her breathing slowed and she leaned heavily into the wall. He wiped the blood from his lip and took a half step towards her, “What? Why? Why does that keep happening.”

She inhaled deeply, her breathing was raspy and she did not speak, but her finger pointed towards the towers. He turned and looked, the third tower, the tower of shadow and flame, the tower with no master, pulsed and flared as the fire below it burst up and spewed molten rock and gas into the air like a volcano. Finally he heard her voice and he spun quickly, “The tower… it is dark, evil… it is speaking to me, grasping at my bones…”

He was confused and had no idea what to do, he reached for her and picked her up. A guard who had heard the commotion came running up and Trystan turned to him, “Find the Lady Magi, Ceridwyn and Rayann, I know not where they are, but certainly they are still in the Keep. Tell them to meet me at Kali’s room, she has had another reaction to the towers.”

The man saluted sharply and was off in a flash. Trystan carried Kali as swiftly as he could to her room. A patrolling guard went with him and assisted as they got Kali onto her bed. “That will be all, and thank you for the help.”

The guard nodded and saluted as he left. Trystan turned and looked at Kali, her hair was drenched in sweat, the honey blond tendrils clung to her face and forehead. He sat on the bed side and took her hand, patting it gently, “I can hear footsteps coming up the stairs, Ceridwyn and Rayann are coming.”

14: Mixed Minds Mythban2

After they had retired from dinner Myth had walked with Rayann to check on Kali. They were both content knowing that she had gone to bed and was resting soundly. They did not linger longer than they needed to and had retired to their own quarters. Rest that evening was a blessing and Myth did his best to comfort his beloved. The entire ordeal was taxing on them both and Myth was proud of how Rayann had handled herself. He was not happy that they had to but that was the way of things and they both knew this.

The morning sun came early and Myth as always was up and moving. He slipped himself away from the warmth of his bed and wife begrudgingly. He had much to do this day and a slight smile played across his lips as he set a deep red rose from the royal garden on the pillow next to Rayann. Myth was particularly happy as it matched her robes perfectly. His emerald eyes looked his wife up and down and it made him sigh happily. Through everything that has happened since he met her their love remained strong and for that he was grateful. Each day he reflected on his choices he made so long ago and he felt no regret.

Myth dressed in his casual attire and with sword in hand he exited the room. He was greeted by the guards outside and he could only nod silently to them before speaking. "I will be going to the mess hall... I know your duty is to see us around but I would prefer that you both remain here with my wife please." They looked at one another before looking back and nodding. "Our priority is the Lady Rayann m'lord so we will do as you ask."

Myth only nodded his head to them before embarking on his way to the mess hall. Myth certainly drew attention where ever he went but with a couple polite looks and comments he found he could remain a bit unnoticed if he kept in the right places of the mess hall. There was plenty of pleasant conversation to be had but Myth was here for a reason. His eyes watched the mess and in time Sir Walter finally appeared. With a little effort Myth blended in better with those around him which was an amazing feat in and of itself but he remained beneath the man's notice. Soon after Ceridwyn arrived with her escort. He quirked a brow as she insisted they join her and he could only chuckle, but it was soon gone when Sir Walter walked up to the table.

Myth focused in on the conversation and it made him bristle slightly at this human's audacity. He smiled watching Ceridwyn handle things and when Sir Walter left Myth appeared like a silent wraith at her side hand held out. "I think that I shall take Sir Walter's sword Ceridwyn..." He looked at her and she could see a glint in his eye "If you don't mind of course." Myth smiled. He could here guards approaching fast and it made him frown slightly.

14: Mixed Minds Aeolis

14: Mixed Minds LadyKellan

The morning was definitely chilled as Kellan and Aeolis headed out. It was eerie when the gates closed behind them when they finally cleared the protective walls of the Keep and entered the wilderness. There were some people camped out along the border of the Keep and they passed by as quietly as possible. The last thing Kellan wanted to do was wake them from what sleep they were able to receive in these troubled times. AS they moved on, her eyes scanned the make shift homes she saw hastily erected to protect the occupants from the elements. She felt guilty she had a nice warm bed to sleep in with a room that had a fireplace. An uncontrollable shiver slid down her spine as she thought of how they were forced to live now.

As the makeshift campsites began to thin out, Kellan and Aeolis found themselves on the edge of the forest that was just beyond Heartlund’s walls. As they made their way into the canopy of leafless trees and still green evergreens, Kellan felt as though she were traveling into a foreign country as the dark shapes of the trees surrounded her. She had never been afraid of the forest so why was she so apprehensive about it now? Glancing over her shoulder she knew why. Those damn towers had caused all of this and she would be glad to remove them from the horizon once and for all.

She was quiet as they made their way into the trees and finally Aeolis nudged his horse ahead of her then pointed his horse in the direction of Glen Durel and nodded. His voice was quiet when he spoke, making sure it didn’t echo.

”We need to go this way.”

Kellan quirked a brow.

”That’s the direction of Glen Durel.”

Aeolis nodded.

”I know. It is the last place they were seen. I can pick up their trail from there. Hope you are ready for a good ride. And that bag of bones you call a horse can make it.”

With a nudge of his heels into his horses ribs, the horse took off at a rather quick gallop. Kellan blinked but quickly hit her heels against Smokes ribs and he took off after Aeolis. Not that he needed much encouragement. He was attune to his mistresses ways and knew she was anxious to get this trip on the road.

Leaning low in the saddle, Kellan felt the frigid air rush by her as she galloped fast with Aeolis leading the way. She could feel the urgency in the air and knew they had to find this Bad Rock as quickly as they could. She could feel the weight of the coin that had been packed on her horse for the payment of his services and wanted to be rid of it. The last thing she needed was to be a target of roadside brigands.

14: Mixed Minds RayannRed

Rayann was tending to Shaer and smiling at the single red rose she placed in the vase Myth left for her on his pillow when she felt a sudden heat and pain wash over her. It was so intense that even Shaer felt it and let his mother know it was very uncomfortable. As he began to squirm and fuss in her arms, she felt an urgency within her like something wanted out of her and now. One of the twin Elven guards noticed her distress and quickly took Shaer from her arms, handing the child off to the other twin for protection. The twin knelt down next to her as she clutched at her stomach feeling an intense wave of nausea now replace the heat she felt.

”Are you alright, my lady?”

His strangely accented words barely reached her mind and she turned to look at him with an odd look. When he reached out his hand to help steady her he felt the heat in her touch. While it wasn’t as intense as Kali’s he could definitely feel the difference.

Finally Rayann closed her eyes and her lips moved as silent words were spoken. Soon her breathing calmed and the grip she had on his hand grew cooler and began to loosen. She was just getting to her feet when a panicked knock sounded on her door.

“Lady Rayann. Come quickly to Lady Kali’s quarters. Sir Trystan sends word you should get there urgently.”

Rayann looked at the guards and then at Shaer. They both nodded knowing what to do. With hastened steps, Rayann left her room and headed for Kali’s. Along the way she met Ceridwyn as she was rushing down the hall headed for Kali’s room as well.

”Something’s happening with her and the Tower, Ceri. I can feel it. And I think I know what it is….and I’m more frightened than ever.”

Rayann was still queasy when she burst into Kali’s room and seeing her daughter’s prone, nearly naked form and her robes ripped open, with Trystan kneeling next to her, Rayann’s mind began to whirl. Furrowing her brows, she spoke to Trystan as she practically pushed him out of the way and knelt next to Kali.

”What happened? Please tell me you didn’t tear her robes like this.”

She saw how red Kali’s skin was and could see steam coming off her body. Now more than ever she knew her worst nightmare was coming true. Somehow Kali was connected to that last Tower. But why? Reaching out and taking Kali’s hot hand in her own, Rayann ignored the pain and spoke softly to Kali as her hands trembled.

”Kali….I’m here darling. I’m not going anywhere child of mine.”

Rayann was beside herself and she wasn’t sure what to do. She’d never dealt with anything like this before and as she looked at Ceri, the deep concern in her eyes was unmistakable.

14: Mixed Minds Ceribanner

Ceridwyn turned and smiled softly as Myth was suddenly beside her, she stood and nodded respectfully speaking, “My Prince.”

She looked down at the sword, and then back to him, she smiled and shoke her head speaking in Elven, “Do what you will with it Myth’alas, I am certain any action you will do with it out weighs what an over worked Commander can do.”

She handed him the sword and was about to invite him to sit with her when suddenly she clutched at her chest and reached up grabbing his shoulder. She turned deathly pale and looked around sharply, her face going green she reached for a trash bin and vomited everything she had just eaten. Myth grabbed her and steadied her back to feet. One of her guards handed her a towel and she wiped her mouth, thanking him with a soft nod. She looked at Myth and whispered, “Forgive me my Prince.”

Suddenly her face went pale again, but this time he could see in her eyes that something was amiss. She turned her eyes up to him and whispered, “Kali.”

They streaked through the halls as fast as they could, the guards clattering along behind them and they met Rayann inbound on the same path. As the lot of them came up the stairs Rayann was the first through the door and instantly started berating Trystan. He shuffled back as Rayann shoved him aside and he turned to look at Ceridwyn, the look in his eyes said all that needed to be said.

She spoke to Rayann’s mind, ~ “Calm Rayann, Trystan was aiding her.” ~

Rayann was barely paying attention to anything except her daughter, and Ceridwyn stepped back, looking around the room, observing everything within. It was perfectly in order. She looked over Rayann’s shoulder froma distance and saw the red color Kali’s skin. She inhaled deeply and turned to look at Trystan, whispering softly, “Thank you for assisting her the way you did.” She could not help but notice he small cut on his lip and the specks of dried blood on his chin, she looked at them with curiousity.

14: Mixed Minds Sirtrystan

14: Mixed Minds Kali2

Kali’s voice was gravely but understandable, she was back on the downswing of the event and recovering almost as quickly as things had happened. As Rayann shoved Trystan aside and made a sideways accusation Kali reached up and grabbed her mother’s robes, “I did it mother, the heat… I couldn’t stand it. Trystan did nothing to me, not that he could if he wanted to.”

With a forced smile she looked over at Trystan and then turned back to Rayann. “The towers, they are stirring.”

She looked at her mother’s eyes and then looked over at Ceridwyn, she could see they were both feeling it too and she simply nodded, saving her energy instead of explaining it. She closed her eyes and laid back heavily into her pillow, bringing her hand up and speaking to whomever would hear, “Can I get a towel please so I can wipe my face?”

Trystan reached and grabbed a towel, he was turning and saw that Rayann was already on her feet, she was still giving him a somewhat curt look and he handed it to her, stepping back sheepishly. Rayann turned and attended to Kali who spoke softly, “Please mother, stop fussing over me, it is passing, I will be fine.”

Trystan turned and saw Myth hovering at the foot of the bed looking every bit the protective Lion watching his Pride. Trystan walked over to him and spoke respectfully, “On my honor sir, I swear, I did not touch her.”

14: Mixed Minds Mythban2

The look on Myth's face was grim as he entered the room. Rayann was reacting as he would expect and when he saw the state of Kali's dress he understood why. Myth was capable of being a little more level headed and he knew that the fact Trystan was still standing there breathing meant that this was not his doing. The heat in the room was different and he felt the hair on his neck standing on end again. This had to be something related to the towers. This also meant what ever was happening was outside his ability to help with. He stood there at his daughter's bedside watching all.

He barely looked to Trystan as he spoke and after a few moments of thought Myth nodded his head slightly. He took note of the wound on the man;s lip and the blood but said nothing about it. "I am not in need of reassuring Sir Trystan... If I thought any of this had been your doing you would not have had the time to explain yourself to me." It was clear by Myth's tone this was spoken out of hand and not meant as a threat. It was a simple statement of truth.

"I would wager we will want to inform the lady of the keep what has transpired." Myth now looked at Trystan. He was still holding Sir Walter's blade and looked down upon it. His eyes shifted to his wife and Ceridwyn as Kali tried to assure then the episode was over. He looked back at Trystan for a moment regarding the human looking deep into the man's soul before returning to his daughter's side brandishing a soft smile. He placed a hand on Rayann's shoulder but looked at Kali. "She is your mother Kali... try as she might she is going to fuss as is her instinct to do so."

He offered a smile and turned his attention to shooing out the undesirables from the room. "All right... the mages need room to think and discuss I'm afraid we will all have to take our leave... myself included." Myth looked back with that knowing look letting his wife and daughter know that if they needed him to call.

14: Mixed Minds RayannRed

Rayann knew she was quite possibly overreacting but to see Kali in the state she was she couldn’t help it. She was, after all, the young woman’s mother. She pushed some errant hair from Kali’s hot brow and smiled as reassuringly as she could as she spoke softly to Kali.

”Sh…..don’t waste your energy, Kali. We’ll clear everything up as soon as you’re feeling better again. I’m sure Trystan wouldn’t do anything to harm you.”

She glanced up at Ceri and saw how pale her dear friend was looking and knew the towers were affecting her just as badly. If this was what it was going to be like for the magi of Krynn every time they grew near the towers, she wondered if they would even be able to stand against them.

AS Kali asked for the towel, Rayann rose to her feet and met Trystan half way. When he handed her the towel, she merely nodded then placed the towel on Kali’s brow. AS she held her daughters hand Rayann cast a spell that brought a cooling sensation the bed Kali rested on to try and help her daughter through this terrible affliction she was suffering.

”I can’t help but fuss over you, Kali. You’re my daughter. It pains me to see you like this. I’m thinking of having Nol take you back to Glen Durel to at least put some space between you and these dreaded towers. At least there we could build up the wardings to protect you from their affects.”

It was clear Rayann was extremely worried about Kali and her reaction to these towers. It was worse on her than any of the others. And this heat she was suffering was not good for her physical well being. If they didn’t find a way of controlling it, Kali could very well die from damage occurring internally from the extreme heat.

She looked over at Ceri once more then to Myth then at Trystan before she looked back to Kali. She felt as if she were loosing Kali in a most unpleasant way and there was nothing she could do to prevent it from happening. And she felt totally helpless.

The reassuring touch of Myth’s hand on her shoulder let Rayann know her husband and Kali’s father was just as concerned for his daughter and Rayann was. When he ushered out the gathered crowd, she was grateful for the gesture and looked back at him just before he closed the door to leave her, Ceri and Kali to their privacy. She glanced at Ceri again and spoke to her mind.

~What am I to do, Ceri?~

14: Mixed Minds Aeolis

14: Mixed Minds LadyKellan

Aeolis had been pushing his mount rather hard when he finally pulled to a stop near a swift running stream just inside a grove of trees just off the well traveled path they were traveling. Both horses were winded and Kellan’s horse was having to handle the extra weight of the coin that had been given for her to negotiate with Bad Rock. He slid easily from the saddle and let the horse have a good drink. He took a good drink himself and stood back up then felt a most uneasy feeling wash over him.

He closed his eyes and took several deep breaths as he worked to help this terrible feeling pass by. When he opened his eyes he saw Kellan looking at him with a concerned look on her features. Smoke was taking a drink from the stream himself and Kellan stretching her legs when she noticed the look on Aeolis’ face. Something was not well with the Elf.

”Aeolis? Are you OK?”

He nodded.

”Yes. There is a disturbance in the magical force of Krynn and thusly I am affected as well. All Elves are but those who are magi are affected even more. I am certain Ceridwyn is most ill right now.”

And I am not there to help ease her discomfort is what he wanted to say but he didn’t. He had a mission to complete and the sooner he found Bad Rock, the sooner he could return to Ceri.

Kellan watched the Elf then nodded when he reassured her he would be fine. She couldn’t imagine what it was like to feel this magical force and to have it upset someone this badly. For once, she was very glad she was ignorant to the use of magic.

Aeolis looked back at Kellan again then eased back into the saddle.

”Come, Kellan, we need to keep moving.”

Kellan quickly mounted up again and patted Smoke’s neck as she touched her heels into his ribs and took off at a breakneck pace behind Aeolis once more.

14: Mixed Minds Mage2

Pela had been in the most foul moods since the terrible disturbance that caused her to get sick when the towers were created. As she learned to protect herself from the terrible affects the towers had on her she grew more sociable and returned to the happy person Bad Rock had brought her up to be. She had even taken up learning her magical skills again.

All of it seemed for naught the past couple days when she fell ill once more and struggled to build up her defenses against the affects. She looked at Bad Rock with dark circles around her eyes as she spoke softly to him.

”Is there no place in all of Krynn we can go that I won’t get sick, father? I detest feeling like this. It takes me a few days to finally get to the point where I can function again. And I can see you are not feeling very sprite yourself.”

She reached over and touched Bad Rocks huge arm lovingly then rested her head against that same arm and closed her eyes as she fought against the urge to vomit.

”I just want it to go away.”

14: Mixed Minds Sirtrystan

Trystan looked over at Myth and nodded as the man spoke so matter of factly. He never took insult, nor did he feel threatened, but he was certain that he never wished to cross swords with the Elven Prince outside of the practice arena and decided to keep his mouth shut for now.

Myth began to usher people out of the room and Trystan was more than happy to comply. He went straight away to Commander Roses quarters. Luckily enough she was just concluding a meeting when he arrived and as her Paige stood to address Trystan he lifted his hand to shush the man and spoke directly to Rose.

“Commander, something is happening with the towers.”

Rose gestured for him to come inside without a word and went in immediately, sitting across from her chair at the desk. She walked around and sat, regarding him quietly with her knowing eyes and he explained all that had happened without skipping a detail, this was not the time for withholding information.

14: Mixed Minds Ceribanner

14: Mixed Minds Kali2

Kali looked up at her mother and though they had only been together 18 months she knew better than to argue. She took the towel and as her Father practically pushed everyone out of the room she snuck a glance to Trystan. It was a thankful glance for what he had done and he acknowledged it. As soon as the door clicked she turned to Ceridwyn and Rayann, her face was beginning to get some of the color back in it.

Ceridwyn looked at Rayann as she spoke to her mind and responded, ~ “What can any of us truly do Rayann? Obviously this is affecting Kali more than you or I, but ultimately we have all been powerless to negate its affects.” ~

She sat heavily in one of the chairs in the room and looked over at Kali and Rayann, her mind was obviously searching for answers and she kept mumbling quietly to herself as her thoughts came out her mouth. Kali had managed to sit up and was reattaching her robes to her body, the ties were torn from there settings and she sighed heavily, “As if it wasn’t enough that I am getting hot flashes from the Abyss, but now I have torn my own robes.”

She stood, obviously she was feeling better and she went across the room to the dressing table. She grabbed a small sewing kit that was in one of the drawers and fumbled through it, removing a needle and some red thread that almost matched the color of her robes. She removed the robes from her body and sat on the bed, laying them over her lap. She began to mend her clothing when Ceridwyn finally spoke.

“Obviously, the towers are affecting us, of that there is no question, but the real wonder is how?”

Kali looked up and spoke, her voice was back to normal, “It’s the ambient magic. It is not destroying the divine magic however, it’s more, absorbing it.”

Rayann and Ceridwyn turned and looked at her and she continued, “When I would cast ambient magic, I would actually sever the energy of divine magic and redirect its power to enhance my own spells, but this feeling is different, it’s as if the magic is being sucked into a vacuum and being collected. But the phenomenon is only happening at the third tower.”

She paused and stared off into space, lost in thought. After a moment she turned back and looked at them. “I mentioned that the tower has no master, I saw it clear as day, the towers of flame and shadow have Fifth and Piramay but the third tower has no one controlling it. However, it is looking for a master, and that is where the weakness in the whole structure lies. As long as the tower stands uncontrolled it is vulnerable.”

She looked at the two of them and shrugged slightly. “That is my thoughts on the situation anyway.”

14: Mixed Minds BadrockBanner

Bad Rock looked up and smiled uneasily as he daughter laid her head on his arm. He patted her gently on the head, his massive hand completely covering it. His touch was so gentle however she would barely feel his strength, “I know my little Pela, we are both feeling this illness.”

He looked up and out from their lodging on the hillside. It was well hidden and sat over a small Hamlet where they could buy what they needed to survive. After the battle at Glen Durel he had managed to get them here and set things up, but he looked apprehensively at his money bag laying on the table beside them. They were getting low on money, and he was certainly not about to go to the Dark Queen after their failure, that was a certain death sentence.

He shifted and looked Pela in the eyes, “Are you hungry? I am hungry. The nausea is settling, would you mind going into town and getting us some lunch?”

He smiled at her, his gruff face scared and aged from his many years. Though they had been here months he had never gone to town himself, they both understood what a mess it would make of things for him to show up in a human settlement.

14: Mixed Minds RayannRed

Rayann watched her daughter as she recovered from the hot flashes she had suffered. As Kali got up and started repairing her robes, Rayann sat on the bed and tries to figure out what could be done to protect Kali from what the towers were doing to her daughter. She listened to Ceri and Kali as they explained what was happening and why. As Kali let them know what was occurring, Rayann couldn’t help but ask out loud.

”Collecting it for what? And why? And why is it affecting you so much more than Ceri and I?”

Rayann spoke aloud her worst fear.

”I fear the tower is trying to attach itself to you for some reason, Kali. The fact you spent many years under Fifth’s tutelage, it’s possible it’s making some kind of connection with you. If that‘s the case……”

She looked over at Kali and Ceri.

”That’s MY thought on the situation.”

14: Mixed Minds Mage2

Pela lifted her head and smiled as she looked into Bad Rocks black eyes.

”I will be glad to go into town and get you something to eat, Father. I think it might be good for me to get some fresh air.”

She got up from where she was seated next to Bad Rock and walked over to the table and looked at the thin money purse that held their finances in it and furrowed her brows. They had very little left and they needed to find some income soon or they would find themselves starving.

She gathered up a few of the coins and tucked them into the small purse she wore on her belt and picked up the burlap bags she used to carry her things back to their home. She needed to get enough food to sustain Bad Rock and herself. No one ever questioned why she bought raw meat and some cooked food, they just assumed she was getting something to eat now and getting raw meat to cook for meals later. Walking over and kissing Bad Rock’s broad cheek, she patted his arm once more then headed for the door.

”I’ll be back within our time frame, father. Rest and when I get back, I’ll make sure you have enough to eat to fill your belly.”

She heard Bad Rock’s deep rumbling chuckle as she stepped out into the air and closed the door behind her. It was a crisp, cold day and while others shuddered from the cold, Pela embraced it. She felt the chill but it didn’t affect her like it did others. She found comfort in the solitude the colder weather brought.

The small town was only a short distance away and when she reached the outskirts of it, she paused and looked around. The market area had some people walking about but nothing out of the ordinary. Making sure there was no one close to the area she was about to emerge from she stepped out and started walking around the market area.

Many of the merchants recognized her and smiled as she walked by. She was always very cordial to them and had even struck up conversation with her but she never got too close to any of them, When you started getting close to someone, they asked questions she didn’t want to answer so to keep from having to lie, she avoided the situation entirely.

The merchant she always bought fresh fruit and vegetables from was there. And elderly man who seemed hunched over all the time. He gave her a wrinkle faced smile and gestured to his thin selection.

“I’m afraid I don’t have much of a selection today, my dear. The colder weather is not conducive for growing fruits and vegetables. But….I did manage to save these for you. I had a feeling you would be returning today.”

From under his cart he brought a small bunch of carrots and three beautiful, bright red apples. Pela’s ice blue eyes lit up and she smiled as she reached out to take the offered items.

“Thank you so much.”

The man smiled broadly again.

“No need to thank me. The look on your face is thanks enough.”

Pela smiled as she placed the items in her bag then reached into her purse to withdraw some coins. She counted her coins again and the smile slowly left her face. She pulled out a coin and handed it to the man.

”I’m afraid I don’t have enough for more than what the items are worth.”

The man patted her hand and smiled warmly.

“Consider this a gift, my dear. Just to see your smiling face is plenty of payment.”

Pela furrowed her brow as she withdrew her hand then chewed on her bottom lip. The old man was barely able to make it on what he had. When he turned his back to get something, Pela stepped closer then dropped the coin in his pocket. Satisfied she had done her good deed for the day, she wished him well then went on her way searching the other vendors for anything she could buy.

Finally she reached the butcher. The man furrowed his brow as he saw her approach. There was something about her that he disliked. Even though she hadn’t done anything to him and always paid. Her eyes were strange and because of that, he thought her some sort of witch or something like that.

“I suppose you want the usual.”

Pela nodded.

”Yes, please. Will it be ready within the hour?”

He nodded.

“Yeah.”

Pela nodded then reached into her purse and withdrew the amount of coin she would need and handed it to the man. He took her money, checked to make sure she paid the required amount then slid the coins into his pocket.

Pela nodded again then turned and made her way around the market place once more. She had some time to kill so she would do it in the fresh air of the market area.

14: Mixed Minds -anime11

Saul made his way, cautiously out onto the plain, kneeling in the field he slowly traced his cloved fingers acroos the hoof prints of both horses, examining them closely. "They are in a hurry, and one that trails behind, is layden more heavily than the other." he thought as his fingers traced the deeper inprints from the hooves. Lifting his fingers and his gaze in the direction of the parting horses.

"Could it be just the added weight of the armour, the Knight wore?" he thought as his fingers once again traced the imprints. Saul looked up again, lifting his fingers and standing. "They make haste in the direction of Glen Durel." He said softly to himself in barely a whisper. Saul then began to run following the horse tracks towards the woodlands that lay ahead. At the edge of the forest Saul stopped, dropped and lay prone in a slight depression. Crawling on his stomach up the rise until just his head was at the crest of the rise. Tilting his head sidways he slowly peered over the edge of the rise. His head would appear only as a rock outcropping or perhaps a stump from a distance.

14: Mixed Minds Kali2

Kali turned and looked at Rayann as she spoke. Nodding quietly it was obvious that she had not revealed everything she knew and as her eyes drifted from Rayann to Ceridwyn she started speaking. Her hands went slack and rested on her robes without moving and she seemed to be staring off into the distance at something which wasn’t there. “The tower is attempting to connect with me. It calls to me, softly, every time I get these hot flashes I can hear its voice, neither masculine or feminine. It speaks my name and gnaws at me to gaze at it.” She turned her head up and looked at Ceridwyn and Rayann, the look of horror on both their faces gave her pause and she continued, “I don’t know why.” She turned and looks at her mother, “Perhaps it is because of my connection with Fifth, or perhaps it’s that I already know how to wield this kind of magic and it recognizes that, it’s hard to say as we know very little about the spells that were used, and the nature of their power. Using human souls to power a spell, that is something which Fifth never taught me, and for good reason, I respected and hated him all at the same time, and he knew it. He taught me what the Dark Queen instructed but nothing more. My talent in the ambient astounded him and he is smart enough to have kept some cards up his sleeve for the day I turned on him, because we both knew I was going to turn on him.”

She looked up again. The revelation of this was shocking to both of them, she could see it. She nodded in confirmation of what she just said and shrugged slightly in a matter of fact gesture, “It’s true I was after his position. He is the top wizard in the Dark Queens arsenal and I wanted the job, in fact I was being groomed for it, but an unnatural being who has lived hundreds of years and is capable of indefinite life by utilizing the life force of the innocent wasn’t about to give up his place without a fight. He knew my intent as much as if I had flat out told him. He had access to my mind nearly every day as we trained, surly he had found my thoughts on the matter, it was obvious in the way he treated me. Keep your enemies closer as the saying goes.”

She stood and laid her robes on the bed. Nearly naked she walked to the window and looked out across the city, her back to her mother and Ceridwyn. She inhaled deeply as her shoulders rose and fell with her breath. She spoke again, “Don’t concern yourself with me however, I am working on mind blocks that will counter the effects of the towers sway.”

14: Mixed Minds Ceribanner

Ceridwyn listened and exchanged multiple glances of concern with Rayann. Finally Ceridwyn stood and finished speaking and Ceridwyn responded almost immediately. “Kali! When will you learn it is OK to accept help, especially from those who love you and have your best interests in mind?”

Kali spun around and half glared at her, but her expression softened almost as quickly as it had appeared, “Kali, your mother loves you, I love you. We don’t want harm to come to you as much as you don’t. Why can’t you find it in yourself to trust us?” She knew the answer before she heard Kali speak it, “Trust is not something I have ever learned to do. There is no trusting anyone in the Dark Queen’s army, if you trust you become the victim of their ascent to the top. That’s the atmosphere she creates, the weak die while the strongest devour their way to the top. That is how you gain favor, that is how you lead her armies, you murder and kill your way into her graces.” She inhaled deeply and looked at them both, her skin was still softly pink, but nearly back to its normal pale color, “But you are right Ceridwyn, I need to trust you despite my instincts.”

Ceridwyn looked over at Rayann with a smile, they had finally had their first break through with Kali and the expression on Ceridwyn’s face could not mask her inner joy. Looking back at Kali she smiled, “Then I suggest we begin right away, we don’t know when the next flare up will occur.”

Kali looked at her and bit her lower lip gently, “I know how to keep them from happening, and how to test your wardings when they are in place.”

Pela enjoyed walking through the market place. She found a few things to admire. In particular was a necklace. It was the symbol of a snow flake suspended on a delicate looking chain. For some reason it caught the light and seemed to dance with life of its own as it dangled from the wooden display. The merchant tried to talk her into buying it and if her finances had been better she would have, but as they were now, she couldn’t afford anything extra.

She saw a pair of metal bands that would have fit around Bad Rocks curved horns but again she had to resist the urge to purchase them for him. While she wanted to shower him with a gift or two, she knew eating was her top priority right now. Finally the time came for her to return to the butcher and when she walked in, the man scowled as he always did when he saw her. Pela never knew why the man appeared to not like her. She had never done anything to him and had always paid for her purchases.

He wiped his hands off on his bloody apron then walked over and picked up the butchered meat and handed it to her. He had it wrapped haphazardly but Pela was able to put the meat in her sacks easily. She purchased two goats, two sheep and four chickens for her father. Some he would eat today and the rest she would deep freeze and store for him on other days.

Her sacks was well weighted down but she seemed to manage just fine with them. She thanked the man again then turned and left. She made her way back through the town and eased onto the path in the forest she traveled when she was close to the town. She’d been walking for a short distance when she heard some shuffling around her. Stopping and listening closely, she recognized the sound of footsteps around her. Furrowing her brows, she started walking once more.

She had gotten a little further when the owner of those footsteps appeared before her a few feet away. He was grimy from head to tow. His winter clothing made of fur was matted and she could smell him from where she stood. When he made a leering smile at her she could see his teeth were black and rotting. He sported several weapons and he had a dagger in his hand, fidgeting with it just so she could seehe had it.

“Well, well, well. Wot we got ‘ere? Looks t’me likes you gots some heavy packages you do. What do you think boys?”

From behind Pela two more men appeared. She glanced over each shoulder to see them leering at her in the same way and they were as bad looking as the man before her. One of them was even rubbing his crotch and licking his lips as he looked her up and down.

“I think we gots us a purty girl.”

“You shouldn’t be out here by yerself. Ya never know who ya gonna run into.”

Pela took a deep breath and let it out in an annoyed manner then slowly set her bags down onto the ground. Looking down, she smoothed out her skirt then looked up at the one who appeared to be the leader before her.

”You should heed your own warning, gentlemen. You never know who you will run into out here.”

He leader arched his brows and laughed then pushed off the tree he was leaning against to walk slowly towards her.

“Will ya listen t’that boys? She’s actually got some spine, this one. I likes them kind. They puts up a good fight.”

Behind her Pela heard the other two laugh as well

“Makes it more fun fer us, that’s fer sure.”

Pela shook her head.

”It will not be much of a good fight. I will kill you all before you will lay a hand upon me.”

The leader stopped and looked at her not sure he should believe her or not. He glanced at the other two and saw them furrowing their brows and looking at him to see how he was going to handle the situation now. He knew he had to do something or he would lose his leadership over them thus losing income. He leered at her again and started walking towards her again.

“Is that right? A sweet, little fing like you is gonna kill all three of us? Now this I gots to see.”

He lunged at Pela aming to stab her with the dagger he held in his hands. Pela reached out with her right hand and quickly side stepped to the left avoiding the attack. Grabbing his right wrist his arm instantly crystallized into ice and his eyes went wide as he felt the pain of his arm. Pela raised her left arm then slammed her elbow down onto the newly crystallized arm and it shattered into thousands of pieces. The man screamed and fell backwards.

The other two men saw their leader in trouble and charged at Pela. Her right hand shot out followed quickly by her left hand and ice spikes flew at the men with such intensity they were thrown backwards a few feet. They were dead before they ever hit the ground. The spikes had pierced their bodies through and through in several places leaving gaping, bleeding holes in their wake.

The man who lost his arm withered on the ground as he felt the pain of losing his limb brought him. He cried and muttered incoherently. Pela turned to look at him and tilted her head. Walking over to him, she stood over him and watched him cower from her as he tried desperately to stop the blood from escaping the severed area on his shoulder. She watched him for several moments and as he begged for his life.

“P-please….don’t k-kill me. Please…..I swear. I won’t do anything bad…again…please….don’t kill me….”

Pela furrowed her brows and shook her head.

”You are pathetic. First you threaten me then you try to attack me and when I defend myself against you, you want me to spare your life? If you need to earn money then you should not steal from others. Earn it by working for it like I have to. Too bad you will not get the chance.”

The mans eyes grew wide with fear and he made a feeble attempt to escape her but they both knew Pela had the advantage. She moved closer and whispered soft, spidery words of magic as though she were whispering to a lover. The man’s face turned from sheer terror to agonizing pain and he screamed as the pain intensified. Inside his body, all of his internal organs were slowly being frozen. Finally the mans voice was no more and Pela looked down at him again and her words were dripping with venom.

”Like you said, you never know who you will run into out here. Too bad you had to learn this lesson the hard way.”

With another annoyed sigh, Pela smoothed out her skirts once again then walked over to pick up her sacks and continue on her way. She actually hummed softly a catchy little tune Bad Rock taught her years ago. When she arrived home, she walked in and set the sacks down then hurried over to give her father a tight hug (as best as she could anyway). Looking up at him and smiling brightly, she spoke with a lightheartedness she hadn’t had in some time.

”I have returned, Father. And I have brought you some tasty meals. I got you goat, sheep and some chickens to snack on.”

14: Mixed Minds RayannRed

Rayann listened to Kali’s words and felt her heart constrict in her chest. She taught her daughter to love but she had yet to learn to trust. Even after everything. IN the back of Rayann’s mind she knew why her daughter had trouble learning to trust. She’d spent many years in an environment where trust was a weakness and only a few months in a nurturing, loving and caring environment. But it still hurt to know Kali still didn’t trust her.

To think her daughter was suffering like this and didn’t want to tell her mother or seek help from her was almost too much for Rayann to take. She’d tried to give Kali the space she needed but now, she had to step up and be a mother as well as a friend to her daughter. At least Ceri had put it plain enough that Kali was able to understand trusting her mother and Ceri was not a weakness. She walked over to where Kali stood and lovingly touched her daughters shoulder knowing Kali would be able to feel the love Rayann felt for her in that simple touch.

”Kali….there comes a time in our lives when we realize that while we’re independent we still need help from time to time from those who love us. Please….don’t shut me out any more. I could feel your blocking of me and I didn’t want to pry and give you privacy. But I have to say, I can’t stand by idly and watch you go through this anymore. It’s not weak of you to accept or even seek help from us. We love you and want to help protect you from what’s happening to you.”

The tension that had been building within Rayann regarding all of this melted away and she was finally able to understand why her daughter had been holding back. They at least had a clue as to what was happening and now they had to work at protecting Kali from the towers influence. As Kali said she had a way to keep them from happening and how to test the wardings, Rayann quirked a brow.

”Dare I ask how?”

14: Mixed Minds Aeolis

14: Mixed Minds LadyKellan

Aeolis and Kellan rode hard for the remainder of the day. They stopped just long enough to eat some dried meat, a piece of bread with cheese and drink some more water and give the horses some rest before they were headed out again. The familiar lands of Glen Durel were coming into sight as the sun was beginning to set.

The sky was awash with brilliant colors of amber, orange, red and lavender when Aeolis slowed the horses pace and found a grove of thick trees with enough evergreens in it to set up a makeshift camp. He went to get some dinner for them as Kellan set the camp up. Like before she removed the horses saddles and set them near the small fire pit then laid out their bed rolls. The horses were grateful for the rest and Kellan rubbed them both down to make sure they were going to be OK.

The bags that held the money were secured under her saddle and well out of sight in case they got company. While Aeolis assured her they were relatively safe on the outskirts of the castle, Glen Durel was not immune to travelers on the outskirts. The wardings kept strangers from reaching too close to the castle, but everything outside the wardings was like any other place.

When Aeolis returned with two rabbits already field dressed and ready to go, Kellan placed them on spits over the fire so they could cook adding a few spices from her supplies to them. As the rabbits cooked, she and Aeolis checked their weapons once more to make sure they were good to go. They sat in relative silence until the meat was done and Kellan carefully sliced some off and handed it to the Elf.

”One never truly appreciates a good meal with the luxury of plates and utensils until one has to eat in the wilds with their fingers, eh?”

Kellan chuckled softly and nodded.

”No truer words were ever spoken. I do l ike rabbit, but I like it better with a variety of vegetables served with it.”

Aeolis smiled as he chewd.

”Then I shall endure to locate some wild vegetables for you next time.”

Kellan laughed softly and shook her head.

”No, no….it’s quite alright. Warm rabbit is better than dried meat, stale, cold bread and cheese any day.”

Aeolis laughed softly as well and nodded.

”As you said, no truer words were spoken

14: Mixed Minds BadrockBanner

Bad Rock waited at the cave they had taken to inhabit many months past. It was not much, but it was well camouflaged thanks to the entrance shelter they had constructed and since the cold didn’t really bother either of them there was never a need for a fire which would signal others they were there. He fussed with their belongings, unpacking and repacking everything, a ritual he did daily to keep himself busy, he always told Pela it was good to be prepared if they had to leave in a moment’s notice, but she could see through it, he was fidgety and needed something to occupy his hands. She had from time to time brought him large chunks of wood that he carved into sometimes scary and other times whimsical caricatures and these functioned as the only real decoration in the place.

While she was gone he also went out and gathered more grasses and dead leaves, repacking Pela’s make shift bed which was really nothing more than a blanket covering a pile. He himself preferred the hard ground and as such his bed roll consisted of nothing more than a single thin blanket.

He heard a faint scream in the distance and looked up towards the direction of the Hamlet. He didn’t think much of it as he went back to keeping himself busy. 20 minutes later Pela came in and hugged him. He brushed her short, snow white hair and spoke, “Thank you my Pela, I wish I could go to town with you but it would more than compromise our staying here. The woods are full of dangerous men and though I know you are capable of taking care of yourself a Father is want to worry about his child. I am glad you made it back safely.”

He smiled and stepped back, his finger brushing the side of her head as he looked at her lovingly. His stomach growled loudly and he looked at her with a funny expression. She laughed and went back out to fetch the goat. He smiled hungrily and grabbed the beast by the neck, it bleeted and protested but he turned it around so that Pela couldn’t see the kill (a courtesy that he always did though he never knew she didn’t care to watch the beasts die). Snapping the goats neck he looked over his shoulder and smiled as he turned his whole body back around, the limp meal in his hand. He began to eat the goat whole with no regard for fur or hoof. As they sat and ate in relative silence he watched her, his eyes focused on her delicate face. “You know daughter, we might have to consider resorting to hunting in a few weeks, which consequently means we will have to move to a more remote area. The humans in the hamlet and outlying farms would discover me quickly. No doubt there are many skilled hunters and trackers in the area trying to survive themselves.”

He turned and looked at the thin money bag, “I just don’t see us making it more than three weeks with the coin we have left.”

14: Mixed Minds Kali2

Kali looked at Rayann and blushed, her cheeks becoming pink and warm. She raised her eyebrows and simply looked at Rayann. She lifted the mental blocks in her mind and Rayann would feel what Kali felt for Trystan, if even just for a brief moment. The feeling was breath taking, like nothing Rayann would have ever felt from her regarding Nol. With a slight twist to her lower lip she put the mental blocks back in place and it would become very clear to Rayann why Kali had been blocking parts of her mind from Rayann, she was so deeply in love with the man she pretended to hate that she was embarrassed.

She turned and looked at a very confused Ceridwyn and simply spoke, “I am in love with a Knight of Solamnia… there, YES, it’s finally out.” She laughed through her shame and smacked her hand on the desk. “Now we all know, Kali is in love.”

She laughed nervously again and then turned to the two ladies in the room as she leaned back on the desk. “So, if you put some wardings on my mind all I need to do is kiss the man and get my heart rate up, both times these episodes have occurred has been right after I tried to suck his teeth out of his mouth.”

14: Mixed Minds Ceribanner

Ceridwyn watched and could not fully understand the exchange going on between the mother and daughter but finally Rayann’s face turned such a shade of red Ceridwyn’s eyebrows perked up and she looked at Kali with a half smile. As Kali looked at her and spoke she laughed and shoke her head, “Well, well, well… she does have feelings after all.” With a wink she stood up and walked over to Kali.

Then we should begin, I will prepare the spell with your mother, I think I have figured out what we can do to shield you but it will take some time to prepare. I would think we can probably do it this evening if your mother and I work all day.

She turned and looked at Rayann with a smile as she spoke to Kali, “In the meantime young one, don’t go kissing any handsome Knights.”

14: Mixed Minds Mage2

Pela watched Bad Rock as he enjoyed his meal. While his meals turned others stomachs, Pela saw it as a natural, everyday occurrence and thought nothing m ore of it. Besides, she had seen it all her life so why would she think it was wrong? She took out one of the apples the merchant had given her and started eating it. AS Bad Rock mentioned their finances, Pela furrowed her brows.

”We’re not hunters by trade, Father. Besides, the wild game here would be scarce with all the other people hunting it as well.”

She chewed on the bite of apple thoughtfully. She knew her Father was restless and kept himself confined to the cave out of safety for them than anything but he was used to being out and roaming free. It pained her to see him….caged, so to speak.

”What if I took on a job, Father? Like you said, I am capable of taking care of myself and you have taught me how to fight. Why not let me seek out employment on my own for both of us? That way we will not have to worry about hunting.”

She saw the look that crossed Bad Rocks face and furrowed her brows again.

”I know what you are going to say and please do not say it. I am a grown woman, Father. I cannot rely on you for the rest of my life. It is time I learned to earn my own living and take care of you the way you have taken care of me over the years. I do not like to see you like this. I could get enough money where we could go live someplace we would never be found. You would live open and free as you are meant to live.”

She slumped down onto her bed roll as she took another bite of her apple. Her light mood was slowly disappearing and a most foul mood was taking its place.

He looked at her as she spoke and he didn’t react until she sat on her bed roll. “Where would we go my Pela? You only know how to do one thing, both of us only know how to do one thing.”

She looked at him and he nodded softly, “However, if it is your wish to do something else with your life you know I would never stop you. Being sentimental has never been one of my strong points.” He laughed, though he loved her, he was after all a Netherman, and the most affectionate he ever tended to get was the hugs and a brush of the cheek from his finger. “Though I hope whatever it is you do I can still be around, I understand if you want to go off and do your own thing.”

He looked across at her. It was still unclear to him why he didn’t just make a meal of her when he found her, but there was something charismatic about her that he found irresistible, and as much as he was capable, he did love her like she was his own child.

He stood and walked over to her, kneeling beside her bed, “We will leave in the morning. Take some of the money and go buy rations. We will head to the coast where there will be more opportunities for you to find something, not to mention the cliffs will provide more opportunity for us to find shelter. The area is more populated as well, so I will be able to move around more freely as the populace will be accustomed to other sorts of creatures.

14: Mixed Minds RayannRed

As Rayann felt the love Kali felt for Trystan, she felt her breath catch in her throat. It was exactly the same way she felt about Myth and to know her daughter had discovered a love such as that both delighted and saddened Rayann. As Rayann felt the heat slowly leave her face, she cleared her throat softly.

”Love is a strange emotion, Kali. The more we try to deny it, the more it insists we surrender to it. It was no different for your father and I. Even when I found out he was sent to take me to the Dark Queen herself I couldn’t stop loving him. It’s something we can’t control. Just remember this, my daughter, love is always a risk worth taking.”

She couldn’t help but giggle softly as Kali explained what happened to her and when regarding these episodes. When smiled at her daughter and nodded in agreement with Ceri.

”Ceri’s right, my dear. Don’t go trying to kiss Trystan. Ceri and I will sequester ourselves to work on the wardings you will need and then we’ll put them to the test. Now….why don’t you get yourself a bath, relax a little and when Ceri and I are ready, we’ll send for you. Deal?”

Rayann walked over to where Kali was and leaned in kissing her forehead then leaned back and smiled lovingly at her.

”We will get through this Kali. You’re not alone in this anymore.”

She looked over at Ceri and nodded.

”Come on, my friend. Let’s see what we can do to help Kali. Knowing you, I’m sure it will be something monumental.”

Rayann hooked elbows with Ceri and stepped outside Kali’s door and closed it gently then looked at her guards.

”Your duties are to protect my daughter, correct?”

The guards looked at each other then at Rayann and nodded.

“Yes, ma’am.”

”Good. If Sir Trystan shows up, do not permit him entrance to this room. Tell him it’s for his own safety and if he should have issue with this order, tell him to take it up with her father, Prince Myth’Alas. He will be glad to explain it all to him.”

The guards gave a confused look at each other then looked back at her.

“Ma’am? You want us to restrict our commander form entering the room? But ma’am….he’s our comma…”

”And your duties are to protect my daughter. You do not wish to be punished for dereliction of duty, do you?”

The guards snapped to attention and shook their heads.

“No ma’am. We’ll make sure Sire Trystan doesn’t gain access to your daughter’s room.”

Rayann smiled brightly.

”Thank you gentlemen.”

Seeing the look on Ceri’s face, Rayann smiled and spoke to her mind as she hooked Ceri’s elbow and walked off.

~Until we can get the wardings in place, Trystan is as much in danger as Kali is. We need to keep them separated until we’re certain they will both be safe. And Myth will keep the good Sir occupied for the rest of the day. Trust me.~

As they walked on, Rayann smiled to herself as she sent Myth a missive that explained everything, making sure he kept Trystan occupied until they could protect the Knight and Kali.

14: Mixed Minds Ceribanner

Ceridwyn smiled as Rayann spoke to Kali. Before they left Ceridwyn walked over and embraced Kali, hugging her tightly and stepping back, “Your mother is right, we are sisters in the Art, despite the color of our robes.”

She took Rayann’s escort and left the room. Listening to the exchange between Rayann and the guards it was all she could do to stifle her laughter. One the missive hit her mind she responded, her laughter was laced in her words, ~ “Maybe at the heart of you is a black robed life my friend, because that was just mean!” ~

She turned and looked at Rayann, speaking again, ~ “You practically told those poor two men that if they didn’t do as you told them they would end up in the gladiator ring with Myth’Alas. Though, I agree whole heartedly, Trystan is in as much danger, if not more, than Kali. Because this magic is so dark my thought is that it can be countered with absolute light. We will cast a spell of protection on her mind of godly brilliance, in my prayers Solinari has given me clairvoyance into the depth of darkness this magic come from, as well as a possible counter, unfortunately he doesn’t even know for sure.” ~

Rayann gave her a concerned look and Ceridwyn patted her hand reassuringly, ~ “Solinari is a god of light, he would not give a suggestion unless he was fairly certain it will work. Fret not, I believe things will be fine.” ~

They made their way to Ceridwyn’s room and she retrieved her pack of reagents. After a brief discussion with Lady Rose (but with limited information as to the full nature of what they were doing) they were granted permission to use the top room of one of the battlements. After clearing out the archers and all the metals Ceridwyn and Rayann followed the instructions that Ceridwyn had been penning the last couple days. They arranged the room with a single table in the center, surrounded it with multiple layers of reagents and sweet smelling herbs. Across the table Ceridwyn spread a layer of rose pedals and sage mixed with dried bee wings and Vallenwood bark.

Looking around the room she looked at Rayann and could see that they were in silent agreement the room was prepared. Ceridwyn spoke, “Let me see your spellbook.” Rayann handed it to her, but it was as if she was handing over her child, even though they trusted one another explicitly the handing over of a spell book was no small matter. Ceridwyn sprinkled reagents over her own spellbook, open to the page that contained the complex spell. As she hissed the words of magic the words duplicated themselves and lifted from the page. She moved her hand to Rayann’s book which lay open on the table and made a motion as if to drop something, the words landed on an empty page in Rayann’s book and then swirled like a pebble had hit water. She smiled and grabbed the book, handing it back to Rayann, “We have 6 hours to memorize it, I pray that’s enough time.”

14: Mixed Minds Mage2

Pela looked up at Bad Rock and her smile said it all. She jumped up and hugged him as best she could then pulled back still smiling.

”Oh Father! That would be wonderful. I will make you very proud of me. You will see. I will use the skills you have taught me and become as good as you. If not better.”

She gave him a sideways glance with a coy look before giggling softly. Sitting back on her bedroll, she munched happily on her apple until she finished it completely. Bad Rock seemed to enjoy his meal as well and sat, patting his belly when she stood up and walked over to get some more of the money that was rapidly disappearing. Counting the coins, she made sure she had what was going to be needed. Pela was no stranger to gathering rations for trips. Bad Rock taught her that at an early age. Slipping the coins into her belt purse again, she walked over and kissed his rough cheek again.

”I will be back as soon as I have required the things we need, Father. And do not worry. I will be just fine.”

With almost a skip in her step, she slipped from the cave that was their hiding place home and into the crisp air again. She paused and took a deep breath then let it out slowly. Her ice blue eyes seemed to shimmer in the light of the winter day. Once more she made her way towards the hamlet. She passed by the men she had killed earlier and she paused to admire her own handiwork.

”Father always said exercise was good. How right he is.”

There was no remorse, no regret, no sadness, and no second thought of what she’d done. Killing to her was no different than watching Bad Rock eat his meals. It was simply a fact of her life. And killing is how she helped make a living. Without another glance, she stepped over one of the bodies and headed for the hamlet to get what they were going to need for their trip and return to the cave before darkness arrived.

14: Mixed Minds RayannRed

Rayann giggled softly as she heard Ceri’s missive.

~I know. Perhaps the bond between myself and Rorie was still enough that I learned some tricks of the trade from him.~

The women looked at each other and shook their heads.

~Nah…~

Once they cleared the top room of the battlement, to the archers dismay, Rayann watched Ceri prepare the room. When she asked for Rayann’s spell book, Rayann blinked and pulled her book out of her robes and held it before her, looking longingly at it. Her fingers lovingly caressed it and she hesitated handing it over to Ceri.

As Ceri took possession of the book, Rayann felt a moment of panic before it settled. As Ceri spun her spell, Rayann watched fascinated as the spell was added to her book. When Ceri handed the book back to her, Rayann could feel it vibrating and she knew what ever this spell was it held a great amount of power to it. She just hoped it was enough. Looking up at Ceri, she nodded softly then sighed.

”Well then, I suggest we get to studying. Six hours is not a long time.”

Myth and Kali would feel that Rayann now completely blocked them from being able to reach her in any way. She needed complete and total concentration to learn this new spell and in order to do that, she had to separate herself from her family. They would still be able to feel her life force insuring she was alright but that was all. In the meantime, she opened her spell book and took a seat near one of the windows of the room and began to read the spell.

Ceri was right…..six hours was going to be cutting it close.

14: Mixed Minds Mythban2

Myth could only stare at the door to his daughter's quarters and shake his head. The realm of magic was a place not completely lost on him but there was little he could do in a situation like this. It frustrated him slightly but it would pass in time. He looked at the blade still in his hand his lips began curling into a smile. Perhaps a lesson would help improve his mood slightly. With a chuckle Myth slipped the blade into a place at his side. There was something else he had to do before that however. He was certain by now that Trystan would be talking to Lady Rose so he knew that she would have a moment to talk after the fact. Myth stopped a young lady as she was passing. "Excuse me miss... would you by chance know the way to the office of the lady of the keep?"

Larissa was surprised to be stopped by the elven prince as she was making her run. She suppressed the urge to chuckle in response to his question. If anyone knew there way to Rose it was definitely her but she did not expect the prince to know that. "I would be honored to take you to her ladyship m'lord." she bowed slightly and turned looking at the prince and began to lead him to her lady's office.

The trip would be a short one but before they arrived Myth received the missive from his wife. Overall he was a bit bothered by the situation but he was ultimately amused with the task that was given to him. When they approached the door Larrisa held up a hand and smiled excusing herself from his presence to let the commander know that he was outside.

Rose was finishing up with some of the remaining business from her absence when Trystan arrived. Without question she sat and listened to his report on the matter. She scratched her chin lightly and nodded when he finished. She sat there in silence contemplating many things. There was still a great deal to discuss with him but she knew right now was not the time to bring any of it up. His interactions with the lady mage unsettled her a bit considering where she knew his heart had been not even two weeks ago. She let out a sigh finally and laced her fingers together before her resting her chin upon them. "Thank you for your report Sir Trystan. I have had little time today to look into the events of the evening past. That is one burden for the day off my shoulders, but it has brought entirely new one into focus."

She was about to continue when Larissa entered the room "Lady Rose... the elven prince has come to see you."

Rose quirked an eyebrow looking at Trystan "Seems I have quite a few people that wish to see me today... show him in Larissa" The lady bowed disappearing returning moments later with Myth in tow. Rose stood and bowed in greeting "A pleasure as always Myth'alas."
