Zack looked down to Kaelan as she moved another strand of stray hairs he looked down to her his hand moving from the scar he mouthed the word ‘thanks’ to her. Kaelan asked whether he would be alright he took a moment and a comical pause as he thought about it... “Not to cause distress but...I think I might just...would I really be...fine, just don’t worry everything will work out.” Grinning slightly as they both continued to walk his iron grey eyes slicing into hers, narrowing slightly as if he could tell the turmoil within her from just a deep look into her eyes. “Let’s get to this town I would really like a glass of...scratch that, another bottle of wine.”

PostSubject: Re: Life After the Cataclysm - Chapter 3   Sun Mar 07, 2010 1:09 am

Yuéqiu acknowledged Zack's elaboration with a subtle nod. In the world of Midean 'fire arms' were indeed extremely rare. Magicked items passed down from generation to generation, the knowledge of their craft all but forgotten.

As the steam train rumbled by, Yuéqiu was not at all surprised when the ancient half-demon, Zack recollected when they were the height of technology in the Prime world of Earth. The old mystic understood that it was his chosen realm, but then all beings of demonic blood knew of and were familiar with Midean. Kaelen was fortunate to have him as guide in this new world, and for that matter so was he, Yuéqiu considered. His own world was also changing. Despite the fact that for the most part the nature of Midean would dominate, it would also be altered by the laws of the Prime world. Modern machinery would still function and Yuéqiu while familiar with such things as 'cybernetics' and 'genetics' knew little of them, other than they were tools of science.

Yuéqiu walked silently along with his two companions as they sought company in a chaste embrace. He cared little for romance, he had no use for it, but he was not a bitter man. Fate had taken away what happiness he had known and were he able to turn back the clock, changing everyone of his steps would not make a difference. He accepted his loss and one day he would have his vengeance and restore the balance. Thus he did not disparage at the sight of the two, but rather pondered why the ancient demon played at being a man after all his long years.

Set before a stark rocky landscape the old Midean town had stood for some time. An ancient weathered and worn wall surrounded the town, a solid perimeter except in where the train tracks and main road entered. Upon it, gaslights burned bright, and as they drew closer could also spy electric spot lights, darkened and only used in times of conflict.

Above the grand archway of the main gate was a great clock made of brass and iron, and unlike the time pieces of Earth Prime, Midean's days and nights were divided into thirteen hour segments. The clock had yet to strike four 'o'clock in the afternoon prior to the fast descent of night but the iron barred gates were sealed, obviously due to the fear of beasts that would roam the night during the time of transformation. At the center of each gate the wrought iron bars were twisted in magical symbols of warding, designed to fend off demons and other supernatural beings. These, however, did not have the power to ward off a half-demon, such as Zack, basically due to the fact as well that such perfect combinations were extremely rare. Still, they were all locked out of the town and the entrance through which the train had entered had been locked tight by the time the reached the gateway.

The wall itself was only ten feet high, and the loose fitting, uneven stonework made for an easy climb. It was a bastion that aided defense and was not completely relied on to keep out monsters and the like with out the assistance of guards. Scaling it, would only be seen as trespassing and so it was best for the three to toll the bell and announce their presence, which Yuéqiu immediately did.

A few moments after the chime a guard appeared staring nervously at the three travelers. "Who goes there? Do you not know it is not safe to travel this night or for the next two. State your business and be quick about it."Requested the sentry in an older more archaic form of English.

Zack yawned a little as they looked upon the ‘great wall’ Zack was inspecting it with some interest inspecting the workmanship especially the clock with its thirteen hour face causing Zack to raise his eyebrow slightly. “They even have brought their own sense of time into our world it really will change.” Zack walked up to the gates as Yuéqiu rang the bell his finger poking at the symbol feeling no heat rise from the symbol. “Bit lame for protection they would have more luck with a clove of garlic.” Zack removed his hand walking back to Yuéqiu as he heard the whispers of the guards discussing what to do Zack stood next to Yuéqiu. “We could call ourselves bounty hunters they aren’t usually rejected from towns and it would explain why we are armed to the teeth and travelling.” Whispering to the mystic just before the guard poked his head over the bastion.

Zack looked up to the guard taking a note on the archaic English. “Almost Victorian I just hope they aren’t wearing those old cravats never did agree with them, ball dresses were nice.” Seeming to think of a moment from another time but Kade pushed the memory away plonking himself down in front of it. “Stop day dreaming you moron just because you’re in the day an age before everything as I like to say went so well, for you on the other hand it was TERRIBLE!” Zack smiled to the demon as it showed its distaste in the sudden revival of a realm he had fought so hard to survive in and now it was back again.

“Don’t worry this will be easy as none of our old friends are alive still none could have lived this long.” The demon gave a smirk standing up slowly as he formed into a figure Zack frowned as he stood before an old friend of his the long strands of blond hair seeming to drift on the wind. “This man Zack survived his will to live was so great it was enough for him to live on in the Midean realm, even now he is still…” Zack walked away from the demon a slight amount of disbelief in his mind but he surfaced to find that his minute conversation had practically lasted the time of that of a single blink of an eye.

Yuéqiu nodded to Zack taking his advice under consideration but simply stated to the sentry, "We seek sanctuary.", then handed him through the bars a small bronze token. The sentry scrutinized the coin, holding it up to the lantern light as he turned it back and forth then satisfied with the authenticity of the 'traveler's token' tucked it into his pocket and opened a smaller gate within one of the larger ones.

"Sorry." Said the guard, barring the way to Zack and Kaelen with his pike after Yuéqiu passed through.

"They are with me." Yuéqiu expressed politely.

"Ah, yeah. Sorry 'bout that but these be dark times and I cannot let any pass without a token." Explained the sentry, "We're under strict orders."

Yuéqiu frowned. "But they are strangers to this land." he pointed out, "Please be reasonable."

"You're lucky I'm lettin' you in, what with the look of ya and the strange way you talk." Argued the sentry.

Yuéqiu actually rolled his eyes at the guard. It was the most animated he had been since Zack and Kaelen had known him. He reached into his tunic and produced a few coins which he dropped into the guards out stretched hand. "I believe these may be the tokens you are looking for." exasperatedly said the mystic.

The guard inspected the silver pieces with a greedy glint in his eye. "Oh yes, sir. I do believe these will serve." he said, then stepped aside and bid Zack and Kaelen enter, "Welcome to Obsidon."

Obsidon was a classic looking medieval town. Primarily constructed of stone and mortar but the architectural styles greatly varied as if the construction had been influenced by several different cultures. Most of the streets were cobblestone and bright gaslight lamp posts provided illumination through the dark narrow passages of the sleepy settlement. Zack's Victorian assessment had indeed been fairly accurate although the dress styles of those people they passed by varied as greatly as the buildings around them. Some articles of clothing were more archaic than others and in some cases people wore a combination of garments from different eras. All of course commonly carried some type of medieval weaponry.

The main road they followed which was called 'Gate Street' ended at a large inn where it divided in two. An elaborate sign with a red dragon entwined around a black one hung above the heavy oaken door of a three story building that was reminiscent of a more northerly culture. It was as good a place as any for the traveler's to stop at and upon their entry a burly man making his way past the doorway to the bar greeted them, "Welcome to the 'Red & Black'." he said with a smile. A few other patrons looked their way with simple curious glances then carried on with their conversations. The general underlying tone of the establishment was tense due to the 'time of change', but people were trying to weather it without too much panic.

On a center wall opposite the entry way was a roaring fire, flickering beneath a rather grand stone mantle. To its right, a passage continued on to the other side of the tavern and to its left was a stairway leading up to the rooms.

"What'll you 'ave?" Boomed the barkeep making a few people sitting near him jump.

Kaelan had never seen anything like this before in her whole life. She took in everything from the way the buildings were made and what they were made of to the streets to the lights. Her blue eyes stared in wonder and she blushed when she noticed Zack watching her with a smile on his face.

When they entered the tavern, she all but jumped out of her skin when the barkeep bellowed at them, wanting to know what they wanted to drink. She had no idea for the only things she'd ever drank were old cans of something called soda, a little wine and water. She looked to Zack for advice then to the monk. Shrugging her shoulders, she ordered a glass of wine.

The barkeep banged the thick glass down in front of her before sloshing the wine into it from a dust covered bottle. He looked at her with a glint in his eye then looked at the two men she was with before giving her a lewd smile. She had no idea what it was all about, so she simply smiled back at him and sipped her wine. She noticed Zack glaring at the beefy man and wondered why.

She finished her drink and yawned, suddenly feeling exhausted. She could still feel the various animal dnas hashing around inside of her and thankfully, she was becoming adept at controlling things....for now.

She looked around her, once again taking everything in. She saw people sitting at tables, drinking, talking, laughing, and at one table they were playing a game with cards. She sat there, next to Zack, watching everyone with wide, innocent eyes.

Zack glared at the barkeep for duration then finally ordered his drink... “Bottle of finest red wine.” The bar keep lifted an eyebrow such tastes were odd in this time but it happened he brought forward a different bottle more dusty than the old one the barkeep thinking over the price having not fully decided Zack pulled almost eighty silvers out of his large pouch he looked over his shoulder to Kaelan... “Three rooms if you would be kind enough and the drinks that will probably be ordered by us.” He slapped the eighty silvers into the barkeeps hand it was worth at least a quarters worth of the tavern but he simply pocketed the coin with a greedy glint in his eyes. “Keys?” The barkeeper reached into a separate pouch situated on his belly like a belt he removed three keys handing them to Zack who threw one over to the mystic who caught it easily while he sat down next to Kaelan with his bottle.

Zack had a quick glance round then held the key in front of Kaelan’s face. “Your own room if you want paid for.” His eyes didn’t look at the key but continued to watch the game with interest the cards easy for him to see he lowered the key letting the chain attached to the room number printed clink onto the desk his eyes narrowing slightly. “One of the players is cheating.” He deduced quickly taking his eyes off the game they fell upon Kaelan who was sipping at her wine with innocence drawn almost with a pencil across her face.

PostSubject: Re: Life After the Cataclysm - Chapter 3   Fri Mar 12, 2010 1:44 am

If Yuéqiu had taken note of the bartender's behaviour he did not show it. He bowed his head politely to Zack in thanks for his generosity then stood before the portly bar keep until he had his full attention. "A cup and pot of hot water please.", he requested then moved to a vacant table near the warm fire. With a slight glance to Zack he beckoned he and Kaelen join him where he awaited his beverage to brought to him.

The bar keep grumbled under his breath while he fetched the mystics boiling water from the kitchen and set the tea pot and cup on a tray along with the other other bottles of wine that had been ordered. It was normally not his custom to wait upon the patrons so, which Yuéqiu was very aware of, but he figured the man could stand to learn some humility and earn the generous sum of money he had received from Zack.

"Anything else?" Growled the bar-keep as he set down the tray and placed the items in the middle of the table with a heavy hand.

Yuéqiu smiled slightly. "Of course. We are hungry. Fetch us food." he replied curtly, his eyes never once rising from the table.

It dawned on the large man then that he was being put in his place and all for such a thing as paying attention to a woman! He shook his head angrily then turned to do their bidding, but not before something caught his eye, or rather the eye caught him. As his gaze passed across Kaelen, the bar-keep saw something flicker in her eyes. Something unnatural. Something bestial.

"God's blood!" he exclaimed, "You are a creature of the other world!"

The bar-keep's claim attracted the attention of many of the patrons who looked over with disdain. While the merging of the two realms were inevitable, they were reluctant to embrace the changes being thrust upon them and Kaelen's presence only served to remind them of their fears and powerlessness in a changing world.

"You're not welcome here!" Shouted a voice from a dark corner of the tavern, seconded from a another man sitting at the bar. The mood was fast turning ugly and one impetuous man drew his sword out of hatred, but as soon as it was unsheathed a hand quickly pushed it back in place. The man turned about angrily but when he saw who had interfered his expression turned submissive and he turned silent.

A garishly dressed man had skipped down the steps quite spryly for his years and after dealing with the foolish act of one the patrons looked about at all the angry faces and shouted, "How quickly most of ye forget that many o' your ancestors were once of the other world!"

For a moment then the man was silent and as he glared around the room his intense stare forcing all who met his eyes to turn away, then when he was satisfied that he had their undivided attention he swaggered toward the table of strangers. "I'll not allow such petty squabbles to erupt in my inn, or in my town!" he commanded then he gestured toward Kaelen, "Aye, 'tis true she is not of our world but believe me she will not be the last to enter Obsidon, nor is she the first. Now, all of you go on about ye business and leave these fine people be."

Just like that peace had been restored. The garish man then stood before the three and graciously bowed. He then reached out his hand for Kaelen's and lightly kissed the back of it in a gentlemanly fashion. Standing straight he introduced himself as , "Ethrened.", the owner of the Red and Black and also the Reeve of Obsidon. "Welcome to our fair town during this most trying time. I trust you will respect our ways here and it seems at least one among you knows them." he said looking at Yuéqiu. "I shall leave you now to your meal. Farewell." Ethrened then tipped his hat and made his way out of the inn.

When the barkeep yells at her and causes her to feel threatened her eyes instantly change to that of a wolf's, her canines elongating as a growl comes from deep within her throat. When she hears a sword being unsheathed, her head turns to the sound as she crouches down as if ready to leap.

When the garishly dressed man comes down and quickly takes charge of the situation, calming the people she fights to rein in the wolf. She does so just as the man approaches them.

When the man takes her hand and kisses the back of it, she blushes but is grateful that he diffused the situation. She looks over at Zack and then to the monk as she sits back down to wait for her meal. Looking over the room, she sees that most eyes are trained on her and most of them are not friendly, but at least they are not threatening them anymore.

PostSubject: Re: Life After the Cataclysm - Chapter 3   Sat Mar 13, 2010 10:20 am

Zack tapped Kaelan on the arm. “Let’s go sit with Yuéqiu.” The two moved from their small table watching the card games to the fire side table with the mystic Zack dropping into his chair seeming to flop into the chair he watched the bar keep grumbling as he fetched the water for the mystic. “Don’t take advantage of him now we don’t want…” He didn’t finish his sentence as the man came back with a selection of wine bottles which had escaped Zack’s glance he gave a smile as he read the labels none familiar to what he used to drink but he thought it over that such company would not have survived this long.

Zack’s hand stretched out curling around the neck of one the barkeep thinking that Zack was being greedy grabbing another bottle but noticed he had almost but drained his first bottle none recalling when he had drank. Zack lifted his eyes to the barkeep when he asked for anything else Zack had been about to dismiss him with thanks but Yuéqiu spoke before he could Zack straightened up in his seat with the new bottle taking a huge swig from the bottle he couldn’t help but smile at Yuéqiu antics for the notice of Kaelan. The barkeep turned but he noticed something Zack had been worried would happen Zack kept his cool showing no change on his face but the grip on the bottle changed from encompassing to barely touching his hand relaxing slightly. Zack looked up from his drink lifting his head he took a casual glance to the door his ‘exit’. Zack lowered his arm onto Kaelan’s he looked around at the people he watched the man pull his sword three inches from his sheath Zack had his free hand off his bottle sliding into his coat about to withdraw when a hand pushed the sword back into his sheath a hand tapped Zack lightly on the arm, Yuéqiu.
Zack let his hand slowly go back to his bottle of wine he moved his eyes from the crowd back to the wine bottle seeming to consider drinking it as he swirled it round in his hand. Zack didn’t lift an eyelid as the garishly dressed man walked to their table he was only thankful he hadn’t needed to kill anyone to escape. His eyes lifted as the man left following him as he walked out. “That man probably knows how to fight with the ease he had forced that man’s hand back into the sheath.” Zack considering the possibility that a warrior was in charge of the town.

Zack watched the barkeep make his way with what could only be considered their meal it smelt good he had to admit… “Roast meat…..potatoes and some gravy, been a long time since I have eaten some proper cooked meat…” He stopped then remembering a time which had seemed so long ago that small farm house…it was hazy….a blue dress and chicken…Sin… Zack took another deliberate slow swig finding he was already draining the contents of this second bottle in the mere amount it had taken Kaelan to drink only three quarters of her glass. The barkeep lowered the tray with the plates of food glancing to Yuéqiu almost expecting another order but Zack chipped in. “Another bottle of wine…any brand I don’t mind.” Zack placing the almost empty bottles next to each other both with a small amount left in the bottom a pool of dark red.

PostSubject: Re: Life After the Cataclysm - Chapter 3   Mon Mar 15, 2010 2:09 am

Yuéqiu's normally expressionless face betrayed a slight grin as his dark eyes met Zack's. When he had first met the half-demon, he had feared he would have to destroy him like all others but now he felt very fortunate to have him as a companion. He had a familiarity to him that of all things put Yuéqiu at ease and it had been very long time since he had another sword to stand by his. As for the woman, he had yet to really get to know her, but felt that in time she too would become a trustworthy ally, but Yuéqiu was no fool. He did not give his trust so readily and he had but known his new companions for a brief time. It was only because of Zack's longevity and honorable nature that the mystic felt confident of his loyalty.

When the teapot of hot water had been placed before him, the mystic had procured from his satchel a small sack from which he procured a handful of herbs. Opening the pot, he sprinkled the dried concoction into the steaming water, covered it and allowed it to steep. Immediately a most delightful fragrance rose into the air. A mixture of intoxicating scents, which the ancient half-demon would readily recognize to be an old medicinal blend dating back to the Ming dynasty of China.

Yuéqiu poured himself a cup of tea and taking a sip, savoured the sweet flavour. He looked about the tavern with softened eyes and nodded. "It is good to be home." he said in his usual heavy Mandarin accented voice, then turning to Kaelen offered the woman some rare sympathy, "Do not despair, Kaelen. Hold on to who you are and I promise you will find this world, the world of Midean much more appealing than the old one."

When the food arrived, Yuéqiu did not share Zack's enthusiasm at the sight of the fare, but was most pleased when the bar-keep placed a platter of vegetables and roasted chicken prepared in a similar fashion to what he was accustomed to.

"Compliments of Reeve Ethrened." Mentioned the bar-keeper to Yuéqiu which explained how the cook of the establishment knew to prepare such a dish.

The mystic bowed gratefully and took from his satchel a pair of chopsticks which he used to fill his bowl with some steamed rice then began to pick away at the platter. "Please." he said to his companions as he gestured to the specially prepared meal from his area of the world, "It would seem that this Ethrened just does not carry a sword of the Nihonjin but knows of their culture as well. It is not the food of my home but more so than the common fare of this town."

While they ate, something alerted Yuéqiu and consequently the half-demon felt it as well. A distant scream echoed in Kaelen's ears then it became audible to those within the tavern. A piercing wale echoed through the timbers of the building and all grew silent.

"Tis one of the wolf-wraith's." whispered one of the patrons at a nearby table, "They stir this night."

After a few minutes of silence the people began to settle and conversations slowly resumed. The demonic wolf-wraith's could not bypass the charmed walls of Obsidon and so the people believed they were safe, but little did they realize that during the three days of the blood moon that demon's would grow in strength.

Kaelan tensed when she heard the wolf-wraith's scream as her own wolf dna began to shift around inside of her, making her very uncomfortable. Her eyes began to flicker back and forth from their bright blue to the golden amber of a wolf. She quickly lowered her eyes so that she wouldn't draw anymore undo attention to them, but it was difficult to sit still. Never had she'd felt like this before and it made her very uneasy as well as scared. She felt as if something were trying to claw it's way out of her. It was one thing to use the strengths of the dna the psycho doctor had given her, but this was something totally different and she knew it.

She glanced at Zack and saw that he was on his second or was it his third bottle of wine. She figured that before long, he wouldn't be much help to her or the monk so she resolved herself to the fact that she very well may be on her own with this for she knew that the monk didn't trust her.

She struggled to control the wolf inside of her and after a short while, was able to sit a little more comfortably. She wondered what was going to happen with the other strains of dna inside of her before the third day had passed and why was this happening. She felt as if she would be able to shift into the wolf or one of the others and never...never had she'd been able to do that and she wasn't sure she wanted to. She was only supposed to be able to use the strengths of the animals within he.....not change shape. She cast a glance at the monk and saw him watching her. She quickly cast her eyes back down, just in case they began to change again.

Zack looked over his shoulder. “Why do the pups have so much energy?” Zack talking more to himself than anyone else he swung back round locking his feet on the tables feet he began to lean back on his chair with a warm smile he picked up the bottle swirling it round again before taking a marginally smaller gulp than the other times he slowly peeled his hand from the bottle laying it back on the table he ate quickly with the plate in balance on his lap finishing up he wiped his hands on a serviette standing up finished the third bottle ordering a forth with his hand in the air. Zack gave a nod to the two picking up the empty bottles. “I’m going to go in early for some sleep just for the extra energy been a long day.” He walked towards the bar slightly unsteady on his feet but avoided knocking any patrons.

Reaching the bar he asked for the forth bottle thanking the bar man placing the empty bottles he gave a small smile picking up the bottle found it corked the bar man was about to ask for it back but Zack removed a knife from his harness in his coat stabbing it into the bottle with a practiced hand popping it out he held the tip with the cork impaled to the barman. “Don’t worry about it.” After removing the cork the barman could only watch as Zack made his way towards the stairs weaving and dodging lively movement by the patrons to get to his room.

Kaelan watched Zack stumble along through the patrons and up the stairs after acquiring another bottle of wine. Her gaze was on Zack and Zack alone as he walked up the stairs and disappeared into his room. Sighing, she turned back to the table and finished her own drink.

"I think Zack has the right idea, Yueqiu. A bed is a good idea. I will see you in the morning, or what morning there will be in this darkness."

As Kaelan headed for her own room across the hall from Zack's, she passed the table of the big man who had noticed her eyes changing and almost led an attack against them. As she walked by him, she heard the word 'freak' among others muttered from him and his friends. She sighed again, ignoring them as she walked up the stairs.

She paused at Zack's door, wanting to knock and even raised her hand to do so, only to lower it. She laid her hand on the outside of the door before walking on to her room across the hall. Entering, she saw that it was sparsely furnished, but clean. That was all that mattered to her as she rummaged around in her small pack and brushed out her hair. She knew that such things were silly, but she'd always enjoyed running a brush through her long hair...as if it calmed her somehow, as it did now. Once she was done, she replaced the small brush, set her small pack on the chair next to the bed, pulled back the covers and laid down.

It wasn't long before she was asleep and unfortunately, dreaming. ~She saw herself in the room she'd been in as a little girl, only this time she was grown. A door opened and Dravesh came strolling in, a maniacal grin on his face. He said nothing as he leapt at her, knocking her to the floor, beating her with his fists. She felt the animals moving around inside of her, struggling for dominancy until finally the tiger won. Her eyes changed to the golden/green of a Bengal tiger, her canines elongating iniside of her mouth as her strength grew. Dravesh smiled at her, seemingly glad that she finally would be able to fight him when the scene changed and she was standing outside the tavern she was sleeping in. She looked around for Zack and Yueqiu, but saw no one. She was alone.~

Kaelan woke, feeling very desolate when the wolf-wraith howled again, the sound calling to her own wolf dna. She placed her hands over her ears, trying to muffle the howling with no luck. She actually felt her eyes change and her teeth becoming long and pointed. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she struggled for control. It was as if the dnas inside of her were actually alive. She began to thrash about on the narrow bed, fighting to keep control. She knew that if she lost control, Zack would be forced to kill her and if not him then the monk would. Clenching her teeth together to keep her own howls locked inside of her, she whimpered.

After what seemed like forever, the wraith finally ceased and her wolf dna calmed. Kaelan was drenched in sweat, her whole body aching from the battle. Something told her that this was only going to get worse over the next few days. She did not sleep, instead she dozed afraid to slip into a restful sleep, afraid that if she did she wouldn't have any control if the wraith began again. A part of her wanted to go to Zack and by being with him, she would feel safe. But another part of her was unsure...afraid that Zack would see what she was growing through as a weakness and feel forced to kill her.

PostSubject: Re: Life After the Cataclysm - Chapter 3   Tue Mar 23, 2010 7:28 pm

He had easily slotted the key into the lock with little effort he felt tipsy his legs weak in straightening but he wasn’t completely useless he turned the key finding it jammed he sighed...What a joke he had turned it the wrong way maybe he was simply in denial of the wine he had drunk. Zack turned the key in the lock it clicked open he left it open for a while staring into the cleanly under furnished room noticing that almost every single bit of furniture was bolted to the floor except the bed and the chair at the desk. “Hmmm I guess I won’t bother barricading myself in.” He removed the key from the lock throwing it at the bed the door swung shut as he walked into the room.

Zack went to the desk emptying his major belongings the picture, cigarettes, lighter, metal flask and placed down a delicate small ring with two tigers pouncing at one another being the feature of the ring. Zack unsheathed the sword sticking it into one of the floor boards before the bed he peeled the coat off laying it over the back of his chair. He sat down his back against the sword facing the door. He sat trying to sleep watching the door he saw the shadows pass by the door and one paused outside his door. Zack let his hand wrap round one of the daggers its hilt made of fine black leather his hands toyed with the weapon but the person left. He let his hand drop back to the wooden floor next to the bottle of wine.

Zack took a swig of wine from the bottle finding it was as easy as drinking water, numb to the taste he put the bottle down on the floor next to him he let the eyelids drop only to find red... he opened them just as quick as they had dropped closed. He looked to the ring on the desk so far away he knew what the ring looked like perfectly in his mind he had specifically picked it and over his long life he had kept it safe much like the photo which the ring sat on. “Damnation… was my own doing.” Zack took one last drink he would force himself to sleep whatever the cost. ‘One who was afraid of something immaterial would only be a coward in life.’ He forced himself to sleep closing his eyes forcing his breathing to fall even he fell into the pit of his own mind.

Zack opened his eyes in the dream looking around himself he willed a leg to move finding as usual he could walk within his dreams he felt light…Looking down he found he was stripped down to the waist the livid scars across his body great pink rends slashing through his flesh so many… and the tattoo of a pentagram on his chest surrounded with a circle and twelve unusual symbols he shrugged he had been like this for years slowly adding a scar with every war he participated in. He walked forward on sand shifting under foot he changed his stance to find easy balance on the constant moving surface. Zack continued forward the ground began to rise his feet sinking in he reached finally what could only be described the top of the hill looking back he saw that his footsteps marked for miles no wind picking at the sand yet his clothes wavered in the air… “What am I doing here?” Turning back round where a moment ago was sand a great sword protruded from the sand a child of maybe twelve stood in front of the sword… “My meeting with Kade?”

The child walked forward removing the sword from the sand a voice whispering over the wasteland “This is my canines melded into one weapon; it was shattered by you a mere mortal…” Zack looked around shards glittered around him which he had mistaken as sand were shards of metal. “It was a beautiful sword, shame it had to shatter.” The child’s voice no louder than a whisper a chuckle same from behind the child causing him to turn slowly to find the Jackal with only one head a small stump accommodating the space next to it. “If you bleed upon the shattered edge and will the binding of such a great weapon I promise the revenge of your family…we could even save your sister, only if you promise to allow me to take….accommodation.” The child looked back to the blade with no fear he strode up to the blade. “I take this decision with no regret let it be as you say demon.” The demon gave a huge laugh as he stepped forward towards Zack watching the child cut open his hand on the blade letting it run down to the shattered end . “Call me Kade.” Without further ado the demon rammed his claw into the child’s chest the kid did not even scream as the black substance of Kade seemed to collapse into the child in the end all that was left was five bleeding holes above his heart the points of the pentagrams star.

That was when he faded away and finally awakened opening his eyes.

A couple of hours later, Kaelan couldn't lay there, alone, any longer. She was confused and scared about what was going on inside of her. She'd always had some control over her dna, but this.....what was happening to her wasn't normal, on any level.

She swung her legs out of the bed and on silent feet, padded to the door opening it. She looked across the hall to Zack's door and decided to risk it. She needed to feel safe and right now, Zack was her only anchor. She walked across the hall and quietly opened the door.

"Zack...Zack, can I come in? I can't sleep and I would rather not be alone with the wolf-wraith out there."

Her voice was merely a whisper, her plea touching him. So much like Sin she was and yet there were enough differences to not mistake her for her deceased sister.

Zack opened his eyes...

He saw the door open he wanted to reach for a knife but laziness cause him to wait when she heard the quiet voice of Si....Kaelan asking for entry. “Sure you can come in.” He watched her step further in he smiled to her from his sitting down position on the floor. “You can have the bed never found them comfortable.” His hand slowly circled around his heart region the dream having caught him in its thrall of interest.

Kaelan's head cocked to one side, resembling that of a confused animal. She walked over to the bed and sat down on it before Zack could get out of the bed and wrapped her arms around him, laying her head on his chest.

"Please, Zack. Stay....I don't want to be alone. I don't understand what's happening to me. Help me.....I don't want you or the monk to have to kill me......but the wraith's howls call to the dna I carry and it hurts."

Zack was about to lift himself up when he found Kaelan weighing him down he could have easily have left but her words made him stay. He wrapped his own arms around her. “Just don’t worry we are safe.” He kissed just beside her lips he could hear the demon laughing at the back of his head sinister. “You trying to act human again Zackie.” The demon chiding him but as quick as it had come it was gone leaving a sort of empty loneliness Zack brought her closer into his embrace. “Just sleep and think happy thoughts avoid the nightmares.”

Yuéqiu strolled the deserted town streets. No one dared walk the night for fear the creatures they referred to as 'wolf-wraiths' catch wind of them and dare to challenged the protective wards that guarded the walls from such demonic beasts, but the mystic was alone unaffected by the trepidation that gripped the town. One might believe he knew something that most did not, and those believing such a thing would be half correct. Yuéqiu did in fact possess more knowledge of the 'dimensional amalgam' than he let on, but this alone did not put his mind at ease, in fact what he knew had quite the opposite effect. No, his calm demeanor was tempered by the mystical blade that never left his side, a sword that hungered for demonic blood.

Beyond the walls the great wolf-beast prowled the night. A creature that was once a man that like all of his brethren succumbed to a curse that transformed him into a vicious monster lusting for human flesh. He and the other's drew near to the wall, then fearfully withdrew and the wards repelled them, but this night the push was not as strong, nor the pain as great. Something had changed in the world and the giant wolves grew increasingly braver by the hour. It was only a matter of time before one breached the wall and when that happened, Yuéqui would be waiting.

Kaelan snuggled in close to Zack, falling asleep with her head on his chest. As she drifted off, she mumbled something that would probably shock Zack and Kade as well.

"G'night Kade. Thank you for letting Zack make me feel safe."

She dreamed of her time with Nurse Bev in the woods and how Bev taught her what little she knew about her animal side.....the different strains of dna flowing through her body. Then the howling began anew.

Kaelan was wrenched from Zack's embrace, her back bowing as the howls of the beasts became louder, cutting straight through her. She wasn't like the beasts out beyond the protected wall, but she was still cursed so to speak, having been created in a lab. The wolf strain of dna she carried was the same as what Sin's sister had carried, only with different results because of the other strands of dna in her body.

But on this night, the mystical wall having been dropped, caused havoc with her senses......starting with the wolf's dnat. Her eyes turned a bright amber, her canines became long and sharp, claws erupted in spurts of blood from her fingertips. Her eyes were filled with pain and fear as she looked at Zack. Her back bowed again, violently as she fought to control the wolf's dna. It was like since the two worlds had started to merge, her animal dna had changed....had become an entity all their own. She could feel the wolf wanting to break free and it terrified her. This wasn't supposed to be able to happen.

"Zack.....Zack....Kade.....please, help me."

Her eyes turned back to blue, her canines receded as did the claws, only to erupt again when the wraiths howled again. Kaelan whimpered in pain, her eyes turning amber again.

"I can't control it, Zack......help me....I don't want to die."

Zack tackled her to the floor sitting on her back as he removed one of his knives the voice of Kade moving forward. “Are you going to do what I think you are?” Without further ado he began to carve what could only be described as a symbol the line did not continue to blood not falling from it the wound seeming to seal up scarred finishing it off with his knife the symbol went black for a duration. Zack took a deep breath once again placing his hand to the pentagram he began muttering words his hand sinking into his chest after a good duration Kaelan twitching under his weight he removed his hand the fingertips blackened he followed the new made scar.

“Hello little girl.” Kaelan could hear the voice in her head as she had heard it before when the bear form had spoken....Kade. “Why don’t we meet up?” Without further ado she lost conscious to the outside world falling limp. She fell into her mind to find herself standing in at first darkness. “Welcome to the depths of your own mind.” The darkness faded away becoming what she slightly dreaded the white room. “This is the most prominent location almost except for the woods but to dodge complications I picked this.” The room was still empty around her the door sealed shut yet she could still hear his voice.

Kaelan recognized the room immediately. It was the room she'd be taken to before Dravesh would be unleashed on her. She shivered, hearing Kade's voice, but not seeing him. She also looked for Dravesh, half expecting him to appear out of nowhere.

"Kade.....is that you I hear? What has happened? Why am I here and how is it that I can hear you?"

Kaelan was truly confused now and scared. She knew Zack had done something to her back, but she didn't know what.

"Can I see you, Kade? Will you talk to me face to face?"

Kade appeared before her a grinning Zack like the one back from the battlefield his eyes red. “I’m sorry if this form is inappropriate but it’s the most comfortable one in your memories.” Kade walked closer to her a small wave of his hand removing the grin to a normal almost emotionless face. “Like I said welcome to your mind, Zack found it fit to inject a small portion and I mean small portion into your system and hence I was able to function over your brain.” He gave a funny bow straightening slightly he walked to the far door opening it where Dravesh stood. “Sit boy.” To Kaelan’s slight amazement it listened to him sitting on it bottom. “Ahhh the fun of meddling in ones memories is endless.”

Kaelan is amazed that the Dravesh in her mind does exactly as Kade tells it to do. She smiles at Kade and approaches him, keeping one eye on 'Dravesh'.

"Can I touch you? Will you hurt me? Will he hurt me here?"

Without waiting for an answer, Kaelan reached out her hand, touching 'Zack's' face, her fingers gently stroking his cheek.

"You're cold, Kade. Why? Are we truly connected now?"

She looked over again at 'Dravesh', her eyes wary.

"Will he do as I tell him while you're here? Can Zack see and hear inside my mind when you're here as well?"

Kade let her stroke his cheek then that wild grin came on his face and her hand passed through him. “Spooky ain’t it.” He resolidified next to her if that’s the word that could be used for his state. “I’m gonna answer your question much in the same way as Zack, after all I taught the child how to act.” Taking a slightly deep breath to prepare himself for his list of answers. “Ok firstly I’m cold as I’m am immaterial. We are not truly connected in any way except for the fact I’m being a bully and pushing your mental state around if we were connected I would be able to actually take control of you and that would need more of my being.” Kade walked up to Dravesh with a twirl of his hand and the command roll over the monkey did so. “He would if you weren’t afraid of him and you had more will over your own memories compared to Zack you’re like a fledging in mind defence. Zack cannot hear us in your mind unless he keeps his hand on the symbol in your back and I allow it to be connected to his but he wouldn’t need to do that only if he was trying to squeeze information from you, which he isn’t."
